10 Spicy Portland Dishes That Deliver the Heat - Eater Portland

"Like many Thai restaurants in this Thai-loaded town, Zaap offers a range of spice levels for its assortment of curries, stir-fries, and noodle dishes. The range at Zaap, which serves Northeastern Thai cuisine, starts at 1 and tops out at 5. The Evil Jungle Recipe stir fry combines veggies and a house red curry, along with basil and cooling coconut milk, to make the spiciest vegetarian dish on this list. Order the dish at a five for takeout or in-house delivery." - Ron Scott

Where to Find Standout Vegan Curries in Portland | Eater Portland

"MLK restaurant Zaap specializes in Issan cuisine — which has Laotian and Cambodian influences — from the northeastern region of Thailand. Among the meatless dishes, vegans will find a number of aromatic, coconut-rich curries, like the sweet mango yellow curry and fiery avocado green curry. Available for takeout and delivery, the curries arrive filled with fried tofu, kabocha squash, bell peppers, carrots, and sweet basil." - Waz Wu

Google
This is definitely a spot I’ll be returning to! I ordered the chicken pad thai, kra pao moo krob, and a pink Thai tea, and everything was delicious. The kra pao moo krob really stood out! It was an incredibly flavorful fried rice dish with crispy pork belly that had just the right amount of char and crunch. The Thai basil and chili peppers added a ton of bold, aromatic flavor and brought the whole dish to life. Easily one of the best fried rice I’ve had! The chicken pad thai was also unique in its flavor—more savory and tangy than sweet, which I actually really enjoyed and is refreshing compared to other pad thais I've had! The pink Thai tea was tasty and refreshing, a nice way to cool off between bites. We ordered everything at a level 4 spice, which was definitely spicy but still allowed the flavors to shine through. It hit that ideal balance between heat and taste without being overwhelming.

We arrived for weekend lunch and there was plenty of seating. We got the Thai iced tea, Pad see ew and Pad kee mai and enjoyed all our dishes. Service was quick and friendly!

Google
One of a handfull of Thai restaurants in Portland, Zaap is a great choice to eat. We ordered the pad tai, chicken penang, and khao pad. Be sure to include a Thai tea to complete the array of flavors.

If you want to dine in a warm, cozy restaurant with authentic dishes. This place is by far the best Thai food I've tasted out here in Portland!

Late post Had been here on labor day weekend. Totally loved this place. Worth every penny. Awesome food, ambience and the service. We ordered crab rangoon, tom yum soup, mango curry and thai fried rice. Everything was 10/10. Definitely a stop by if you are in Portland and if you are craving some delicious Thai food.

Google
Food food food! The pad thai was out of this world. BEST PAD THAI I HAVE EVER HAD! Fried rice and curry were amazing. We ordered 2 out of 10 spice, and it was perfect. The food was the most well spiced food we have had in a long time. PERFECTION 👌

Google
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland and some of the best Thai food I have ever had! I have been there 4 times and each time I’ve been blown away by the food and service. I recently got the Khao Soi to go and it was just as fresh and delicious as eating it there! I would highly recommend it! 3 out of 5 spice level is still spicy but very enjoyable!

Google
Great server, great food, great vibes. We somehow had Thai three times this week and this was def the best - not the best of all time, but amazing for the price. Loved it, would rec - we had three dishes, no complaints.

Yelp
The restaurant is well decorated and very enjoyable to dine in. Everything we ordered was absolutely on point and very authentic. All our dishes were made Vegan - Most of the menu can be made Vegan with multiple plant based proteins. The Hawaiian Fried Rice with Tempeh was unique and delicious. The salad rolls were fresh and the papaya salad was tropical and also different yet something we finished in minutes. My absolute favorite is the Pad Kee Mao. Easily one of the best Pad Kee Maos I've had, and this city has a lot of good options. Very authentic aroma and taste, well cooked noodles and a decent amount of veggies/tofu. Note: the food is spicy!! We kept everything a 2/5 and it tasted like a medium besides the papaya salad which was still spicy, so something to consider. I can't imagine getting a 4 or 5/5 on spice, lord have mercy. Price wise, everything is reasonable for the quality taste and quantity that you get. Even the service was great, with the owner (I think) chatting with the tables and checking in often as well. If you haven't gone yet you definitely should, it's worth it!

