This cozy family-owned spot in Boyle Heights serves up homestyle Mexican fare like chilaquiles and tacos, all with mouthwatering handmade tortillas.
"Yeya’s chalkboard menu is so faded you might strain to make out what’s on it, so here’s a general summary: this Boyle Heights lunch counter prepares a wide range of homey Mexican dishes, from tacos with fresh tortillas to huevos a la mexicana, chilaquiles, whole-fried mojarras, and, the highlight, a bathtub-sized bowl of steaming pozole rojo. We like ours with pork (chicken is also available) because the giant icebergs of pig bobbing in the murky soup are so soft your front teeth are the only things you need to cut through them. Chile-stained fat pools at the edges, but this broth tastes nourishing rather than spicy. Add some of the fiery chipotle salsa on the side to turn up the heat a few notches, though." - Sylvio Martins
