4 Restaurants and Bars to Try This Weekend in the Bay Area: April 12 | Eater SF

"A consistently strong pop-up baker run by former Tartine baker Patty Lu and her mom, this mom-and-daughter duo turns out flaky egg tarts, chocolate brioche buns stuffed with strawberry cream, and other “funky rustic Asian pastry” treats; lines can be long, but it’s a Bay Area–only experience to feast on such well-made pastries. Visit 2701 Eighth Street #114 on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; walk-ins are welcome but pre-ordering a few pastries in advance is wise." - Eater Staff

Google
Best egg tarts in the state! Also have really innovative Asian fusion pastries that are flavorful and well baked, the lamination on the Chinese sausage & chive biscuit is perfection

Susan S.

Google
THESE PASTRIES ARE EVERYTHING 💛 Service was super friendly and kind. ✨ Both the savory and sweet bakes were delicious. The layers on this biscuit are to die for. Fluffy inside crispy edges. This is about to be my new Sunday vice. *Sorry for the mediocre photos (I’ll get better ones next time cuz I will be back 😏)

Matt F.

Google
Great baking quality AND a unique menu that meets its own high expectations. A truly can't miss place! Only open Sundays as of Oct 2924.

Google
Fast line. Easy parking. Super delicious. Kind family who makes you feel like family. 5 stars. No notes.

Noah S.

Google
Delicious and unique, both sweet and savory. I had the pork and tofu meat pie and it might have been the best thing I've eaten for months!

Jade T.

Google
Their pastries are some of the best in the Bay!

Gina Mariko R.

Google
Yum yum! Delicious treats for this Sunday popup. Gotta have the egg tart

Prisna N.

Google
Oh my heart - how did I not know about this bakery before 🌟 it’s probably a good thing that I no longer live a couple of blocks from it otherwise I’d have to size up my entire wardrobe. Tried the cheesecake, salted egg yolk cookie, almond meringue and the amazing egg tarts … everything was delicious with a dash of the kind of pixie dust that comes from love, talent and artisanal care 💖

Yelp
Year of the Snake holds a popup on Sundays in Morrel's Bread's space. Y.O.T.S. is operated by a Tartine alumni, specializes in Asian-inspired Pastries & breads. Selections rotate weekly. Bakes on display in case. Choose n. Go. Drinks made to order. Sips: Hot Vietnamese covfefe (4) in 4 minutes. -freshly dripped Vietnamese covfefe mixed with condensed milk. Authentic! Good to the last drop! Bites: mostly European breads topped/mixed with Asian ingredients. -egg tarts (6) Best of my choices. Crispy, crunchy, flakey shells. Filled with luxurious, egglicious, egg custard... Black Sesame Bestoke (7) -topping a black sesame frangipane (sweet, almond-flavored cream) burst of flavas atop neutral tasting sliced brioche bread. Pickled Mustard green & chili paste faintly baked atop dryish focaccia bread. Greens toasted, bland as was chili paste. A bad bake? 4.5 stars semi-worthy:YMMV quality: overall good Quantity: varies item to item:

Yelp
A Sunday morning must! Highlights: the Chinese sausage and scallion biscuit is like no other. It's not too dry and is great cold or warmed up. I'm also a huge fan of the salted egg yolk cookie. It's not too strong but the specks of yolk are perfect. And it's huge!

Yelp
Such a cute spot tucked away in Oakland. It's a pop-up shop only open weekly with a different menu everytime. They posted about having a black sesame pastry which brought me in last Sunday. Unfortunately they didn't have it when I came so we got the strawberry castella cake, egg tart, and coconut lime bottlecap. The castella cake had no strawberry flavor which was disappointing. The egg tart was my sister's favorite, definitely the flakiest egg tart crust either of us have had. I wasn't a big fan of the filling because I thought it was really wet/runny. The coconut lime bottlecap was my favorite one surprisingly. Not too sweet and crunchy on the outside. Hope to come back and try more.