Yelp
Delicious spot. Soft seating and relatively fast service. I ordered a tofu pad Thai. Where I first was really inyroecied to pad Thai was a place in Michigan and it set the standard for memmost places in the west especially use a sweet tarty paste. In the east I find they use a more fishy flavor. Anyway this place seems be be a moderate balance of both. Which is quite delightful. I was very pleased with the right balance. Sufficiently large enough portion size where you don't eat so much that your bloated and not small enough that you feel you want more.

Yelp
Delicious! The tom yum flavored fried rice with pork belly had such great flavor... haven't had anything like it before. Hawaiian fried rice with tempeh was also very tasty and different. And lastly had a stir fried duck dish which hit the spot as well! Unfortunately forgot to take pictures as we were too excited to start eating

Yelp
Yum some of the best Pad Se Ew I've had outside of Thailand in years. I had the pleasure of visiting on a chilly day and I indulged in some Tom Kha before ordering noodles. I must have said Pad Kee Mao on accident or have been misheard but out came the wrong dish. The server was super nice about it and encouraged me to take the incorrect dish home for roommates. I'm visiting, so I didn't have a roommates or a place to store the food so I gave it to a houseless person near my hotel to keep passing on the good will. The food o had at Zaap was all delicious and I only wish I hadn't eaten it so fast to enjoy it more :)

Yelp
This place is a very cute hole in the wall. The service is always very fast. We started with Thai Dumplings and Fried Chicken Wings. Both were good. We had Pad Kee Mao level 3 and it was still pretty spicy and we had Larb at level 4 it was perfect.

Yelp
The food lives up to the restaurant's name Zaap, which means delicious!! The food was fresh and the curry was velvety. The spices invite you to keep taking another bite. Brother and sister running it are sweet and friendly. Enjoyable meal.

Yelp
One of my favorite Thai spots, great curries, very flavorful and rich. My go to is usually the Duck Curry, which a lot of places don't always have. Served in a green curry with assorted veggies and grape tomatoes which give a nice pop and juicyness, tho last time I wish there was more duck and less grape tomatoes. The interior is pretty small and cozy with just a few tables and little bar. Not good for groups at least without calling ahead so they can rearrange tables for you. The guy there is really cool too.

Yelp
Went into this restaurant close to closing time not knowing what we were walking into. It was a last minute tired of driving around the area looking for a parking spot time of evening. Boy were we surprised. From entering the restaurant the staff was polite, friendly, and inviting. The place looked clean and fun. Menu gave plenty of options for different tastes. The food was delicious. We ordered the crab fried rice and honey garlic chicken which came with a side of rice. Everything was perfect. The crab fried rice had a light sweet flavor that left you wanting to keep eating. The honey garlic pork wasn't overpowering. Just delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Good prices, portions and service. Always quick and they never mess up our orders. Glad to live near Zaap!

Yelp
Another Thai restaurant for Portlandia. Gripe ~ nice dining spot for the walking neighborhood but where do other folks park around here? You will most likely park a few blocks off MLK and feel like a local walking over. Entering in, a lot of red brown fabrix decor. Solo staffman running FOH and telephone, ringing off the hook. Piled counter of delivery orders ready to go. Ordered 2 star spice level and it was still too spicy. Fried tofu was too tough. Honey Garlic Pork was tender but not enough honey or garlic. The guy tried his best with every table filled. Lady apologizing for long wait times. This place is not quick as a Zaap and expect a simple Thai dinner to be longer than usual.

Yelp
The food prepared by Zaap Thai is authentic Northern Thai cuisine, and a welcome treat. Their service is fast and prices are fair. I think they have the best Khao Soi in town. If i closes my eyes, I would think I'm in Chiang Mai, which has a great cuisine. Thank you for being in Portland.

