The 20 Best Restaurants in Waikiki, Hawaiʻi | Eater

"Yoshitsune is one of the few old-school, independent Japanese restaurants left in Waikīkī, tucked into the back of the Park Shore Hotel. Regulars order the two-tier chirashi, presented like a box of jewels, and the kamameshi, iron pots of rice simmered with seafood such as crab, abalone, or, in the fall, matsutake mushrooms. Yoshitsune also offers a wonderful traditional Japanese breakfast, a full spread including housemade tofu, grilled fish, miso soup, and small sides. Vibe check: The dining room is often filled with locals and Japanese speakers. Weekday mornings generally offer a quiet start to the day." - Martha Cheng

13 Hidden Restaurants in Waikiki, Honolulu | Eater

"Many of the Japanese restaurants in Waikīkī are new outposts of chains from Japan, but Yoshitsune is an old-school, independent holdout tucked into the back of Park Shore hotel. In the early mornings, the restaurant serves a traditional Japanese breakfast teishoku (set meal) of broiled fish, rice, pickles, and natto. At lunch and dinner, many tables order kamameshi, iron pots of rice simmered with seafood such as crab or abalone (and in the fall, matsutake mushrooms). Also stunning is the two-tier chirashi, presented like a box of jewels. [$$$]" - Martha Cheng

The wait time was quite long, even with a reservation. It seems that having a reservation doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be seated right away. The menu had a good variety. We ordered the sukiyaki, tempura, and the most affordable sushi set. As a Japanese person who really misses sushi from home, I appreciated my friend ordering it for me — but honestly, sushi is much better and cheaper in Japan. On the other hand, the sukiyaki was reliably delicious. You can order a raw egg to dip the beef in, which I highly recommend. The lighting inside was quite dim, which made the food look less appealing, even though it tasted good. That was a bit of a shame.

I heard that this restaurant offers authentic Japanese home meals, so we made a reservation for dinner. We ordered the two-tier chirashi course, udon, chicken cutlet, and a broiled mackerel course. My kids enjoyed the udon and chicken cutlet, although they found nothing special about them. I liked the chirashi course. The sashimi was fresh, and I enjoyed the egg pudding and some of the side dishes. The rice bowl was okay, but if you're looking for something exciting, you may not find it here. However, if you want to experience traditional Japanese home cooking, I recommend trying this place. The prices for the food were reasonable.

A hidden gem recommended by my local friend. Two Tiered- Chirashi set dinner tasted fresh with lots of seafood treasures. The uni, pink sugar like tiny shrimp and abalone sashimi were tasty and not overpowering. Appetizers were delightful snack bites of homemade flavored vegetables and geo duck. Chawanmushi was smooth and flavorful. Overall food quality was great and good value. The servers were friendly. It was busy dinner time so it took a while to get everything in order and water refill, taking away dishes. The staff worked really hard to serve every table with lots of small dishes. It’s best to enjoy this lovely place without rushing.

A bunch of my mom's friends took us out to dinner here. Having stayed at the Park Shore Waikiki before, I never took note of this restaurant that's located toward the back of the lobby. ATMOSPHERE: I can forgive it's dated design as it feels like you're dining at a hole-in-the-wall space in Tokyo. They even sport a tatami dining room where you sit on the floor. It was toasty inside, especially where I sat which was underneath one of the ductless a/c units that did not cool off the room properly. And, instead of Japanese music playing overhead, we were treated to unbecoming pop music. MENU: Shochu, sake, beer, wine, Japanese apps, full course dinners, hot pots, sushi, noodles, chazuke, seafood, meats, pork, desserts. FOOD: House Made Tofu This specialty of theirs was included with most of the dishes. The super soft block of tofu was precision-cut to resemble udon-like noodles when pulled apart, drizzled with a subtle tempura sauce and garnished with grated daikon. Consuming with chopsticks proved a challenge as it kept breaking apart. Sake Steamed Clams The clams were small as was the portion for the price. I liked the broth as you could taste the natural clam juices and just a hint of sake. Nabeyaki Udon I was actually craving a rice dish but nothing sounded enticing and no one wanted to share a hot pot with me, so I took a chance on this. Boy, what a big mistake it was. The broth, while searing hot, was horribly bland. Toppings were plentiful, including shrimp tempura, a dropped-in egg, enoki mushrooms, won bok, green onions and a huge piece of aburrage. Noodles were plentiful and chewy. Adding in a swish of shoyu helped a bit but not by much as there was nothing to enhance to begin with. Pass! Everyone else on the table ordered full course dinners which included miso soup, a combo of small apps, rice, and chawanmushi (egg custard dessert). Several varieties of fish were not available, forcing some to re-order twice. SERVICE: My mom's friends have been here quite often so they know the elderly server well. She's a sweetheart, rough around the edges, and knows her stuff. Her old school ways don't include follow up throughout the meal which also resulted in a low alcohol bill as we just had one drink each. Chilled hand towels were given before meal service. Food delivery was quick but the order in which they came out was backwards. Everyone's entree came out first with the rice arriving at midpoint through the meal forcing an ETA question, and miso soup at the end. Our table was cluttered with dirty dishes along with the soiled hand towels till the very end. No clean up at all throughout. There was a younger guy helping her who could've helped her bus but I guess that's not their protocol. OVERALL: Despite the lengthy menu, choices for me were slight. The lethargic vibe and service yearns for a dose of spry.

