"Though most seollongtang fans will rave about Han Bat, don’t sleep on Young Dong, a longtime Koreatown institution that serves the dish with a clearer broth as opposed to the milky, cloudy rendition served at most Korean restaurants. But the soup is still rich and flavorful and doesn’t skimp on beef. Make sure to pair each bite with the restaurant’s stellar kimchi that ties the meal together." - Matthew Kang

You walk in, and there is a sign in Korean as well as English underneath. A local to the restaurant said the number 3 was his favorite. He said everything was good but the beef bottom was for days he didn't want something as fatty. I ate the number 3 and my friend had the oxtail. The sauce with the jalapeños and garlic I poured in with 2 scoops of red pepper, 3 pieces of kimchi and 4 pinches of chives. The sauce brought the noodles , bone broth and beef into synergy without being very spicy (Surprisingly). The service was excellent and the food was great. They have their own parking too, which is awesome since you don't have to pay to park for once.

Google
Their Korean-style beef stew used to be delicious. I ordered Galbi-tang, but the beef had an unpleasant odor. I could not eat any of the beef. However, their Sulung-tang is still good.

Randy F.

Google
Casual, local sul lung tang specialist known for their clear broth. Good solid beef flavor. Nice cuts of beef. Kimchi is fine but I liked Han Bat’s kimchi more. Seating is indoor only. They have a private large parking lot. Credit cards are accepted.

Google
Nice soup and Korean food. Very nice and soup tastes meaty also which is good. Authentic. Staff needs to speak more English, but I could still communicate with them well. Repeat visit after first coming here. Craving for more Korean food, and this is much better in terms of serving size and quality than Han Bat a few streets down.

Google
This sullungtang joint is super local place with very good soup stock. Different than other sullongtang restaurants, their soup stock is not the heavy white soup type. If you prefer the light stock version with very good beef flavor, this is the place. Kim chi and pickled radishes are excellent. They have a free parking lot behind the store.

Google
I like clear seollungtang, which is why I came here. But, the restaurant didn’t appear too clean. And, their radish kimchi that I got the second time around tasted different. Lastly, the brisket in the soup tasted funny. I don’t think I’ll be returning.

Google
A place with a real taste and vibe of Seoul from the 80s and 90s. The meat soup is simmered to perfection, really deep in flavor. It brings back those nostalgic memories of Seoul citizens.

Google
It's Sulungtang with clear soup. Depending on the person who is familiar with the turbid soup, there may be likes and dislikes. But the Suyuk is quite delicious.

Yelp
The good: - parking - service (sweet Korean auntie!) - food comes out fast Hole in the wall vibes. I got #2 - beef stew no fat The food itself had a decent portion of meat, noodles, soup. For banchan it was kimchi, pickled jalapeños, rice. They also provide a green onion bucket and seasonings for you to customize your soup. All of the food was serviceable and my stomach left happy. It wasn't mind blowing, but I understand it's not meant to be. It's a healthy bone broth clear soup that's high protein and healthy. Unfortunately, I do think it's a little expensive for what I got.

Andrew L.

Yelp
Noodles were so good and the lady working was so nice! Try the Dumpling noodles - it's bomb!

Angela L.

Yelp
This place is my go to when I want soup. I love the beef stock and I add so much scallion and Kimchi juice in it. The meats always tender and comes with rice and a bunch of banchan. Our order always come out super fast and it's so filling. Every time we come to LA, we have to fit a meal at Young Dong!! FYI- there's a parking lot in the back!!!!

Sylvia K.

Yelp
Got the cold black soy bean noodles. It's hard to find this in the US but have seen it on YouTube. So finally got to try this. It was refreshing. Very strong soy bean taste mixed with black sesame. It's big portion. Noodle was chewy. I believe it's authentic but I have never tried it before so I wouldn't know!

Yelp
This place seemed very old school with food that's more towards comfort Korean food. They had a private parking lot so that was very nice to not find parking super far away and that the place was very easy to find. I got the spicy beef noodle soup which was very simple. The soup felt like I could make it at home or get it from the store. The broth didn't have a lot of depth but there was a lot of meat. The kimchi was very fresh and complimented the dish very well. It seemed like it would fit for someone who was wanting a hearty soup to get full.

