"Want to get a little weird and eclectic with modern Japanese inspired food? Good news, because just like Adam, Blake, and 'Ders from Workaholics that’s what we're about to do. Enter, Yusho, brainchild of Mattheis Merges, the guy who spent over 14 years running Charlie Trotter’s entire operation. NBD but KBD. He’s not in the kitchen these days, but Yusho is still going strong. Yusho's thing is Japanese style cooking, but they incorporate different flavors and ingredients from around the world. There are two different routes you can go here. One is to get ramen for yourself at around $16, but you'll miss the better experience if you do. Instead, come with a few others and the intention of sharing a mix of everything, because that's where the most interesting dishes are hiding. Snacks + sides, skewers, steam buns, noodles, and fish + meat - you're going to need a bit of it all. Dishes like bucatini with spicy cod roe and fried chicken steam buns incorporate the best of Japanese style and different regional cuisines. Not everything works though, and some flavors, like the catfish steam bun, can be a bit confusing and miss the mark. But like a young Madonna, you’ll respect the f*ck out of the fact Yusho takes risks and pushes boundaries all of the time. If you go the route we suggest, the whole experience will be a bit different and fun. That includes the very particularly decorated room with its light fixtures, artwork, and tchotchke's that make Yusho a comfortable but interesting space. The personal sake they make is quite unique too. Get some of that to ensure things get weird. Food Rundown Sunday Noodle Bar On Sunday's, Yusho does a special noodle menu including noodles, dessert, and a drink for $25. Don't feel the need to get sucked into it. As mentioned, Yusho is more interesting if you experience the whole menu. Brussels Sprouts They are served in a heavy "Chinese sausage vinaigrette." The brussels sprouts are grilled well and the sauce has good flavor, but the sauce is too heavy for us. We’d prefer a lighter dressing. Chicken Wings A creamy garlic miso sauce over some real looking chicken wings. Great to start. Wagyu Beef In general, the skewers are all excellent, but on this smaller side. If available, our favorite is the wagyu beef skewer over mushroom rice-sotto. Lamb Tskune Solid lamb skewer accompanied by charred shishito and szechuan peppers. Japanese BBQ Pork Another skewer of fatty barbecued pork over a kewpie mayo potato salad. The pork is fatty and delicious and the kewpie mayo potato salad is like a mashed potato/potato salad hybrid. Tempura Catfish Steam Bun I love catfish. I love steamed buns. I don't love this catfish steamed bun. Something about the combination of fried catfish, yuzu aioli, candied sesame, and jalapeno doesn't work. SHROOmen Mushroom based ramen with roasted mushroom, pickled plums, tofu, and a poached egg. Heavy mushroom flavor and a solid ramen. Mentaiko Carbonara Low-key our favorite dish on the menu - bucatini noodles with hen egg and spicy cod row. The thick noodles become creamy once you mix in the egg, and the spicy cod roe creates an excellent flavor and spicy kick. Grilled Octopus The octopus is way too salty for us, and ultimately we can't get over that fact. Fried Chicken Steam Bun A little fried chicken in a steam bun never hurt anyone. 2X Fried Chicken Don't want to pay $7 for a little bit of fried chicken in a steam bun? Get either the half or whole twice fried chicken entrée instead. Either version of substantial. Soft Serve Ice Cream Jackfruit flavored ice cream with a roasted banana puree and matcha, which is finely ground green tea powder, sprinkled over the top. It's refreshing and delicious without being too heavy, so will satisfy a sweet tooth if you need." - Sam Faye

Great drinks but food was just ok! The fried oyster bun was the best thing we tried. We also had two different kinds of ramen and they were both disappointing, not horrible but not great.

Lovely place. I love the trout. Now I want to go back and try all the other dishes too!

I came alone last night and had a great experience sitting at the bar. Ordered the daily cocktail with the pig/chicken/salmon skins right off. For a lightweight like me, the cocktail alone nearly pushed me across the fine line between buzzed and tipsy, but I recovered as the meal progressed. I ordered the spicy tofu bun next, and it was essentially like a dumpling taco. The tofu was rich and creamy with a ricotta cheese-like texture. Loved it. For the main course, I had a half portion of the oft-raved about fried chicken. The sauce was sweet with a subtle spiciness that takes a while to bite. The texture and breading on the chicken was great, and I do not feel that I was let down by this dish. I would wholeheartedly recommend coming here for the chicken alone. To finish I had the 5-spice chocolate soft serve ice cream, which was better than I expected. The raspberry sauce complemented the spices in the ice cream quite nicely. The flavors they offer change seasonally, so don't be too disappointed if they have something different when you come here. Ended up spending $50+ by myself, but so worth it. I'll bring some friends next time and really delve into the bar offerings.

The restaurant itself has a great vibe and the staff were amazing. Everyone was extremely nice and accommodating. We were craving ramen again and decided to check this place out. I will say it wasn't the best I have had in the city (a little too much salt) but it was still very tasty. The chicken skins and 2x fried chicken was also pretty good. Definitely go with friends who are willing to share so you can try a ton of different things. The koyo front cocktail was also really good. We tried this Spanish wine my friend had heard about and the description of it being "funky" could not be more spot on but it was worth trying. Overall, we had a great meal and I would go back to possibly try the Sunday Noodles special.

The decor here is great, and the food matches. Not you average Japanese place, but not just "fusion", either. While the vegetarian options are a bit limited, there are enough to keep you full. I really enjoyed the maitake mushrooms. The cocktails here are good as well to make for a really enjoyable experience.

Recommend the various interesting skewers and sake guava cocktails! Lychee ice cream and the Tokyo Black beer is also a bitter sweet tasty combination worth trying out. Would love to try the ramen next time! The waitress was spread too thin when we were there, so we had to wait in turn to get her attention. Hire more people!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago right now. The food is season very well and that is one of the ways that I rate a restaurant. If your going to take hours to prep something and not season it properly, why bother making the food at all. the atmosphere of the restaurant is nice as well, with and open kitchen next to the bar you get to see all the chefs work, which is great, plus they are all really friendly. Chef Merges knows his way around a kitchen, I have been here several times now and the food just keeps getting better. Not to mention that the drinks they make are delicious. I like my G&T (gin and tonics) and the house made tonic water makes the drink very smooth. The sweat breads and foie are always a must when going here, also the skin platter consisting of pork, chicken, and salmon skins are crisped to perfection. This is a great place for several friends to hang out for a couple of hours and just drink and eat until your heart is content.