My favorite Japanese restaurant on the island. I flew to Oahu just to have their homemade tofu. It's so simple, yet it tastes extraordinary. I got the butterfish misoyaki dinner set.

Authentic Japanese meal with excellent service. They provided such a great experience for our toddler. We ordered the butterfish set and unagi rice box, both were delicious. They even gave the little one a gift!

If you’re looking for truly authentic Japanese cuisine in Honolulu, Yoshitsune is a hidden gem. I had the pleasure of enjoying their course meal, and it was unlike any Japanese dining experience I’ve had before. I ordered the tofu noodle, miso butterfish, and their signature two-tiered chirashi—each dish was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully balanced in flavor. It felt more like a traditional Japanese home-style meal rather than your typical ramen or donkatsu experience. As someone who’s had plenty of ramen, yakitori, and other popular dishes, this was a refreshing and elegant change of pace. Highly recommend if you’re looking to experience the quieter, more refined side of Japanese cuisine.

Super delicious! A family run restaurant. It is inside a hotel, known by words of mouths. Required reservation for a large group. Excellent menu with several set options or individual items. Best is to choose different sets as it would have several dishes to sample. Highly recommended in Waikiki.

Yelp
Closest to Japanese at reasonable price. Season for Matsutake mushrooms are a great choice.

Yelp
Our favorite meal of the trip! This restaurant is hidden in the lobby of a hotel, so you will have to park on the streets. Upon entering, you're greeted by friendly waiters who take you to your seat in an intimate restaurant. We opted to get the coursed meals, so we got the miso butterfish (36), salmon (33), and sashimi combo (50). Each course has little bites that come before the entree. First come the cold apps, and I couldn't even tell you what they were but each had a burst of flavor. Then we got the japanese steamed egg, which was what I came here for. And lastly, our entrees came with miso soup and white rice. We were even surprised they gave complimentary matcha ice cream at the end! The salmon was simple, seasoned with salt. The sashimi typically comes with 12 pieces with a variety of cuts. However, we only wanted salmon and tuna, so the wait accommodated for the request (free of charge), and let us know it would come with only 10 pieces though. It was more than enough and the fish was very fresh. And lastly, the miso butterfish (aka black cod) was our tables favorite! So flavorful, juicy, and fatty. What a great last dinner to mark the end of this trip, we will be back!

Yelp
Rei gave us great service! The ambiance is typical of going to a Japanese restaurant. They were very crowded and reservations are recommended. You have to wait a while for your food but it's worth the wait! The food is good and it's the first time that I ate soft tofu that when it is separated, it becomes noodles. The sides were tasty, miso soup is served and the dinner portions are filling. I had the Tempura, which had shrimp and vegetable tempura. I will definitely dine here again!

Yelp
Yoshitsune is an ancient samurai's name (like Yosaku, Daigoro, etc) This is a traditional Japanese restaurant inside the lobby of Park Shore Hotel. This is a place where everyone are Japanese, from the chefs to the servers to most of the customers. The menu is old school traditional country side Japanese "Ryokan" Teishoku style. I've had the " Mugifuji premium pork fillet cutlet" full course dinner that includes together with appetizer, chawanmushi (Japanese egg custard), rice, miso soup, pickles, Takigawa tofu (house made tofu w/ soy milk) and a scoop of matcha ice cream for $39.79 Worth the experience.

Yelp
Situated in the Park Shore hotel is Yoshitsune. Valet parking. Enter the hotel and the dining room we were in was almost through the kitchen Service was good, food delicious. I had the Masutake set. Masutake broth was so sweet and flavorful, I even ate every piece in the little pot. Tofu was so silky and noodle like. Tempura was good, not as crispy as I would have liked but still good. Generous portion of Masutake rice, I had to bring leftovers home. Room was crowded but still comfortable to have a conversation. I would return .

Yelp
Lunch in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii... I've heard about this authentic, old-school restaurant for a while and finally made plans with Irene to check it out. Located on the ground level of the Park Shore Waikiki Hotel, we both parked at a nearby elementary school that hosts a weekly Farmer's Market. (I did buy something at the Farmer's Market, so I really was a customer!) We were seated promptly and greeted in a customary fashion. The service was polite as usual for almost every Japanese restaurant. The place was cozy and quiet... like we were in Japan... because of the subtle decor... it was quite pleasant! I got the Tiered Chirashi. It had two layers of fresh seafood! The starters (fancy tofu and tsukemono dishes)and matcha ice cream filled me to the top! Now that's a Complete Meal!!! I was so happy! That was a really memorable experience!

