"Pop music gets a bad rap. It’s “trite,” “cliched,” or “reductive,” according to people opposed to anything in the mainstream. But those people are wrong. From David Bowie to Carly Rae Jepsen, pop stars have always made music that is not just legitimately weird and surprisingly deep, but catchy enough that you’ll be singing it in the shower for the next 20 years. And doing all that is a lot harder than you’d think. If there’s any restaurant that reminds us of a pop song, it’s Yours Truly in Venice. This Abbot Kinney spot is eminently on-trend, from its menu full of buzzwords and brightly patterned benches, to the all-white interior and massive indoor plants we suspect were smuggled out of the Amazon. It even shares its name with Ariana Grande’s debut album. Yet, much like how you wouldn’t have assumed that a five-foot-tall pop star could hit the whistle register, you shouldn’t judge Yours Truly on appearances alone. Because after your first visit, you won’t be able to get this place out of your head. Let’s start with the menu. If anything, it reads like it was written by a New Los Angeles Restaurant Bot: Avocado hummus. Chicken liver mille crepe. Nashville Hot Shrimp. It may seem predictable, but the food definitely isn’t. The creamy and smooth avocado hummus is topped with a dollop of peanuts, a squeeze of lime, and salsa macha. That mille crepe does, in fact, look exactly like a tiramisu, but inside the buttery layers of rye crepe is surprisingly gamey (and excellent) chicken liver. photo credit: Jakob Layman And while just about any restaurant can take a protein and make it “Nashville-style” by breading it, frying it, and spicing it, Yours Truly’s huge Nashville Hot Shrimp might be the best iteration of the dish we’ve had in LA. The shrimp is fantastically hot, the milk bread underneath soaks up the spices perfectly, and it’s all cooled down by a cabbage slaw with pickle juice vinaigrette. None of it tastes as precious as it might seem when it arrives at your table (or shows up in your Instagram feed) because as nicely plated as it all is, the food is hearty, interesting, and flavorful. In fact, Yours Truly’s biggest missteps occur when they try to do too much. There’s a corn and crab chawanmushi (a savory tofu pudding) that’s egg-y and custardy the way chawanmushi should be, but the Dungeness crab is doused with XO sauce, and neither aspect adds much to the dish. And we love the ribeye on its own - it’s salty, fatty, and tender - but it’s served with blistered shishitos and a togarashi sauce that reminds us a bit of mayo, and just adds too much fat to a plate that already has a massive hunk of ribeye on it. Yours Truly could get by on the simple fact that it’s one of the nicest-looking restaurants in an area populated by tourists and Snapchat C-suites - just like how some pop stars skate by on Auto-Tune alone. But ultimately, Yours Truly distinguishes itself by taking risks and exceeding expectations. The next time we find ourselves humming “thank u, next,” we know it’s not going to be about this place. Food Rundown photo credit: Jakob Layman Avocado Hummus While you might ignore weird hummus mash-ups in the grocery store, you definitely shouldn’t ignore this. No matter how many times you come back here, this is how you should start every meal at Yours Truly. Eggplant This mashed eggplant is super flavorful, and, with the fermented muhammara on top, ideal for spreading on the sesame bread it comes with. photo credit: Jakob Layman Cacio E Pepe Potatoes Even though they’re served at dinner, we’d eat them for breakfast every day if we could, thanks to the egg, potatoes, and cheese. They’re another mash-up that we fully approve of. photo credit: Jakob Layman Hamachi No matter how you imagine this fish hitting the table when you order it, you’ll be wrong. It’s basically a make-your-own hamachi taco in a perilla leaf with mango sambal, avocado, and crispy shallots on top. We’d come back just for this dish and a glass of wine. photo credit: Jakob Layman Nashville Hot Shrimp We somehow missed the edict that any restaurant opening must have Nashville Hot something or other on the menu - chicken, quail, albatross (maybe). Nonetheless, this dish is huge, hot, and served with an addictive pickled slaw on the side. photo credit: Jakob Layman Carbonara Yours Truly takes a lot of risks - most of them (like the hamachi) work. Some don’t, and this is one of them. The salty uni, trout roe, and chipotle butter - all things we love - are too much of the same flavor, and overpower the squid ink shells. photo credit: Jakob Layman Banana Sundae A perfectly layered bowl filled with grilled banana, banana caramel, vanilla ice cream, and salty crust crumbles that taste like homemade graham crackers. Don’t think twice - order it." - Brett Keating