Troy B.

Yelp
This is a hot take but I prefer clear sullungtang over the milky version, and I love Young Dong's iteration. Sullungtang runs at a steep cost these days but theirs really hits the spot. So much flavor and a good portion of meat in the soup. The kimchi here is some of the best I've had. It's nothing crazy, but pairs so well with the soup. This is one of those oldschool Ktown establishments and there is definitely a good reason why! A great spot to grab a quick meal but also a very solid takeout / pickup option for those cold nights where you just want soup and rice.

Vivian C.

Yelp
This store is known for their clear sul lung tang. It's like a cleaner version of pho and you can control how much salt you want to add. I thought it would be more like galbi tang since it was clear but to my surprise, it was very much still like a sul lung tang. Parking is a bit small but we got lucky and came when it wasn't busy.

Maggie Q.

Yelp
Simple, decent sul lung tang. Every place was packed on a Friday night, but this place had parking and no lines. Definitely recommend if you want a simple, no-fuss meal. 6 of us were seated immediately. I think because we weren't Korean, they asked us to write our # for our order down. This place seems to offer every part of beef except oxtail hehe. Broth is clear. The soups were ok. My friend made the mistake of getting the vegetable soup one, she didn't know it's legitimately a soup (no noodles, veggies were all bean sprouts). We had room to head out for dessert after.

Ellie W.

Yelp
They serve very reminiscent guk bap (breakfast stews). It's not the fanciest nor the mind blowing but it brings back memories. The sul lung tang (beef stew) doesn't have a lot of meat nor has the milky texture everybody is used. Their rice is very tasty but they give half the amount that would be sufficient for the stews. The service is very fast and they provide both cold and hot tea with a lot of green onion (absolutely love). The restaurant is very clean and they have different chojang (spicy sauce). Overall: It's good but not noteworthy. It is also a bit expensive compared to other guk bap restaurants. I would wait for 5 min but leave if I have to wait 10 min.

Doogie L.

Yelp
This place used to be really good, but they are cutting corners now. The experience of sullungtang is not just the beef soup, but the kimchi condiments that complement the experience. The sullungtang at Young Dong is still good. But it seems like they are no longer making the kimchis in house, and they now buy them from elsewhere (to me, it feels like Mainland Chinese import which is dirt cheap. Chinese imported kimchi has no greens). Would I still go back? I m not sure. It feels like after over 40 years of excellent food, the new management has now decided to maximize profits and cut costs while charging $20 for a bowl of sullungtang.

Yelp
I'm in the mood for soup Simply just because it's raining Funny, but when it's raining I'm in the mood for beef soup (sul lung tang) Sul lung tang is a beef soup with no fat. It looks plain and simple, but it just hits the spot! It's the tender beef, warm and comforting broth that you add white rice and a lot of green onion to. Then there are thin noodles that are just the perfect complement. But that's not all. There is a side sauce that you dip the beef in. It is salty, sweet, sour, and brings out the umami in the beef. Now, add some kimchi to every mouthful. Each spoonful of this goodness just makes you go 'ah~~~'. Side note, I appreciate the fact that there is plenty of parking in the back. The service is very quick, and they leave you alone. But when you ask for kimchi refill over and over, they gladly come by to bring you more.

ZM T.

Yelp
Very good for night when you Lee hungry and don't want to cook. This restaurant is known for soup in town.