Yelp
Authentic Japanese food located in the Park Shore Hotel. Service is very attentive. I had the butterfish dinner set, which came with rice, an appetizer, chawan mushi, and their famous house-made silky tofu. The price is reasonable for everything included. The interior is clean and well-decorated. Would love to come back here.

Yelp
Very unassuming authentic Japanese restaurant at The Park Shore Hotel in Waikiki. Those of you visiting looking for authentic Japanese food, this is the spot. Definitely a hidden gem! Ambiance - 5/5 Service - 5/5 Food - 5/5 Made a reservation for lunch the day prior. Best to call them for a reservation. We ordered a few items - nigiri, butterfish bento, and noodle dish. The bento box pretty much is a full on lunch. The butterfish is very tender and flavorful. The side dishes were excellent. We also had a variety of nigiris and all were very fresh. We were seated in the back. Maybe because we made a reservation. Ambiance feels like an intimate authentic Japanese setting They do have a bar seating as well. Service is excellent. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Real Talk. $34 for a tuna fillet full course dinner that included tuna fillet teriyaki steak, miso soup, small side dishes , salad, homemade tofu noodle, Chawanmushi (Japanese egg custard - savory tasting) , a bowl of rice and a scoop of ice cream... and it's soooo delicious! Where can you find quality and quantity of food for an affordable price. I was worry that the tuna would be a small amount and I would be hungry -- I was happily wrong. Tuna fillet was the size of a men's wallet. The sauce was chef kiss (really yummy) because my best friend doesn't like tuna and she thought this tuna was delicious. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable (and good looking to me ). You get greeted hello and goodbye by all staff. The place has the vibe of authentic Japanese restaurant in Japan. All wood furnitures. The place is located in Park Shore Waikiki Hotel (pretty lobby - great for pics). Hands down it was my fav restaurant during my whole trip. I hope to be back here when I come back to Honolulu.

Yelp
Love how it transport you to Japan... Yoshitsune is a super cute Japanese Restaurant found right in the lobby of the Park Shore Hotel that's located right on the corner where Kalakaua meets Kapahulu and you'd never expect to find such a hidden gem but it's here and is something worth a peek. Love the classic noren versus a door and signifies that they're open as we walked in we're instantly greeted "irasshai!" and seating immediately in the back area where the main dining has the sushi bar we later found out that they have a larger dining room in the back as well that would be wonderful for larger gathering but is a great separation in dining area is interesting. Looking over their lunch menu there is an impressive selection sushi rolls to Japanese A5 Wagyu courses though we came hungry "Shokado Bento" is what I was craving as the variety is always fun. The "Soba Gozen Bento" was it as sit consists of some yummy items but tempura is something that I do get especially if they have shrimp and the cross contamination is something that I don't take the risk so I asked about subbing it for something like chicken and was told that changes are not possible and was offered to select something in the Soba section...what!? Pushing forward and refused I decided on the "Ushiwaka Bento" with Pork Shogayaki and they was told it comes with tempura...to which I told her that I'll just give it to my friend and put it to the side (then says I can eat just the veggie tempura) getting upset then as she's completely clueless with allergies only then hearing her put the order in to have been told by the chef that I could get chicken teriyaki instead...aiiiiyahhhh! Long story short she asked if I wanted Salmon or Saba and confused I just said Salmon which is a completely different bento "Yoshitsune Bento"...nevertheless it was delicious even though she brough just one miso soup instead of two it seems that she was confused in more ways than one. Fresh sashimi, salmon, chicken teriyaki...didn't get any rice but simply just loooooved the tofu as it's cut like noodles soaked in a light shoyu sauce was the best refreshing version of tofu I've ever had. Service was quite a hot mess but was very friendly and besides all the ordering mess we enjoyed it all and gave us separate checks which made it very convenient and appreciated it and would totally recommend here as they have some impressive menu offerings including dessert which was a scoop of ice cream (vanilla or matcha) which you already know is so cool! Thank you!

Yelp
Located inside Park Shore hotel in Waikiki, this Japanese restaurant is amazing! The food was all beautifully plated and tasted very fresh. The best thing I ate was the eggplant, had the most amazing flavor. Tofu was so cool, made in house and looked like noodles, so fun! Service was impeccable too. We had a large party around 15 people or so and we had one server that did most of the work. She had a couple people help her a few times but for the most part it was all her! They gave us a separate back area which was really nice. Eventually when we were getting to the end of our meal they did seat a couple of smaller parties near us but no big deal. We had such a nice dinner, I would love to go back in the future.

Yelp
Whenever I come to Oahu, this place is a must-go restaurant. Traditional Japanese breakfast with excellent service. I have been here twice now, and both times did not disappoint. The japanese breakfast sets are delicious, love the small appetizer dishes they pair the main dish with.

