Where to Drink in Madison, Wisconsin | Eater Chicago

"The flip side to the straight-laced lagers found at Working Draft is Young Blood, just the kind of brewery you’d expect from the name. The beers are frequently overfruited kettle sours, the names are often bizarre in-jokes, and the taproom restaurant serves a house version of a beloved fast-food item, the Crunchwrap Supreme. The real trick, though, is that they’re worth it, even the crunchwrap. Young Blood’s high degree of quirk has translated to success in its original location, as well as a near-north side spinoff. And if you need a change of pace, the downtown spot has an affiliated cocktail bar upstairs — because there’s always more to drink." - Kyle Nabilcy

An inventive downtown brewery loved by regional critics for playful, fruit-forward sours and hop‑driven beers. A full kitchen and an always‑changing tap list make it an easy pre‑ or post‑Capitol stop.

Young Blood was by far my favorite stop while in Madison during our cross country road trip. Relaxing, inviting, and filled with interesting beers - Young Blood was a great way to end the night after a full day of driving.

First time coming here tonight. Great brewery with chill atmosphere and fantastic beer selection. Highly recommended! 🍺

Google
Good brewery with good food and even better drinks. If you like your beer/drinks fruity, sour and tart this is the company for you! Crazy names for crazy drink mixes and they all work beautifully. They also have a new line of cheap beers for the student market. Street parking is aviable only here and a few minutes walk from the capitol building. This original location has been a staple for us every time we come to Madison and is highly recommended!

Sometimes you find a diamond in the rough. Sometimes, it's just rough. We tried their sour beers at a wonderful pizza establishment and loved it so much we planned a whole day for the brewery. That was a mistake. The sour beer was still good, BUT THE FOOD IS BAD! You should definitely try their beer, but try it at a different bar. It will be the same price. We ended up getting the Jenga tots and they tasted worse than McDonald's fries. The atmosphere was beautiful, the service was great, but the food was so gross that I'll never be back and I would never recommend it. Please go for drinks, but get food somewhere else. I wish I had a better experience.

Google
Young Blood is a very popular brewery off the square in Madison. Very cool vibe with great indoor and outdoor seating. They have 12 taps of their beer and a limited menu. On my last stop they had a helles lager, hazy IPA, White IPA a kiwi sour, a crazy pineapple marshmallow gram cracker vanilla sour, West Coast lager, coffee milk stout, fruit punch sour, hazy pale, hazy triple, hazy double, and a watermelon sour. The service was super friendly on our stop. While the beer is not all my style I will definitely stop here again.

Google
Fantastic beer. The location is super convenient and well layed out. The patio is also very nice in the summer.

Google
Wow. You know how when you sample stuff at a brewery you usually find like one or two that you like? Okay. This place. Four samples: four absolute winners. The dry-hopped No Rules Northwoods IPA is full-bodied and refreshing. The Synergy is a dangerously sweet fruit punch. The Boone's Farm is a point-and-counterpoint exhibition of tangy and sweet. But the real triumph--a sour for the person who hates sours--is the Carly vs Taylor. It's a mystifyingly savory peach and cinnamon adventure. It's easy-drinking and crisp, but rich and beery. I don't know how to stop.

Aaron Floyd

Google
Very good beer, limited food menu. Beers are mainly IPAs or Sours. This is hands down our favorite brewery in town. Nice large outdoor seating area street side weather permitting. Love the music and general environment. We frequent often and love going back!

Yelp
Young Blood is one of my favourite breweries in Madison. I was not much of a sour ale fan, but this place changed my opinion completely. I now love trying new sours and I especially love their seasonal stouts. They've recently redone the food menu and my favourites so far are the crunch wraps and their mofo veggies. It's also a fun place to meet friends after work, as well a great place to do some work on the weekends. The ambiance has a homey feel and the service has always been impeccable. If you go on Tuesdays or Fridays, don't forget to say hi to Steve at the bar. He's a treasure trove of information on beer and is generally a fun person to talk to.

Yelp
I really enjoyed our experience at Young Blood in Madison! The service was great and our bartender was super hard working, attentive, and kind. The beer was very tasty and it was nice to see that they had food options. I would give all this a five star review. However, the food was inconsistent and prices were not just. That part was disappointing. The $17 barbacoa nachos was lacking barbacoa and sadly I did not even taste or see any meat. The poutine was good and the veggies tasty. I would go back for drinks next time and skip the food altogether and go to the other many options in the area. The service was the highlight of this visit!