Yelp
Came here on a rainy Wednesday around 6 pm. They have a spacious private parking lot behind the restaurant that you can access from right next to it. There was only one group there when we came but a few more parties came in after we ordered. The inside seems to not have been updated in at least the past decade and there are old photos on the walls. But they must be doing something right for people to be coming back! The woman taking orders and delivering all the food was very friendly. She got busier when more parties came in but still was looking at every table to make sure they had everything they needed. The menu seems to change occasionally. When we went, we got #2 beef with no fat stew, #5 ox foot stew, and #7 spicy beef with vegetables. Each was around $16-17. All come with radish and cabbage kimchi, pickled jalapeños, and 1 bowl of rice each. You can ask for more kimchi but more rice will cost $2/bowl. The #2 came out the most bland in terms of seasoning, however the broth was still meaty. It came with flat thin strips of beef and noodles. There was white/black pepper mix and green onions at the table that we added and of course we ate it with the kimchi as we did with all the stews. #5 was already seasoned with white pepper and had a stronger meat flavor. The ox bones inside were covered in collagen and a little meat. #7 was my favorite! It had the most seasoning and saltiness and was perfectly spicy. It had bean sprouts and green onions and the meat was shredded. There were 4 of us splitting the 3 meals since we weren't that hungry. We left satisfied but not full, probably would get my own stew next time (but still try everybody else's haha). Prices have gone up it seems but it makes sense for their location. I would maybe come back on a cold day or night and get the #7 again. I've never had anything like it before and was very happy with the experience.

Yelp
I grew up eating here ever since I was a wee little kid. This seollungtang is definitely different from your usual thick, cloudy broth soup like Hanbat. The soup here is clear but still hits on days when you're not feeling the best. I always get their flank beef soup especially cause I'm not a huge fan of the other meets in my soup. Food always comes out super quickly so you can count on the fast service. Parking here is easy as they have a lot in the back, no valet.

Ethan Z.

Yelp
My family of 4 came in on a cold Wednesday evening around dinner time.. there were only 2 other tables occupied so we were sat and attended to immediately. The ambience clearly isn't the restaurant's biggest priority.. but there is a good amount of indoor dining space and kept fairly clean! We were sat and given complimentary tea and cups for the table to share. As a spot that focuses on stew, it was very easy to order as their menu signage is visually large and displayed on the wall. We decided to order 3 stews as pictured in my post (menu seems to change). All 3 came out steamy!! The spicy stew was the most flavorful by far and my favorite of the 3. The other two had tasty broth but not nearly as strong of flavor. The meats were prepared well and I'd recommend using the kimchi, jalapeño sauce, salt, and green onions on the table to season your stew!! I think it makes all the difference. Side note: the kimchi is free with your order of stew!! The first servings of rice are also complimentary but small. The extra orders of rice are $2! Overall I think the service was quick, good, and fast! We had a great dinner experience.

Yelp
Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 I come here every weekend. It is one my favorite korean food and restaurant. I forgot to take a picture of my food. This place is really good and staff are always friendly and helpful. They have a free parking lot in the back. The food itself the most authentic sul lung tang(ox bone soup). The kimchi is really delicious. It is fresh, juicy and not overly spicy. Food is consistent and generous. Try them all. I highly recommended this place.

uriel

Yelp
I LOVE this restaurant! I have been going here since I was a baby and the food has never failed to disappoint. They have free parking and great kimchi and kkakdugi!

Samuel P.

Yelp
They will include extra 깍뚜기or 김치 if you're a regular. They have their own parking lot. There's a reason they're my favorite 설농탕 spot.

Jenny K.

Yelp
Omg so good! And not busy like sun nong dan down the streeey. Been coming here sounded college days and still as good as every water broth y good mess for a cold day

Katie T.

Yelp
Please do not go here, the service is very bad. The way they treat customers is very rude and disrespectful. I went with a large group and will never go there again. My group was shocked and we will be taking our business elsewhere.

Oscar David Z.

Yelp
This is a hidden mom and pops authentic Korean restaurant, have been there a couple of times and for sure it feels like a very good comfort food. We usually get the mixed beef dish (#9) and this delicious broth with noodles to accompany the meat. The place itself is nothing to brag about, just a regular clean place with pictures of the owner with famous Korean people on the walls, they do have parking though which is not that easy to find in KTown. The service is just ok. t's worth the regular service for the good food!

Duke C.

Yelp
We really like Young Dong for sullungtang cause of the cleaner less fatty tasting broth. The beef cheek is the go to for us thanks to the super tender meat that's just got a good amount of fat. The jalapeno soy dipping sauce is perfect as well, adding that extra bit of heat. I tend to go crazy with the kimchi juice they offer on the side to add additional flavor. Green onion, salt, and pepper are also on the side to be added to taste. Kimchi and daikon are also available. A lot of people complain about the lack of additional banchan but really, the soups and stews here are the stars. Although our most recent trip, both the daikon and the kimchi were abnormally sweet and fresh, which was a bit off. Hope it was just a one-off thing. Even during prime dining time, it's fairly quick to get a seat, which I love. Free parking! Amazing right?