Yelp
If you want legit Japanese food, where everyone is speaking Japanese (the staff and all the guests), go to Japan. Or you could go to Yoshitsune in Honolulu, and you wouldn't know the difference. I have a friend who visits from Australia regularly and over the years we've hunted down ALL the sukiyaki dishes on this island. I thought we'd found them all, but then I saw Yoshitsune. I initially scoffed at the $52 price (per person) for the Wagyu beef sukiyaki, but after the meat came out and the server arranged the vegetables and cooked the whole thing for us (&told us when to eat it!), I understood why. The side dishes (miso soup, the homemade tofu, and greens, pickled cabbage) were all amazing in their own way, and the meal comes with matcha or vanilla ice cream too. The quality of the meat and veggies was excellent. Best sukiyaki dish on island so far! Parking is $8/2hrs with the valet, or street parking. Located in Park Shore Hotel on Kapahulu.

Yelp
Food was good and clean. Slightly overpriced though, not good for young kids as it's a little tight. The server was very nice considering she was well over booked. The management needs more severs, for the amount of customers they see. I get it, finding staff is hard currently but hopefully they can get more workers. As other customers walked out because it took so long.

Yelp
Such an amazing experience we went twice - once for dinner the other lunch! Tofu noodle dish was a trip a the cold udon was a refreshing way to beat the heat. It felt like we were actually in Japan when dining inside & the staff was extremely friendly!

Yelp
Was in town for vacation looking for an authentic Japanese cuisine restaurant. Everything was delicious, with generous portions and fantastic service. Do not skip out on the futomaki! One of the best I've tried ever! Sukiyaki was on point too, prepared in a traditional way and served with raw egg yolk.

Yelp
Our friend introduced us to this restaurant. We got the beef course and the butterfish course. There was a lot of food, everything was delicious, and the service was also great. Everything tasted so fresh and was well seasoned. Highly recommend for great Japanese food! A nice, quiet, establishment. Will definitely return

Yelp
For our last day in Hawaii I really wanted Japanese breakfast. Yoshitsune looked great so we stopped by as soon as they opened ~8:30. We both opted for the Japanese breakfast set which comes with a fish of your choice (some may be a bit extra, but I don't remember), miso soup, rice, egg, and a few vegetable sides. There's also an optional add on or two. We opted to try to tofu since it seemed really popular. At the end you get fruit, which was papaya for us but it may differ based on time of the year. I thought the meal was fantastic and so beautifully presented. I love butterfish and this one was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The sides are also great, as is the miso soup. You get quite a bit of food (miso soup is unlimited as well) so I was able to take some fish and rice to go. I made some rice balls for the plane! I forget how much the meal cost but I thought it was very reasonable given the quantity and quality of food. Will definitely be back next time we're in Waikiki!

Yelp
I recently dined at Yoshitsune and opted for Course B, which included butterfish, tofu, chawanmushi, miso soup, a variety of mini sides, and dessert. Let me just say, everything was absolutely delicious! The meal was perfectly paced, and by the time the butterfish arrived, I was almost too full to eat it--but I'm so glad I did! The butterfish was the highlight of the meal: moist, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The tofu was also a favorite, silky smooth and tasty. It was almost like eating noodles! Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. I left feeling satisfied and impressed with the quality of the food. It's on the pricier side because this set was $60, but for the quality, dining experience and service it was worth it!

Yelp
I returned here to try their dinner and it was equally impressive. I had the two tier chirashi bowl and it had a variety of raw fish, seafood, and condiments. All were very fresh and complimented each other nicely. One of the highlights of this meal was their homemade silken tofu. Its served like a piece of tofu but then comes apart like noodles. It tastes so good and I can't figure out how they prepare this! See video, you won't believe it's tofu. Service was also very good for dinner as it was for breakfast. They even changed our table before we ordered when a more spacious one opened up. We didn't say anything but it shows how much they care about their customers! This restaurant has a very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere. We had a party of six and had a very enjoyable evening just relaxing and enjoying some really good Japanese food.

Yelp
I worked in Waikiki for years and I haven't been to this restaurant. I heard about it but didn't have a chance to go since it's in hotel near the zoo. My friend mentioned that she came here several times and it was her favorite Japanese restaurant so I was happy to try here to celebrate our birthdays. I wasn't exactly sure where to valet my car, but my friend was there waiting after walking there from home and guided me from outside. It was a Sunday lunch at 11 am and the Zoo's parking was packed and decided to do the $8 valet that you pay later at the front desk with their validation stamp and gratuity to the bell hop/valet person. Yeah no free valet parking from the restaurant or at a discounted rate. You can tell it's an older hotel since the driveway was narrow. There a one way turn in driveway near Tucker & Bevy. Restaurant was located in the Park Shore Waikiki Hotel on Kapahulu Avenue near Kalakaua Ave. I think they are busier for breakfast and packed for dinner. I'm glad had a lot room for lunch! There were three sections of the restaurant. A room to the left and bigger section in the back by the bathroom to the right. As you enter there was a front reservation/check in area and the bar on the left with a few tables. We were able to sit to the section to the left by the kitchen. There was one bathroom stall restroom each for men and women in the restaurant. They have keys to use the hotel restrooms too if busy. There was a lunch menu with some dinner entrees although the waitress said it was their lunch prices. I tried Mugifuji Premium Pork Filet Cutlet and my friend ordered her favorite fried fresh oysters. The food was excellent and delicious. The tender Mugifuji Premium Pork Filet Cutlet came with fluffy Japanese rice, the miso soup was good too. You can tell it's better than some Japanese restaurants. The tofu was so pretty and it's like tofu noodles. I haven't seen anything serve like this before. It came with a dessert of green tea ice cream! It was an authentic classy but simple Japanese restaurant. It's been here for over 30 years! Now I know where to park or if I can find parking on the street but it may be a walking distance of a block or two away. I would come back and try something else and maybe I'll take my mom. Food and service was excellent. It's a hidden gem dined here by locals and visitors.