Yelp
The staff was engaging, everyone was kind and had recommendations on what to try. There was a Japanese cheese roll. I explained that I didn't like cheesecake but was interested and they cut a small piece off from a leftover for me to try. It wasn't to my liking but I deeply appreciated the act. Come early! I was there at noon and people had started to buy up certain baked goods. (I bought the last focaccia.)

Yelp
Best egg tart I've ever had, all of the pastries were amazing, definitely coming back! Tried: Curry foccacia (great served warm, nit Chinese sausage and chive biscuit Lemon lime bottle cap cake Meyer lemon Japanese cheesecake Sesame cookie Veggie cream cheese pretzel cone Egg tarts

Yelp
We are so happy to have tried their pastries and to support this small Asian-owned business/mother daughter duo. This was one of the best egg tarts I've had. And the other pastries had incredibly deep flavor. They were incredible nice and it was not a long wait on a Sunday morning. They even treated us to Zong Zi in celebration of the dragon boat festival. Looking forward to trying their other pastries!

Yelp
All the pastries here are SO good! Decided to drop by on a whim on a Sunday while I was on my way to third culture bakery for a matcha latte. I got 3 pastries total even though everything looked so delicious: - black sesame Bostock: so fluffy and crispy, and the sesame is so creamy and flavorful - blackberry Japanese cheesecake: SOO FLUFFY - my favorite. I definitely will be coming back for another one in the future - egg yolk cookie: very crispy and the egg yolk flavor is light. Definitely coming back here for more sweet treats in the future!

Yelp
Happened upon this place on the happiest of accidents. If you're on the fence I hope I can help sway you to them. Probably the best Egg Tart I've ever had in my life. The focaccia was savory and crunchy With a soft middle. Never thought i needed a pretzel cone full of cream cheese but apparently I do now. Please do yourself a favor and go visit this place.

Yelp
It's a family affair here (almost) every Sunday at Morell's bread. I am so wildly in love with all the baked goods here, there's not a miss on the menu, but here are my favorites: Sesame chip cookie - two types of chocolate chip (dark and dulce), crunchy butter toffee, a little tahini and rolled in roasted sesame. It's a chewy flavor BOMB and maybe my favorite cookie ever. Egg tarts - super creamy and rich filling, buttery flaky crust. The star of the show. Coconut lime cake - Dense, rich, packed with coconut and brown sugar flavor, topped with lime zest in crunchy royal icing. A (not too) sweet, decadent treat. Rice balls / onigiri - Seasonal offering! The slow roasted early girl tomato ones was bomb but I'm really loving the charred scallion and anchovies. Sesame silhouettes - You get there free with a bevvie! Crunchy, buttery and light, with a creamy sesame filling. The variety on the menu is unmatched. Go and pre-order a mixed pack on her website and you'll get some extra treats!

Yelp
Yummy. The egg tarts and the tea eggs are my top top top items. The egg tarts are crispy and creamy and the tea eggs are packed with five spice deliciousness!!! The other items are also inventive and wonderful but since I don't have much of a sweet tooth, I will likely stick to the egg and tea eggs. But if you have a sweet tooth, then this is a great place to try everything.

Yelp
Holy moly!! Best Portuguese egg tart ever! It is life changing. The custard is so silky smooth, and the crust is sooooooo freaking flaky. I also got quite the haul and was able to try a selection of items! Meyer lemon japanese cheesecake was so fluffy! I was amazed at the salted egg yolk cookie- definitely not a common bakery item, and I have no regrets trying it. The korean army stew focaccia was a unique menu item, so I had to try it. It was decent and a nice savory item. Since I ordered a lot and they were about to close, they threw in a little gift (hazelnut baby cake) for me, which was nice of them! The tea eggs were a nice addition because I needed some savory to balance out the sweet.

Yelp
The egg tarts blew my mind and I don't even like egg tarts. I am a pastry person and the tart part of egg tart blew my mind. It was so crispy and perfect and you can taste the layers and the artistry that went into prep. Everything we got here was well-balanced not too sweet. I will absolutely be back for more egg tarts!
google avatar

Mikaela S.