Yelp
Wow! They had so many fun beers and names. It was heaven for me since so many were fruity sours. I got the unsupervised at target and it was a fruit punch sour - so good! Very fruity and just the right bit of tart. They also have some brat options - I didn't get one but people in my party said they were good! I did try some fries and those were good. The bartender seemed very annoyed when I asked for a sample of two sours, but obliged. Kind of weird thing to be off about, maybe it was just a grumpy kind of day but didn't ruin the experience. Wish this was closer to me!

Yelp
Fantastic beer. Nice bar tenders and a decent barbacoa crunch wrap. Chill vibes. Go here!

Yelp
I have had Young Blood beer on tap from the Memorial Union and so naturally had to check out one of their taprooms. We did several appetizers and I thought they were all very tasty! The barbacoa nachos had great flavor and the chips were delicious. The trashy but classy deviled eggs had a really nice savory flavor which was slightly different from regular old deviled eggs. I loved the fried veggies too! Beautiful location right near the square with a nice patio. The bartender was also helpful and polite.

Yelp
The sour beers here are really quite good. Some of the best I've had. Atmosphere is pretty cool and chill and on a Sunday morning I sat outside in the sun and enjoyed the cool morning mixed with the morning sun. Will definitely be a regular here whenever I come through Madison.

Yelp
We stopped in here as part of a mini brewery tour of Madison. And for being in the middle of the party district, it really has a much more peaceful feeling than many other places in the area. That might change later in a Friday or Saturday however. We didn't try any of the foots, but they do have a descent if slightly small menu to choose from. And it all looked and sounded good. Next time. The beers are excellent. Especially their sours. Like really good. Great flavors and sour enough to know you're drinking a sour. No joke, I don't like sours, but I liked these. And if you know me at all, that's saying something. My only irk was they don't do half pours. You have to get the full size beers. But, the bartender were more than happy to give us a sip of whatever we wanted to make sure we were happy with our choices. Very nice and we had no issues getting the full pours. If you want some great beer in a somewhat more laid back environment, this is your place!

Rachael E.

Yelp
Great selection of sour beers. I enjoyed everyone I tried and brought home "unsupervised at Target" which was a hit with my friends.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
Do you like sours??? This is your place!!! My friends and I all got awesome sours. I can't remember the names of them (they had some prettyyyy unique names) but you can't go wrong. The inside of this brewery is also very cute. Very dim and moody. I liked it, very different from the vibe of other breweries I've been to. We also ordered their jenga tater tots and...weren't that impressed. For the cost, we didn't get much food (and they really did stack the tots like jenga pieces LOL). I was hoping to get a bit more substance with that order, but oh well. One of our friends got one of their hot dogs and reported that they were good, so I'd probably recommending passing on the tots and going for the dogs.

Yelp
Young Blood is the reason I live near the capitol. As a recent Milwaukee transplant and major beer snob I knew I had to be walking distance from one of the best breweries in the state when I relocated. This is an amazing brewery with the coolest vibe and delish snacks. I'll leave specific beer rating to Untappd but know that they are all kick ass and the food is just as good- especially the crunch wrap! I also love the greenery they have brought in, making the space vibrant and homey even in the dead of winter.
google avatar

Noah L.

Yelp
This place has a great vibe -- plants and greenery and a modern industrial feel. It also has fantastic beer. I mean really top notch IPAs and sours. Super impressive with a rotating variety (all with dank names) and some cans as well. Great atmosphere, beer, crowded but not too crowded. Service is attentive and fast. I'll need to go back there to try their food.

Yelp
A brief search of local Madison breweries before my visit, looking for sour and fruity options on menus, brought me to Young Blood Beer. My friend (and chauffeur) who I was visiting was already planning on us spending some time in the downtown area, so Young Blood made it on to the list to visit on that particular day. To my utter sadness, they don't (or at least didn't at the time) offer flights. And ya gurl likes trying ALL THE THINGS. But I was pretty sure I was going to like the sours on the menu. And indeed I did! We sat at the bar for our couple of beers and enjoyed our brief visit. At the end there was some confusion about what options were available for carry out as there were two different menus floating around. That led to some disappointment for me and for the things I was looking forward to bringing home with me. It also felt like the bartender was annoyed with me/us as we were trying to figure out what was actually buy-able, but I was trying to make a decision based on the menu that was put in front of me. I really liked their sour beers, the space was pretty cool and inviting. They have a kitchen and a small menu, in case you get a little nibbly. I would certainly go back again. If nothing else, I'll keep an eye out for their offerings at local shops when I am passing through the area.