Yelp
Old school Japanese restaurant at the quiet end of Waikiki, by Diamond Head. I usually have their Japanese breakfast at least once, and we come here when we're looking for a clean dinner that's not full of grease and sauce. This time, the breakfast was oddly served in disjointed order, with the fish coming very last, long after the rice and everything else. If you go, maybe ask them to serve everything at once because otherwise it really makes no sense. They first served us some appetizers and the spinach. Then after that, they gave us our rice and miso soup. Yup. Just that. About 8 minutes later, the fish came. Weird, and kinda ruined the experience. But the house-made tofu is still very nice. We also went there last night for a simple dinner. I had the nabeyaki udon, and it was sadly one of the worst I ever had, which is surprising as their food is usually pretty solid. Their simple cabbage oshinko (pickles) was pretty tasty and you get a good amount for your $10. The hubby had their green salad, which was HUGE - basically, add some protein and it's an entree size. The carrot dressing was excellent. He also had their chicken karaage and he said it was decent. We both had their chawanmushi and it was a very light but nice dish. Overall, a good option if you're looking for some fresh vegetables and light, clean protein while in Waikiki.

Yelp
Found by my wife and I the last time we came to Hawaii, I went again a few days ago with friends on a 5 day trip for a friend's wedding. It's burrowed in the back of a hotel lobby, but the interior is a lot larger than you'd expect. Previously, we'd come here several times due to the exceptional quality of the fish and presentation. I'm glad to see that it hasn't changed. The stacked chirashi and agadashi tofu are two of my favorites here. They provide their homemade tofu as an appetizer, and their agadashi is probably the best i've had of any restaurant. The real star of my meal though is the stacked chirashi. From the relatively large serving size to the presentation with pink salt, there really isn't anything to complain about if you like variety. For about $60, it's also quite reasonable for the quality and quantity. No issues with service; we had very attentive waitresses. I plan to come down again the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
The quality, the service and the portions... PERFECTION. Nice calm vibe with wonderful employees. Thank you!

Yelp
5/5 value + quality + taste. I'm always skeptical of hotel-centered restaurants. I was even more skeptical when I saw the prices, but omg SO GOOD. No frills, japanese spot with a large menu of tasty items - recommend. Set. *SERVICE* Servers are authentically Japanese and so friendly, my two year old left with a few new shiny hot wheels and was so thrilled as we all rolled out full and happy. At times a bit slow, but overall very pleased. *FOOD* Meal sets appear expensive but come with so many courses, my family enjoyed the double tiered chirashi bowl and I loved the $34 tuna entree, came with: - appetizer plate - homemade tofu: omg this was so good I think I could eat it everyday all day??? - rice: I normally hate rice but this was perfectly textured rice - salad: ACTUALLY good ginger carrot dressing - miso soup: salty miso - chawan mushi: UUMMM DROOOL, custardy egg with savory dashi I'm not here long, but tempted to make another stop before leaving. One of my fav spots in Honolulu by far!

Yelp
Delicious authentic upscale Japanese teishoku. Impeccable service. Dined here with three others. Only one who had been here before and highly recommended restaurant. The evening was filled with multiple dishes in the course meals. Two of us decided to get the combination course meals which, besides many side dishes, came with your choice of salmon ($50) or misoyaki butterfish ($60) AND assorted tempura and sashimi. The combinations costed out about $20 more than the single course meals. Would definitely get again. Or perhaps the chirashi next time, which also looked excellent. Add on excellent conversation and company and enjoy a most memorable evening! Restaurant is located in the Park Shore Hotel on Kapahulu Avenue just before it intersects with Kalakaua. Parking is valet for $8 plus tip. Or, metered parking just on the street or in the zoo parking lot just across the street. Pay by credit card and input mobile number and you can add additional time remotely if needed. Looking forward to returning, hopefully soon. And will remember to take pictures then!

Yelp
Our server was delightfully patient in answering my questions and was very attentive. Our meal began with their house made tofu in a light broth and OMG, it was oh so light and oh so flavorful. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, tender and most delicious. This was truly one of the best sashimi meals we've ever had. We capped it off with their homemade green tea and vanilla ice cream. We left fantastically happy.