Yelp
Some of my favorite egg tarts in the East Bay!! They also have lots of other delicious Asian inspired pastries that are a good addition to the egg tarts and seem to have new items each time I go! The staff are very nice and if there is ever a line it goes by pretty quickly.

Yelp
Desserts: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Overall: Just a little overpriced for my taste. The extended review... Desserts: Choco-Strawberry Bolo Bun - 3/5 - It definitely caught my eye on paper. Overall it was a little bit bland for my taste. Service: 3/5 - Friendly service. Ambiance: 3/5 - More of a commercial kitchen with pick up and take out service.

Julia L.

Yelp
Wowwwww it's been a while since I took a bite of something and my jaw drops and I just lose my train of thought and keep saying oh my gawd. That happened today after I took my first bite Of YOTS egg tart. It was incredible. Inside was the delicious sweet egg custard and the outside was a buttery flaky crust that takes you to a special place. Sweet staff. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Eunice K.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious egg tart and tea egg. The egg tart had a multilayer flaky crust, custardy center, and touches of brûlée deliciousness. It reminded me of pastel de nata from Portugal. The tea egg was perfect savory snack. The staff and baker are super sweet too. I can't wait to come back and try other items.

Yelp
I couldn't eat anything here, but I saw their sign when I was going to Third Culture to pick up some food. I saw that they had an egg custard tart that people love. My husband loves an egg custard. So I got two and picked up a few other things. He absolutely loved it, he thought that the crust was a bit hard, but I'm sure it would have been perfect for me. But I don't like egg and am allergic to wheat. But the two women in the place were really sweet and kind. They greeted me and were totally accommodating to me. I brought my husband by another day, but they were closed. I hope they are still open because I want my husband to choose what he wants. At this time, supporting a mom and pop or mom and daughter operation feels good. Especially since what they offer is so dang good! I know that they are open here only on Sundays, but I hope that at some point they can have more days or more availability.

Yelp
I can't believe I didn't give them 5 stars the first visit! This is seriously the best bakery. Recently I tried the Japanese cheesecake- an incredibly light, fluffy addictively textured concoction that I keep thinking about... Their egg tart is a revelation--both the pastry and cream are amazing and they come out warm & fresh from the oven. The chocolate chip sesame cookie is the best cc cookie I've ever tasted... are you sensing the theme? I'm lucky I can walk there, but if necessary get in your car and drive there one Sunday soon, you'll thank me for it!

K C.

Yelp
A lot of option and tasty treats. A bit in the pricey side . But couldn't make up my mind. 1 of each. The lady behind the counter was nice and just patient because I could decide. No seating , just take it to go. But I was anxious to take a bite from each pastry. Not really a line. Just fast.

Yelp
Every time I get snacks from here I am delighted by the flavors, the freshness, and the friendliness! The tea egg has such an amazing complexity, the egg tarts are smooth and flakey, the salted egg yolk cookies are to die for. It feels like the best part of a secret market stall, magical and special, open sometimes but a joy when you catch it.

Yelp
Sunday treat to find! This is only a Sunday pop-up and I'm always happy to support a family business. Daughter runs the register and mom was there heating up the angel food cake in the toaster oven. It was very fresh and tasty! Kind service as well. I got half a dozen of custard egg tarts and the angel food cake. I unfortunately had coffee before trying the Vietnamese coffee they had, but I'll come back to try. Pop-ups are not cheap or easy to run so I don't expect to pay Chinatown prices for these baked goods and honestly they have their own little spin to them different from Chinatown. Really delicious pastries and I highly recommend!
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
A pop-up, family owned bakery that's only open on Sundays. I bought a salted egg cookie, an egg tart, and Japanese cheesecake. They were all pretty tasty but the price was expensive even by Berkeley standards! The egg tart, which was no bigger than the 2 in. in diameter, was $6! For that price, I could get 4 in Chinatown... The salted egg tart had a mild salted egg flavor from the incorporated bits but I wished it was a bit saltier. The cheesecake was fluffy and mildly sweet (aka perfect). Staff were also very friendly
google avatar

Shannon Z.