New restaurant on Abbott Kinney. We went on their first day doing brunch. Food was delicious, menu is very small and kinda not kid friendly. I hope they add some kid options. The avocado hummus was so rich and creamy. Tomato toast was my favorite!

Bright & happy atmosphere, very attentive staff & delicious food. The Chef prepared an off the menu Vegetarian entree for my daughter that she truly enjoyed. It was beautiful, had lots of spices & flavor. The Avocado Hummus & Fingerling potatoes were favorites of the table. I would happily order the Pork Chop again. We shared everything & it was the perfect amount for all of us. The Carrots with Xo & Burrata was good - but heavy on the salt & I love. The deserts sounded creative & decadent- but we were too full to try them.

This was honestly one of the best places we’ve eaten at in a VERY long time. Before I get into the food, I want to say that the feel of the place was really cool. A homey rustic yet modern feel. The staff were super friendly and informative. Whenever we asked questions, they had the answers. The guy helping us with our orders suggested we order everything at once because the kitchen is small. We thought 3 plates + dessert would be enough for two people. Towards the middle we felt like we wanted to order more but honestly, 3 was fine (unless you’re super hungry, then definitely more than 3 dishes). It’s a “share the dish” experience. So don’t expect to have a full meal with sides in one dish like most restaurants. So for the food, we started off with the scallops which were very nice and the sauce was very lemony and refreshing. It had thin apple slices which gave it excellent texture. The second dish was the octopus and THAT was the BEST I’ve ever had. We’re very particular when it comes to seafood, especially because we had great octopus in Mexico, but this was amazing. A bit spicy but also sweet with the strawberry sauce. Excellent. The last dish was a potato dish with Parmesan and egg yolk and I’m usually not a fan of egg yolk but it did add lots of flavor. Not my favorite dish but it was definitely really tasty. And of course the dessert. They offer only 3 desserts and they’re not on the menu. A chocolate dessert, lemon Kurd dessert and a banana dessert. We shared the banana dessert but next time we won’t share haha. It had a pastry crumble on the bottom then caramalized banana then banana chips then vanilla ice cream then marshmallow. Check out the pictures :)

This place is delicious! We wanted brunch but they only have lunch on weekdays. We ordered the crispy cauliflower (fantastic with a light batter and a side of anchovy sauce which paired amazingly ), cavatelli pasta, and mussels with fries. Highly recommend this place, i would love to check out other dishes!

A bit over priced for what you get and what you get is sort of all over the place. The bread was extremely over seasoned and brought me to tears when I accidentally inhaled them and started coughing like I had polio. The shrimp was excellent but then the steak was in a cup of mushroom oil.. my bowels starting singing with the first bit.. I really had high hopes for the restaurant but was disappointed. I would give it another shoot.. but at a lower expectation now.

Amazing food, ambiance and location. Loved everything we ordered. Make reservations since the place gets quite busy. They were nice enough to set a table for us outside because we walked in without one. Highly recommend.

Great dinner. Wonderful service. Love the music, eclectic throwback jams. We had: avacdo humus w/zatair flat bread (perfect flavors!), heirloom tomatos (with plums?! So good!); Dinner rolls with fresh butter (yum!); Good cocktails, Nashville Hot Shrimp (!! :) !!), porkchop(Asian-fusion w/sesame seeds); and for desseet: coconut macaroon! Solid, solid experience.

While menu is limited in comparison to places like Gjelina across the street, they do a great job with what is on the menu. The Gjusta Baguette was great and so was the shakshouka. The Avocado hummus was special and a must try. The Burrata toast and the smoked salmon is good as well. Coffee was excellent as well.