Yelp
I came here with 3 friends for our Hawaii trip and boy did it not disappoint! We all went for the omakase nigiri sushi which was $118 per person which is pretty cheap compared to prices in LA! The starters were all excellent.. I honestly thought the best thing here was the house made tofu noodles and the chawanmushi(steamed egg). The god dam tofu noodles was something I have not experience before.. pretty crazy right? I mean it's just tofu cut into noodle form but dam was the texture amazing. The tofu noodles were firm enough to pick up without breaking but also melted in your mouth like cold butter?! Does that sh*t make any sense to you?!? Texture is literally everything in that dish, the grated daikon, shredded green onion and the soy ponzu sauce complimented it so well. The soy sauce even tasted Smokey and homemade! Like as if you were to combine sukiyaki and soy sauce together then put it through a smoker. The steamed egg was definitely another one for the books! The texture and umami was so different compared to other steamed eggs I've had. It honestly tasted like if you were to mix egg and hand silken tofu together. Adding soy sauce is optional for the steamed egg if you want another depth of flavor. Honestly can't go wrong with all the nigiri. They all taste as fresh as it can get or maybe I'm getting a placebo effect since I'm near the ocean haha. The sweet shrimp, fresh water eel and toro were definitely memorable and for that price?!? You really can't go wrong with it. Since the food was so good I guess I'll let the service slide even though there were times he didn't know which fish was what. He told us the chef/owner is straight Japanese and doesn't speak a lick of English. Honestly I didn't care at that point because that's how you know it's authentic as it can get. Is it the best omakase I've had? Nah but for the amount of food we got and the quality It's definitely top 10 on my list.

Yelp
When we stay in Honolulu, we always go to there. They have many choice menu and can enjoy every one. Staff are nice and good food.

Yelp
I would say that this is one of the last authentic Japanese restaurants that you'll find in Waikiki. Conveniently located inside of the Park Shore Hotel, straight to the back on their first floor. Valet parking is available, though we walked from our workplace, so I would recommend contacting the restaurant or guest services for validation details. Definitely make reservations beforehand as this place fills up quickly! We called in during their business hours about 2 weeks prior to our reservation date and easily got a table for 6, first thing for lunch. When we arrived, we were pleasantly greeted by a staff member, who showed us to our table. The restaurant itself feels like you're in Japan, with dark lacquered paneling and shoji screen-like walls. My coworker remembers there being a private tatami room back in the days, but I'm unsure if that's still available for sit-down service. The menu is quite extensive and overwhelming at first glance. But for lunch, we opted for their lunch bento specials and got quite a deal! The main protein (chicken teriyaki or a ginger pork) came with miso soup, white rice, side dishes and dessert (a scoop of Dave's green tea ice cream). And unbeknownst to us, the server somehow knew that it was one of our co-worker's birthdays and brought a special dessert made with kanten, fruits and vanilla ice cream, what a lovely surprise and treat. Overall, we had a great time and I would be interested in coming back to try out their dinner menu!

Yelp
Although located in a hotel, the restaurant reminds me of Japan. From the decor to the people and to the food. Walking in, all I hear is people speaking in Japanese. The sushi chef, the waitresses and hosts, and the customers. Debated between the combo full course with miso butterfish (comes with sashimi) or the regular full course (no sashimi combo). So glad I opted for the regular because the regular already came with a lot of items. I wouldn't have had room for dessert or my small hot sake. Everything was beautifully presented... each item amazingly handcrafted (or so it tasted like it). Starting with refreshing appetizers, you get an assorted veggies. The cucumbers surprised me because it sandwiched these fermented natto-looking beans (which were absolutely delicious). Also included a little sweet shrimp with sweet glazed mayo on top. Another pickled but savory veggie and tamago. Next came the miso soup, chawanmushi, and miso butterfish. Even the chawanmushi had a little surprise underneath. A good and delicious surprise. Star of the show was definitely the miso butterfish. It was perfectly glazed and lived up to its buttery name. Probably one of the best miso-glazed fish I have had. Normally I am not a fan of butterfish, but the seasoning, preparation, and freshness of the fish make up for me not liking that type of fish. My waitress/host (Tamiko) was the sweetest and most adorable. Reminds me of my little hardworking grandma. Overall experience? One of the best I have had here in Hawai'i, and would definitely do it again!

Yelp
Wow that was an amazing Japanese Breakfast. So much food and refillable rice and miso soup. We got the saba and the salmon and natto. The fish was prepared perfectly and so moist. I love the homemade tofu with a surprising texture and shape. There was a good variety of pickles. Loved our waitress she was so cute and helpful. The ambiance really feels like you are enjoying breakfast in Japan. We will be back soon.

