Meet the Icons of Taipei’s Renowned Street Food Scene | Eater

"A traditional wheel cake vendor producing griddle-cooked cakes with a crispy exterior and a variety of sweet and savory fillings — sweet cream, purple sweet potato, sweet red bean, shredded turnip, among others. The seller preserves a Japanese-era snack adapted to Taiwanese tastes, makes several hundred cakes a day, and finishes operations once the day’s batch sells out." - Chris Horton

The fabric market here is world class (per my wife who is a career seamstress). Wide range of choices. Shopkeepers I saw from a distance (I stay out of sight in case price discussions arise) here seem universally nice and helpful, and not pushy at all. Most of the fabrics and other sewing needs are on floors 2 and 3. The prices did not appear to be posted in most cases, seemed to vary quite a bit from shop to shop, so use appropriate bargaining skills and maybe don’t look wealthy? The prices my wife was quoted were in many cases a very good USA price, not a super bargain as in e.g. South America and the Middle East. Note that this place was very well air conditioned on floor 3, and floor 2 was also comfortable temperature wise.

Google
A must-visit if you’re looking for a real slice of local life in Taipei. Go early when the market first opens—totally worth the morning wake-up. There are two stalls you absolutely need to try: a Japanese shop near the front entrance serving fresh sashimi (yes, sashimi for breakfast!) and another one known for its sticky oil rice. Both were unforgettable. The vibe here is vibrant and authentic, with a great mix of sights, smells, and flavours. It’s the kind of place where you feel Taiwan’s culinary roots come alive. Whether you’re here to eat, explore, or just soak up the atmosphere, Yongle Market delivers the full local experience.

An old world market that’s great to walk through early in the morning. You can see all the staff getting ready for their day ahead. Lots of restaurant stalls with local meals and shopping.

Local air-conditioned market that is not big in size. Many stalls selling sushi, sashimi with a couple of them having long queues. 2 stalls selling traditional sticky rice cake (kueh) almost a few vegetables and fruit stalls.

Bustling indoor market with many food specialty shops, including a very popular sushi and sashimi shop. Popular with locals and tourists alike.

There are two local food eateries in this traditional and old market that are outstanding. It mostly caters to local folks who at times resent foreigners and tourists. The first is the bento boxes of mushrooms and chicken with the oiled rice which is excellent, but my review is about the marulong? Sashimi restaurant which has some of the freshest sashimi and fried fish in Taipei. I know I shouldn’t broadcast this too much but the prices and quality is just outstanding!! We’ve tried this place at least five times in our last two visits and it is still outstanding. The best thing to order is the sashimi combo (not the sashimi belly) and the nigiri combo. The fish is just outstanding and cheap. You also can go and ladle a wonderful seafood soup as often as you like. The cost was under $30 for the two of us. You absolutely have to wait in a queue if you go after 12 pm but it’s worth it!!

Yelp
I really enjoyed walking around Yongle Market. I love just walking around a busy place and seeing how mom and pop shops operate. There are a lot of unique Taiwanese food vendors that I really recommend but that one that stole my stomach was the sushi one.

Yelp
I'm so impressed by the Yongle Market in the Datong District in Taipei! Since my relatives know I cosplay, they recommended that I check out the fabric vendors here, and I could totally lose myself here in this maze of various selections. Total fabric porn, oh my goodness! Aisle after aisle after aisle of bargains and fairly priced fabrics for amazing quality! There was a wide variance of Asian fabrics that are both hard to find AND expensive in the US, so if you're coming from overseas like me, get your fabrics here! When you're done shopping for fabrics, there's also food stalls outside. I got some excellent stinky tofu here right in front of the fabric market. Datong District is also notable for its Japanese period and Qing period architecture, especially along Dihua Street. Certainly worth exploring!

Yelp
Very intriguing place and certainly a unique Taipei experience for those who don't mind getting out of their comfort zone a bit - this market is famous for its wholesale fabric stores. There are also unique Taiwanese eateries and a number of historical buildings near by. The market itself is not very clean and unless you're looking for special fabrics (from traditional Chinese silk to fabric for upholstery, you name it, they have it!) or in the fashion/ fabric business, you may find it a crowded and untidy. Some stores also custom make draperies for incredible low prices.