Yelp
Best beers in Wisconsin, possibly the US/world. The music and ambiance was right in my jam. Wish we could try the food, with Jenga Tots and barbacoa Crunch Raps, but we splurged on breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
I wish I could give this business 10 stars! If you love craft beers and trying new brews this place is for you. There's nothing better then sitting on the patio and sun bathing in the sun with one of these awesome beers. Young blood is always coming up with something new and the food is amazing. Due to most of the beers being brewed in small batches they can go fast. The nachos are by far my favorite and the Mexican crunch wrap. If you haven't been here I would give it a go. Plus they have some really unique merch which is always a bonus.
google avatar

Cherise K.

Yelp
100/10; the best beer spot in town. You want a beer - check. You want some munchies - check. You want to go downtown and vibe - check. I am ABOUT this place. I especially love all the names that they give their beers and the general names of all their foods. It's fun, it's funky, its punny, and it always makes me smile. If I am on that side of the square it is a no brainer where I'm headed. Truly a fantastic location, but I have to tell you, their sour beers are what sell it for me every time. Happy drinking, eating, and vibing!

Yelp
Walking through the doors of Young Blood is a beautiful experience. There's exposed brick walls, neon signs, and greenery surrounding you. The ambiance inside is absolutely amazing. The outdoor seating is also a great option! They have plenty of tables outside that have umbrellas in them for shade on a hot day. The beer names are all super fun. I had the ''Thursday is Email Day'' which was a wheat beer. The beers are pretty good but some of them taste a bit hoppy. If you like IPAs or hop flavors, you would love it! Personally, I'm not a huge fan of hops though. Despite that, most of the beers are pretty good. The food options are really unique. The street corn is super good! I've also had the jenga rated tots and beer nuts in the past. They put an interesting twist on all the food they make there. The service is always great! The workers are super friendly and and attentive to their guests. It definitely enhances the experience. I definitely recommend checking out Young Blood next time you're downtown!!

Yelp
I wrote my original review at three stars a year ago and feel an update is in order. Since my original review, YBB continued to grow and improve and it is now my go to place when I'm in the mood for a delicious and inventive beer. Without a doubt, they are churning out the most amazing sours I have ever tasted. They are consistently hitting the ball out of the park with their beer creations. Along with their beer, their food menu is perfect to nosh on when drinking. Their crunch wrap supreme is my fave. Staff is super super friendly and it really has become a second home. Run, don't walk, and try this place out.
google avatar

Brooke L.

Yelp
Love this brewery on King St! They also have a taproom on North Street if that's your jam. Friendly and inviting staff that really are passionate about their beer. Our fave beers: My body is all giggly (hazy IPA) and Jeepers Cripes Superstar (fruit punch sour). They have some food and snack options - including a Chicago style hot dog, tots, poutine, and their version of a crunch wrap supreme. Check this place out for a beer and a bit before a show at the Majestic!
google avatar

Danielle L.

Yelp
Love love love the Kiwi Punch Sour beer! The gentlemen behind the bar was great with recommending delish options. It was truly the best sour beer I've ever had!
google avatar

Barbara C. V.

Yelp
So I wanted a dark beer but they only had summer brews out. The bartender talked me through what else I might like. I ended up with a fruity sour. Wow!! Like a sour patch candy in a drink! It was great. Not the kind of thing I'd slam down but nice to sip while talking. We could sit out side outside by the street too which was fun,
google avatar

Yelp
1. Great ambiance - loved the feel of the inside even though it's currently setup to keep people sort from each other, there are plenty of spots to eat & drink. And the outside seating on King Street is wonderful and first come first serve for tables! All staff are wearing masks and hand sanitizer is available for everyone. 2. For food, we only shared the small order of the poutine this time - it was delicious! The gravy had such a great flavor and the curds were just melted enough We'll definitely try more of their food menu next time since they have a good selection of options! 3. The sour IPA I got was really tasty - I'm not a beer aficionado but I would definitely get it again! Plenty to choose from - but be aware they don't have any ciders for non-beer drinkers like my boyfriend (or any other alcohol as far as I know, but I'm not 100% on that). Looking forward to stopping by again soon!

Yelp
Young Blood is a wonderful addition to the downtown scene and has some incredible beers. Great vibes (and vines) in the interior and there is a nice patio with views of the Majestic Theater and the Capitol. It's hard to pick just one beer so get a flight and try as many of the great beers they have. Bonus points for the creative names, had a pint of (Ope Not Nope). The beer selection changes frequently and they lean towards IPAs and sours. These guys are brewing some amazing beer, go check them out!
google avatar

Elton W.

Yelp
I am so sad this place doesn't have national distribution. These are some of the best, most unique, fruity, and flavorful sours I have ever tasted. If you like sours, go here!

Kenna G.