Yelp
I needed one good meal to "treat myself" during my one week here in Honolulu. I've always loved Japanese food, and since I couldn't eat sushi on this trip, I settled for Kaiseki. This restaurant came highly rated, and it was at the opposite end of Waikiki Beach, so that I could take the bus. I did make a reservation in advance. I highly recommend this, as the restaurant is located in a very popular hotel, and as the dinner hours started (6 PM), there was a steady flow of patrons coming in. Some of them had reservations, and some of them did not. Some of them were also just regulars in town. Essentially, I got the chef recommended set dinner. It came with an assorted side of small plates prior to the main meal itself. Part of the main meal included sashimi, which the waitress was very kind enough to swap out upon request given my condition, to fried salmon. I ate everything. There was not one particular dish that was amazing or bad. While I can say that, I am not a picky eater, and my love for Japanese food definitely helped in this regard, certain dishes may not pertain to certain people. The fish was cooked perfectly, wasn't over cooked at all, The very light breading on it was perfect. And it wasn't over seasoned, as it wasn't super salty like some other places do. Some restaurants in order to preserve the fish a little bit more will salt it heavily. The other thing that I want to add that some people may not know is that Japanese cooking focus on the form of Washoku, or balance between all dishes, served to someone. I did see some of the sushi dishes that were per other patrons, and I can't wait until I can eat sushi again. The fish was super fresh, and this place was so famous that one guy actually got double servings of salmon sushi. To know, you may want to ask the restaurant if they have a bathroom on site. Even though you would think that there are bathrooms in the lobby of the hotel that it's to use, it is not allowed for anyone, except for hotel guests, and you have to use a room key to access it. Needless to say, I was really grateful that my own hotel was only a 15 minute bus ride away, and I could actually hold it until I got home. I found the side dishes so much you need, and actually very enjoyable. They all accompanied each other fairly well, and the main parts of the set came out right after so you can enjoy different parts of it together. You can also wait and just eat the first couple dishes slowly. Will definitely come here again to try other things, especially the sushi .

Yelp
The best and most affordable omakase that I ever had. Price was at $118 for a 16 round course with appetizer and dessert. The fish melts in your mouth and each courses have an unique taste. The customer service was amazing, the waiter made sure to inform us that the chef is making ours and it will be coming in X minutes. They kept us inform with each round and made sure we knew what fish is each round. My favorite rounds were the sweet shrimp, uni, and eel. The atmosphere was pleasant and it wasn't busy when we went. I would totally recommend you to try this omakase if you are in Waikiki.

Yelp
Came twice here in one week as a guest. Food is great! Service varies depending on the night and how busy they are. Despite my multiple visits here inquired about the various tiers of Chirashi to be reminded of their differences. One tier for $42 had all the typical slices of sashimi. The two tiered for $10 more comes with ikura and more fish. We noted that the maguro in the one tier was better on this occasion. For $14 more you get uni. Photo shows the 3 different chirashi options.

Yelp
I'm surprised this place isn't more popular! It's tucked away inside a hotel, which might explain why it's not well-known, but it's truly a hidden gem. The staff are incredibly attentive, and the dining experience is fantastic. For just $50, you can enjoy a beautifully presented meal that feels like a special occasion. I always order the Omakase Set, and my sisters love the Saba Set. If you're in Honolulu, make sure to check this place out!

Yelp
We decided to splurge, and we're so glad we did. Got nearly the highest marked items on the menu, and they were quite delicious -- worth every penny. We truly felt like we were back in Japan. The fish was incredibly fresh, the flavors were tasty, the service was impeccable. Very cute ambience as well.

Yelp
I brought my Japanese family here and I'm so happy to found this restaurant! It was only 7min walk from our hotel and we were so excited to try their authentic Japanese breakfast. This restaurant was owned Japanese couple and they were so sweet and they were so friendly. We ordered salmon, mackerel, and cod breakfast and everything was so tasty!! Their dashinaki tamago was also yummy. I would definitely come back to Yoshitsune when I come back to Honolulu.

Yelp
We saw an Omakase menu and wanted to try it. It's located in a hotel, quite a walk from the central area. We sat in the back with everyone else, the front was empty so it looked deceiving. Big menu! I wanted to try many items but I ended up getting one of the full course dinner set with butterfish miso yaki. My husband got the Omakase 16 piece chef choice of nigiris. My dinner course started with the tofu in a soba like broth, it was delicious. Then the cold appetizers which I wasn't too fond of. Then the sashimi pieces, it was so good and you can taste the freshness. After I got some tempura and the butterfish. The butterfish is what it sounds like, it tasted like butter, so soft and flavorful. And the tempura was fried to perfection. Ended with some ice cream. The dinner menu was a great deal! My husbands Omakase was more traditional nigiri, he liked it but he said he was still very hungry after. It won't make you full if you're a big guy! Haha. We saw the table next to us doing the sukiyaki, it was made at the table and it smelled so good. Next time!