Angel C.

Yelp
Quite different than the regular milky bone marrow soup I'm used to, but no less delicious. The cuts of meat in the soup are soooo tender and fantastic, and they're cut into bite sized pieces so u get loads of meat with each spoonful! The soup broth itself is very very good, not milky but still get that sullungtang flavor. I love how quaint it is in here too, not all the hustle and bustle of Han bat but still the same quality and taste!

Michelle C.

Yelp
Incredible comfort food. We were seeking something lighter and less smelly than pho, and Young Dong delivered and more. I think what we had was called "gukbap," which translates to soup with rice. We ordered the Beef With No Fat Stew, which is a type of gukbap. It's a beef-bone broth with skinny noodles and slices of beef, with rice on the side. You add salt, spice, green onion, and kimchi "juice" to the broth to your liking. After the slightest bit of salt it was terrific, and only got better/more rounded/umami as I added green onion and a splash of kimchi juice. Very clean yet flavorful! My dining partner explained that you eat the rice with soup and that some people even mix their rice directly into their soup. There is a sweet and spicy jalapeño dipping sauce for the beef that from what I understand is unique to this place. I was so distracted and engaged by my noodle soup that I didn't try the radishes and kimchi until halfway through our meal. Omg! We couldn't cut them fast enough thereafter. The flavors and fermentation were perfect; up there with the best. It was a delightful and warmly nourishing meal. Excellent!

Magaly J.

Yelp
At the time I had been commuting down Wilshire often and passing by this restaurant excited to stop by one day to try their food. When I finally made the decision to try it out, I had ordered the Beef Brisket Drop Flank Stew and Yong Dong's Special Beef Stew. The food served was cold. We waited for a while to get our food This restaurant is fine, but I will not return again.

Josephine P.

Yelp
Hard to find Korean restaurants that serve really good kimchi these days. This place is it. Of course, their clear broth style sulungtang is 10/10.

Julee Y.

Yelp
Amazing sullungtang! Came here after many years. Glad to see the taste has not changed. Restaurant has their own parking lot but there's also plenty of street parking. This is a hole in the wall mom and pop shop. Don't expect fancy decor or ambience. Restaurant is small with old walls and ceilings, bunch of photos on the wall of the owner and various Korean celebrities. Restaurant has been operating for years. Ordered the brisket (meat only) sullungtang. Put generous amount of scallions and chili powder in your soup (or ask for chili paste). They give you sides of rice, cabbage and radish kimchi. My favorite is the side of soy sauce pickled jalapeno. Broth is clean and heart warming.

Nikky J.

Yelp
I was really craving some soup and rice and this place was the answer to my craving!! The soup had great flavor & spice and the kimchi was slightly sweet and refreshing. Food came out quick and I enjoyed the tea as well. Please note I do have a higher spice tolerance than most so if you think Flaming Hot Cheetos are spicy get something more mild. I would definitely go back, so many more items I want to try on the menu.

V V.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 12 years - first with my grandma and my parents, and now with friends and my partner. It's a staple suhlungtang spot in Koreatown - the clear broth sister to hanbat's milky soup. Their version of the assorted suhlungtang is really clean tasting, extra meaty, and it's served with sweet kkakdugi (spicy fermented radish) and kimchi (spicy fermented Napa cabbage). They also include spicy soy sauce pickled jalapeños on the side to induce some sweat. Add some green onions, black pepper, and salt and you're good to go. If you want to be extra Korean, add kimchi juice from a kettle and ask for da-deh-gi - a spicy, umami paste, for extra flavor.

Sunnie K.

Yelp
It's was a bit cold windy rainy day, so it was perfect day for hot beef soup with kimchee & rice. It's nice that they have private parking not valet parking in the center of k-town, which is not common these days. The menu & side dishes is simple so the food comes out quickly. Soup had good amount of beef & clear broth not too greasy. It had a good beefy flavor. So taste little healthier. But the floor was sticky& service was so so.