Yelp
Beer is excellent. Great mix of IPAs and Sours. Vibe is fabulous. It's dark and moody. It's almost like an upscale brewery, but college students also would enjoy it here. Music is on point.
google avatar

Olivia H.

Yelp
If Young Blood Beer had a word cloud, the biggest words would probably be "plants" and "vibey". It's a good spot for meeting up with your hip young professional friends. I was happy to see they offered a good selection of beer types (read: not just IPAs), as well as hot food and snack options. Worth checking out if you're in the area.
google avatar

Jiyeon K.

Yelp
The nachos were yummy but it needed more queso and barbacoa. There were many tortilla chips that needed some love from the cheesy meaty goodness. Tortilla chips were thick and crunchy and can hold up all the toppings. The sandwich was delicious. Super crunchy yet moist chicken w yummy pimento cheese.
google avatar

Rayna S.

Yelp
Very nice brewery. I personally don't drink, however my fiancé and his parents love this spot. The bathroom where very clean. The decor was welcoming. Keep up the great work !
google avatar

Tammy T.

Yelp
I'm sorry to say it but I was not fan of the food. I'm giving them a 3 1/2 star because the bartender was super friendly and nice and helpful she recommended some great beers for me it was the beer I like the different name's if I do go back it would not be for the food
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
Youngblood has an eclectic selection of beer, including many sours! They have a trendy feel inside. A big perk aside from the beer is the outside patio and location. It's in the heart of downtown and there are a number of good restaurants surrounding it. I think this is one of the best downtown breweries for a small or large group
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
Wow wow wow. I don't like beer, but they've produced the first one I've ever liked. The "I'm Not Johnny Blowtorch" was sooooo good. Very fruity sour. Looks like they had many others I would be willing to try. Their food was also interesting and yummy! I had the veggies, another in my group had the crunch rap supreme, and another had the nachos. All got good reviews at the table. I'll be back if I'm ever in Madison.
google avatar

Sydney R.

Yelp
I am super impressed with this taproom! The atmosphere is super welcoming and as a plant lover myself, I am obsessed with the pathos that are dangling from the trellis. My fiancé and I had two brews before going to dinner and it was honestly hard not to buy more! The bartender was very helpful with suggestions on what to get and I loved both of the suggestions he made! You can tell that this is a local favorite because we went on a Monday night and the dining area was full. We hope to be back to try the food (it smelled amazing).
google avatar

Todd B.

Yelp
Great find. Took our daughter on her 8th birthday. Atmosphere is great, service was even better. Beer selection was limited, if you like sours this is your place. Would have preferred some darker beers on the menu. Nachos were a hit, deep fried veggies were excellent. Would not order the tots again.
google avatar

Carly S.

Yelp
We walked in and it was office themed which was already a great start! I only had one beer, a sour, and it was honestly delicious. The bartender was very friendly and struck up conversation easy with us.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy a wide variety of beers in a laid back atmosphere!! Define must stop if near the Capitol and wanting a beer.

Yelp
I have been a fan of Young Blood beers for awhile now and even run into one of the owners at local establishments from time to time.. Our first visit to the actual Young Blood building left me a little sad. It's October and yet they're quite heavy on the sours and IPA's. Maybe that's what you guys strive to be, but there's a season for IPAs, and there's a season for dark ambers, porters, and stouts. I think there was one or two non-pale ales/IPAs on the entire list, which is fine if you're a warm weather state, but Wisconsin is not, and beer styles need to change a bit with the seasons here. I will say that everything we drank was tasty, but I could've gone for a brown ale or a rich dark porter. If you want to stick to your guns and be IPA heavy, that's fine, but if I go into a beer bar in November, I'm going to be picking something other than IPAs, in general. Letdown #2.. when seated, the beer lists are kind of hard to read from a distance and your only way to see them without getting up is by scanning the QR code and getting the list on your phone, which is fine, but 1. Cell service sucks in their building and 2. The guest wifi was broken. When I told the bar manager, he kinda shrugged. Rebooting the access point may have been a quick fix. I do like that their merch is affordable and cool, and we bought a couple items while we were there. Still love Young Blood!
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Cool scene with good beer. Stopped by on a Saturday and the outside patio was hopping! We sat inside and enjoyed the spaced out tables with some beers. Many IPAs on tap but also a delicious stout as well as a few other choices. We enjoyed all of the beers. They also have a small food menu which is perfect for those tipsy munchies! Staff were friendly, we will be back.
google avatar

Prayash B.