Yelp
My brother recommended this restaurant to me and my boyfriend after he visited here with his girlfriend. We're so thankful for his recommendation. Unlike a lot of the tourist-packed spots near Waikiki Beach, this is a tiny, hole-in-the-wall authentic Japanese restaurant tucked away inside a hotel lobby. After a romantic sunset stroll across Waikiki Beach, my boyfriend and I walked all the way here for dinner. Tamiko the waitress was like sweet granny as she served us dish after dish for our omakase dinner. We ordered the Omakase Nigiri Sushi option from the menu, which served 16 pieces of the chef's choice of nigiri sushi. They were all AMAZING. Everything tasted so fresh! At the beginning, we had a soft tofu dish, and a bowl of miso soup. Among our favorite tastings, the shrimp was so fresh, tender, and soft, and we craved for more of the caviar after we devoured it all and did not leave a bit behind. I adored the unagi, tuna, salmon, and mackeral as well. All the sashimi was very fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. We finished off the dinner with strawberry ice cream. What a wonderful and romantic sushi dinner in Oahu. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
The food is real Japanese food, that is different than most of American "Japanese" food. I specifically like sashimi and butterfish.

Yelp
I just recently discovered this restaurant although I know of the hotel from decades ago. This restaurant is a hidden gem.. hiding in the Park Shore Hotel . I have never heard of them because they don't really advertise. They're located in the back of the lobby. As soon as you enter( everyone's so friendly as they greet you when you enter).. it seems like a very small restaurant with a few tables. But as you walk further to the back .. there is another big room with even more tables . I like the ambiance of the restaurant.. reminds me of Japan . The service we got was excellent. It didn't seem long after we ordered that the food was coming out. The temperature of the food was excellent. Portion size was great. I had the Grilled Salted Salmon which was excellent.. very moist and tasty. I ordered the full course so it included the salmon .. tempura .. sashimi ... appetizers .. Chawanmushi ..fresh hand made tofu ..miso soup and dessert . The menu was very interesting as it gave you many food choices and many course options to choose from depending on how big a eater you are . The only issue I had was the parking . They only have valet or park at the zoo. We parked at the zoo which wasn't that far but late at nite can get scary as the crazy animals come out .. (the human kind). I definitely would like to come back and try the other food selections.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would. I have never seen such a mismanaged restaurant in my life. We go in for a table and were seated it in the back room. The place is dirty, and the walls are all stained and full of holes. After we were seated, we sat there and were ignored by the staff for 25 minutes. When they finally came over, they informed us they were out of everything that we wanted to order. The menu prices are also outrageous. I could not believe what they were charging that we receive such horrible service. One of the worst restaurant experiences in my life. We all got up and walked out - no one even tried to stop us.

Yelp
Soft tofu is pretty amazing and all the other sashimi are pretty fresh. You got to try the Unagi Don so delicious. I would say this restaurant has the most authentic Japanese dishes The service is so friendly I thought that I was in Japan when I was inside the restaurant

Yelp
Came here for a special occasion its a higher end Japanese restaurant. It has the feel of an authentic Japanese restaurant and meals are served in courses so the meal takes longer than just brining you a bento box all at once, unless you order just a bowl or noodles or something simple. The menu was quite confusing as the Full course dinner was almost identical to the Imperial full course dinner with the addition of the eggplant. Didn't seem like it was worth it with such a steep jump in price ($40-$60) When I asked about it, she said the sashimi was different too. I was torn between the unagi kamameshi and the full course dinner with butterfish misoyaki. I decided on the misoyaki butterfish combination full course dinner. First came the iconic house made tofu noodles in ponzu sauce, really good. Then came a trey of 4 appetizers, tofu with torched miso, shrimp, gobo (maybe?), and natto between cucumber slices. They were ok, noting too special. Sashimi course came with a slice of ika (squid), hotatte (scallop), and 3 small slices of maguro (tuna) and sake (salmon). The plate was decorated very well and looked good but the sashimi was very sub par, I'd say probably previously frozen, Saku block tuna, it had a very strong iron taste to it and the texture was definitely previously frozen. The tempura course came next and it was excellent, very crispy and light. The dipping sauce was flavorful, but now that I think of it doesn't I usually come with grated daikon? Not a big deal I didn't miss it and it was tasty. My misoyaki butterfish came with konbu which was delicious and beni shoga (red pickled ginger) The butterfish was a large portion, well cooked and tender. I enjoyed it very much. The Chawanmushi (egg custard) was perfectly cooked. Very soft and jiggly. For dessert there was a small scoop of Daves green tea ice cream. For almost $60 I did wish the sashimi was better but the fact that everything came in courses and took more time. I understand there was a lot of dishes and service involved. I'd like to try the Unagi Kamameshi next time. If you look at the menu, the ala cart items are very expensive, especially the sushi. So I suggest you get some sort of combination that includes what you want. Come here if you want to be waited on and have multiple courses in a more traditional setting. It looks like the kamameshi, nabe, sukiyaki, and shabu shabu, courses have more elaborate presentations so I might suggest one of those dishes. Yoshitsune is located in the Park Shore Waikiki hotel, although the address is on Kalakaua ave, the entrance is on Kapahulu ave. Its best to park at the zoo closer to the beach is better, pay for 2 hours of parking should be more than enough. Its basically the closest hotel to the beach on Kapahulu. The restaurant looks small but there are multiple rooms and is actually pretty large so I'd meet my whole party outside before going in. Bathrooms are located on the second floor of the hotel and you need to get the RFID card from the restaurant to use it unless you're a hotel guest then your key card works.