Gabriel A.

Yelp
My aunt purchased 8 gift cards for this restaurant. I was able to redeem 4 of them on my first visit but when I came again to use the remaining gift cards, they would not honor the gift cards. There's no expiration date on them. Bad business. Just pocketed money. Beware.

Grace Y.

Yelp
Those who said this place is mediocre don't know what they're talking about. You gotta try at least 5-10 other Seolleongtang korean beef soup places to know this is one of the top ones. Plus comes with a tangy dipping sauce (soy / sugar/ vinegar based) with a tinge of spice from the sliced green jalapeño. Definitely a place to come back to. All the meat inside the Seolleongtang soup as well as the Mix Meat Plate was so soft and tender, each piece melts inside your mouth.

Gregg L.

Yelp
Very tasty food and very reasonable price. Quick service and a clean place! Check it out

Madeline K.

Yelp
I have been coming to this restaurant for over 15 years now and it is still my favorite sul lung tang place. I always get #3 and my family always gets #4. They have tasty meat and a delicious broth. BUT the absolute best thing about this restaurant is that their kimchi and radish kimchi is hands down the best kimchi I've ever had at any korean restaurant in LA! I come here frequently especially when I want some comfort food. I would give this place 6 stars if I could!

Daniel J.

Yelp
Not the worst, not the best. Feels more like side menu Seol-lung-tang than a main menu. Broth is the clean type. Kimchi and ggak-du-gi are less spicy, more sweet. I guess some like it that way, but I prefer the side dishes to contrast from the main dish more strongly. Then again, IMHO, none of the SLT places in K-town has perfect side dishes.

Lora H.

Yelp
My review is only for take out but if the take out was this good than I can only surmise that the food is just as good if not better eating in! If you have not tried Korean Sul Lung Tang or Seolleongtang or however you spell it in English - aka Korean clear beef bone broth soup, you don't know what you are missing. This is the ultimate comfort food, or better yet, if you're still in the days of partying it up - a perfect hangover soup. This place gives you a giant bowl of perfectly simmered beef broth with good amount of beef and nice Korean sides and condiments. It was so tasty! They also offer a side of pickled jalapeños and a soy/vinegar sauce if you want that added kick! Some Sul Lung Tang I've tried didn't have enough flavor but this place was great! Definitely a must try!

Paul L.

Yelp
Pronounced "Young Doe-ng" so don't try to get funny with the name. Since I got that out of the way, let's talk about food. I've been coming to this restaurant for almost 20 years. I'm a big fan of Seolleongtang, and it is one of my favorite go-to Korean food. I've tried many Seolleongtangs in Koreatown. While the original way to prepare this meal is to make the broth snowy white and milky, I prefer a cleaner taste. I especially enjoy ordering the No-Fat Seolleongtang - #2 on the menu (although it's more like reduced fat). As previously stated, the reason I love this place is that the broth has a clean taste. And of course, an excellent seolleongtang restaurant should pair with good kimchi and radish. With an unlimited serving of fresh chopped green onions, I get very greedy with the amount on top. This bowl is very hearty, and I always come out feeling satisfied. Tip: If you prefer you're broth with a little bit of kick, like Spicy Japanese ramen, per request, you can pour kimchi broth and "da dae ki" - a thick salted pepper paste.

June L.

Yelp
Was disappointed to see hanbat closed so ended up here... but I ended up liking this place more! The broth is not milky like hanbat and was clear. Still flavorful but it tasted much cleaner. The kimchi was the perfect pair! Highly recommend this place!

Sharon K.

Yelp
This sulungtang restaurant has been my childhood restaurant for quite a while now. If you're looking for a clean and refreshing broth, I would recommend coming here. I personally like coming here more than hanbat because their noodles that come inside the sulungtang is bomb and their kimchi/radish cubes (kaktoogee) is so much better than habats. I wish they had intestines in their "mixed" suluntang, but it's still good nonetheless~ If you're hungover or sick, order a hot steamy bowl of sulungtang and WAALLAAH, you will be cured. Trust me.