Yelp
Perfect beer, perfect ambiance. Their beer keeps getting updated almost weekly I would guess, and its all soo good. My favorite is the NASA's 7th Scientist, which I would HIGHLY recommend. For starters, their Jenga Tots are really good. The hotdog is pretty nice too. All in all, a perfect place for an evening hangout.
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
My friend and I tried this place last weekend. I'm not much of a beer drinker but I really enjoyed the two I had. We didn't get here early enough to try the food so I will make a point to come back by 9pm. I liked the decor, music and the bartender was super nice! Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Tito r.

Yelp
Good beer varieties and a nice atmosphere. I tried a blueberry beer they brewed and it was delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Happy we stumbled across this place, Such great vibes, from the bartender, beer selection and music choice! Two of the things I love... Hope & Vines

Yelp
I visited Young Blood Beer after attending the Brew for Ukraine event at Wisconsin Brewing Company in Verona. I visit breweries for a hobby (or as a sign of an existential crisis). Parking around the establishment is tricky due to being so close to the Capital, but I found a parking garage right around the corner for $3. The establishment itself is clean and the decor is trendy with some strings of lights and neon. They do have a kitchen and serve some variety of food that lack a specific theme or unifying motif. I found out from the bartender that they do not serve flights, but I can have samples. I was provided two samples of my choosing & I would have been provided more had I asked. I was provided several free brewery stickers upon request, and my bartender had good humor and I felt acted to ensure I was cared for. They had a fair variety and I tried an American wheat and an ale. I liked the "Track Suit Curious" pale ale and ordered a pint. One thing of note is that the Wi-Fi is awful and the bartender warned me. I was unable to connect with my iPad & was disappointed. I would think that if you ask patrons to utilize a bar code to look up a menu, then you should equip them with Wi-Fi if they don't have a smartphone.

Pam S.

Yelp
Beers are awesome. Unique and rotating offerings. Great service and food is bangin! Have been here 4 times and always had a wow beer and a wow appetizer.

Kathy S.

Yelp
Fun stop and loved the craft beer choices. Bartenders are amazingly friendly. I will be back
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
This was our first visit and we were pleasantly surprised. The beer is great. Sours and IPAs were the dominant beer on the menu and not one disappointed. We had an order of poutine and Jenga tatters, both were excellent. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and the vibe was solid. We will be back!
google avatar

Dar P.

Yelp
Stunning atmosphere! Great service! I'm not a huge beer drinker but what I had was good. I can't leave a huge review on the beer not being a beer fan myself. Food on the other hand is what landed me posting a 3 star review. Crunch rap supreme had no crunch, and was extremely greasy, wilted lettuce, and the dipping sauce was bland. The Yakitori - completely flavorless and nothing but bland chicken on a stick. I will likely give it another shot on a different day.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
Great place to grab beers and a snack! The indoor vibe is great. Young kinda hipster feel. But the beer, is excellent. Incredible sours and ipas that stand up to the likes of Working Draft. I would say they are very comparable places with Young Blood being more sour focused and Working Draft being more ipas and lagers. The food at Young blood is fun and hip. It's a great place if you're feeling a little adventurous
google avatar

Erin N.

Yelp
Young Blood is one of my top 3 favorite breweries. Their beer is innovative and consistently delicious. Great location (half-block from the capital) and chill atmosphere. Food menu is simple, in a good way, and would be what I call 'elevated bar food'. I particularly enjoy their nachos. 10/10 highly recommend if you enjoy drinking great beer.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Cool place. The outside patio is great on a warm evening. Great beers. Wide variety and crazy names that I can't even recall. A lot of double IPAs which I enjoy. Great looking interior and you can see where the beer is brewed through the opening in the floor to the location below. All kinds of stainless steel brewing kettles. I will be back for sure.

Nate B.

Yelp
I'll give this 1 star because the place looks nice but to be honest we were never able to try the beer or food. On July 3rd we were meeting a couple friends here for a quick beer before getting dinner at another downtown location. We knew they closed at 7, our friends arrived at 640 and were served 2 beers. We arrived just as our friends were sitting down outside, we quickly entered the building and walked right to the bar. We were told they closed at 7, we said it's OK we only want a beer, this was at 645. We were then scolded by another man behind bar, seemed to possibly be the manager, that last call was at 630. We asked how our friends who arrived at 640 were served, he then got louder and ruder and again said they close at 7 and last call was at 630. We would never ask for special treatment to get served past closing time, but when our friends who arrived and were served past the 630 mark, and then we were rudly spoken to that was frustrating. We regularly patron the king st area. Do your self a favor and visit Settle Down, Oz by Oz, Lucille or many other of the wonderful dinning/drink spots in that area. All these have much better service. And to me that's what sets a places apart from others.

Taylor G.

Yelp
Best beer in Madison/the world. They have the most flavorful sours and a nice rotation of beers.