Yelp
Year Of The Snake is a mother/daughter run pop-up bakery, they are friendly and fast. The chocolate chip and sesame cookie ($3) had a wonderful brown butter flavor. It was a tad bit too sweet, but also no regrets!
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
Pastry pop up happens on Sundays Very unique and delicious pastries. My favorites have been the sesame chip cookie, Japanese cheesecake, and meat pie They offer a variety of Asian American inspired treats and also have Vietnamese coffee. There is some standing table areas outside if you want to eat a quick bite but no traditional seating so prepare to take it out.
google avatar

Kate K.

Yelp
Mind-blowing selection of pastries, from meat pies to cookies and cheesecake. Get there early on Sunday for maximum options! My favorites are the egg tart, the lime and coconut bottlecap, and the sesame cookie. Delightful owners and amazing Vietnamese coffee, too.

brooke ..

Yelp
The pastries are beautiful, tasty, and unique. I like the different flavor combinations they pull off in American and French pastries. I've had the pumpkin cheesecake and Chinese sausage biscuit. Both of them were delicious. The cheesecake was light, airy, and not too sweet. It almost felt healthy (lol). The biscuit was a delicious savory option. The women who run the business are kind and patient. She helped me decide what to get based on my tastes.

Jane W.

Yelp
Omg. Best egg tart I've ever had and biscuit was so delicious. What a lovely shop! Asked for the best-sellers and was recommended the egg tarts and Chinese sausage biscuit. They were both so well made. The flaky crust of the egg tart was unreal. Will definitely return to try more!
google avatar

Yelp
Why have I never stumbled across this delightful mother/sisterhood making upscale versions of my childhood treats until today o'clock??? This is a Sunday only walk in bakery with all the savory and sweet treats labeled and displayed for your eyes to feast upon, your mouth to water, and your sad brain to try and narrow down how much you can possibly consume. Tea eggs, tea eggs, tea eggs. Had to and regretted it not. Marinated and marbled with patience and care - the egg was not overcooked and each savory bite was a familiar flash from back in the day. Went for the key lime bottle cap and Chinese sausage and green onion biscuit to branch out a bit and YUMMO!! The bottle cap was a nice flip on the bottle cap pie so the "cap" was an amazing pie crust like pastry with the key lime glaze poured on top. I'm saving the biscuit but by the looks of it alone, the biscuit came to win. From a fellow year of the snake sis to another...see you soon!
google avatar

Kelsey S.

Yelp
These are some of the best pastries I've ever had. Texture, flavor...just wow. Thank you for blessing the people with your talent, Chef Patty!
google avatar

Sammy L.

Yelp
So happy we made it in right before closing. Friendly and delicious pastries. Definitely want to come back !
google avatar

Grace H.

Yelp
The pastries are tasty and fresh. The people are very friendly to everyone, great service! It's a very friendly atmosphere and the food is great!
google avatar

Sara K.

Yelp
Wow, this really was the best egg tart I've ever had. I'm not even sure i like egg tarts, but I will definitely be back for more and will be bringing these to parties and birthdays in the future. We got a pack of 6, and they had just come out of the oven so we ate one in the car - the crust is so thick and flaky, the vanilla so perfect, and the warm gooey custard was literally to die for.
google avatar

Jordan K.

Yelp
We just stumbled in on the way to 3rd Culture. Very inventive flavors and textures. We just tried the black sesame bostock and the egg yolk cookie. Both were perfect and I'm excited to try some of the savory options (corn cheesecake, tomato onigiri).

Keiko M.

Yelp
I had a bite of their egg tart, thinking "wow that's the best egg tart I ever had.." And my husband said exactly same thing. Their Japanese style cheese cake is Super as well, so light and fluffy. 1000times better than some cheesecakes I waited in long lines to get in the past.

Ryan F.

Yelp
Everything I've tried is amazing. For me this place is in that special category where you would auto recommend it to anyone. Visitors, friends, people who recently moved to the area. Maybe the best pastry I ever tasted.