Anna L.

Yelp
Best clean beef broth in town! They give you so much meat and quality is immense. Their kimchi is also to die for!

Jen L.

Yelp
Came when it wasn't busy. There's parking where you turn to go to the back of the building, passing their gate and front entrance. Since I came by mid afternoon the service was fast! Seullungtang here has clear soup. Usually they are cloudy. Their soup taste like a mix of galbi tang and seullungtang. It has a very light flavor. It's okay. Their kimchi variant is good.

Kathleen W.

Yelp
The beef brisket bottom soup (sul lang tang) soup is my go to comfort food. This broth is super clean and the beef slices are tender and high grade. I normally get sul lang tang down the street where the broth is more milky and fatty but I'm really starting to enjoy this clean, healthier broth. I load my soup with lots of green onion and enjoy their bechu kimchi. Not really feeling their gak du gi.

Dino P.

Yelp
Classic spot for delicious handmade Korean noodles. So far every I've tried there has been great. Excellent service and peaceful ambiance.

Julia Kaitlin V.

Yelp
Been coming here for a few years because they really do have the best food! They are so friendly and our food always comes out so quick and fresh. I've had takeout from here too but just like everything else, it's much better to eat at the restaurant.

Uni C.

Yelp
We stopped at Young Dong Restaurant for lunch while in LA. As a Korean, I am proud to write a review of Young Dong Restaurant and glad that people really like to eat Korean traditional stew in the US. It's one of the most popular stews in Korea. Young Dong Restaurant has a typical Korean meal consists of a bowl of rice, a bowl of soup or stew, and some side dishes as accompaniments. The seolleongtang stew came out sizzling hot in stone pot dish that kept the entree boiling hot. The flavor of the soup was just right not too salty or too under seasoned. You can add some salt if you want to. We loved the soups! This has been by far the best seolleongtang soups. Also, It was fun to see photos of Korean celebrities in the restaurant. I would highly recommend visiting!

Chloe A.

Yelp
Holy wow, just wow...holy moly. As much as I hate covid, I enjoy how so many Korean restaurants that weren't available for delivery can now be found on Grubhub that deliver to my location. I would have never found a place like this otherwise since I have been doing delivery meals almost exclusively for a few years when I want to eat out and now it's one of my favorite spots for seolleongtang. As horrible as covid was and still is for many restaurants I hope many of these small businesses have been able to expand their customer base who are able to enjoy their food thanks to delivery. All that being said, their clear version of seolleongtang is incredible! It's VERY meaty tasting. No crazy herbs, spices, just a perfect bowl of meat broth. It completely warms your soul and melts it into a hot bowl of love. If love was edible this would be a universal bowl of love to bring world peace. It's pretty much the best bone broth soup you'll ever have in your life. Unlike the health food stores that charge you $20 for a little 4 oz of waterly "bone broth", this place is legit and gives you a giant bowl of it full of slices of perfectly cooked thin sliced meat with a bunch of Korean sides and condiments to go with. It's really a perfect meal and gives you a lot of nutrients. Bone broth is good for you and hydrates the body, it has slices of beef which is a complete protein, you have various types of kimchi so you get your veg, and a small side of rice (and noodles) for your carbs to fuel the body. Be sure to try their soy sauce pickled jalapeno, it's bomb! If you have never tried clear seolleongtang give this place a try. I think you'll be pleasantly in love.

Doreen M.

Yelp
This place was good, tho I prefer soon tofu type restaurants over this type of Korean soup places. I got the beef cheeks, and you have to flavor/spice your own soup as it comes super bland. I put in a lot of salt and the liquid from my pickles. They have a small parking lot. They have a tiny bathroom. It looks very mom and pop on inside.

Juan Carlos H.

Yelp
Another place that I feel I'll have to give a second chance to. Unfortunately, it was my first time there and while the service was good the food didn't impress me. Though, I admit perhaps I didn't know what to order. The soup that I got seemed to have all the necessary ingredients to impress me, however for me it lacked taste. My friend also ordered a soup but his seemed good. The service was good, very friendly server. I'll have to come back and see if a second visit changes my mind.