Yelp
I live right by this place and somehow have never tried it til now! Wow! Reviews don't lie this place is amazing! Called in a phone order for pickup and it was ready within 20 min just as promised. Food was piping hot when we ate and super tasty. I couldn't believe the total price either, what a great deal! Ordered the yellow curry with chicken, beef pad see ew, chicken pad Thai, and eggplant tofu. Everything was so flavorful and I cannot wait to come back and actually dine in!
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was absolutely delicious! And very fast service. Highly recommended to anyone who loves Thai! Our favorite was the Enoki Mushroom salad, a must try.
google avatar

Obed G.

Yelp
Just beware that the prices on the menu aren't correct so can be very misleading at the end when paying. Otherwise service was whatever. Food was great!

Yelp
I had Yum Woonsen with tofu for appetizer which was gigantic. It was very flavorful, but I think since it was soo flavorful, it overpowered the pad kee mao I had. So the pad kee mao was not as flavorful. But both were gigantic dishes. I did not finish it unfortunately. It's better if you come here and share. My one complaint is that the vegetables were poorly cut/chopped. They're big and not very appetizing. The peanuts weren't chopped so they're scattered throughout the dish and unable to incorporate with the rest of the yum woonsen. The mints and basils were not fresh as they're overly bruised. The restaurant needs a little cleaning. The table was a bit sticky. Overall 3.5/5.

Yelp
We dined in, food was good but not exceptional. We ordered: Thai dumplings, pumpkin curry with beef and bowl of Tom yum soup with chicken. The dumplings were pretty good, I didn't taste much crab but it was still good when dipped in the sweet soy sauce. Tom yum soup had good flavors but a bit too salty, chicken was too chewy. Although a tad salty, The best dish was the kombocha curry, great hearty flavors, pumpkin cooked perfectly. I would come here again to try more dishes.

Yelp
I wish i would have found this place earlier. They have been open since 2019 and i always saw the place while driving by but i just ignored it. Finally came here with another group of friends and was very happy with the quality of all the food (tried 4 different things). The only thing that was not that great was the crab fried rice but then fried rice is not my favorite. The family that owns this place and works tables, kitchen and bar are very nice and helpful. Now the best part for me was that the prices seemed low compared to other places. I realize everything is going up and i am not talking rock bottom prices just a buck or two less then what I was expecting. We will be back for sure.

Yelp
I cannot say enough positive things about Zaap. Thai food in Portland in general is just soooo freakin good. On a recent trip, I knew I HAD to eat a Thai meal at least once so I asked my Portland friends for their recommendations. Zaap came up and the Yelp reviews were fantastic so I decided to stop by for lunch. We came during an off hour (2pm on a Saturday) and the restuarant was fairly empty. We were able to order quickly and our food came out to us quickly as well. Let me emphasize: ZAAP IS DELICIOUS. Everything we had was fantastic. This is one of my favorite restaurants to get Thai food in the PNW. Here's what we ordered (but I'm sure everything on their menu is great) -- Spicy Eggplant with tofu: not too spicy. Fantastic cook on the eggplant! Perfect with rice. -- Pad "Se-Ew": sweet soy flavored wide rice noodle. Really good as well. -- Khao Soi: this was recommended by the server. It's basically a curry soup with egg noodles. It's not the BEST Khao Soi I've ever had, too many crunchies and not enough soup. But it was very flavorful and I don't regret ordering it (but I will probably opt for something else next time) The service was attentive and efficient. Everyone was welcoming and friendly :)

Yelp
The service was good. I enjoyed the decor. I would have given it 5 stars but the peanut sauce became watery because the spinach wasn't drained well.
google avatar

Suhasini G.

Yelp
Though we live bit far from this restaurant, we go back to this area where my partner used to live coz it's so delicious! I love the ambiance too, as it's cozy and unpretentious. The server is friendly and nice. These summer rolls are our staple every time we go and the peanut sauce with it, is so fabulous! We also got Avocado green curry and Tom Yum Noodle soup, which were both great. Between the two though I liked the Tom Yum noodle soup slightly more.
google avatar

Tori M.

Yelp
Yum! Found this place on Yelp and did not disappoint. We had an assortment of the curry dishes and they were all fantastic. The Hawaiian fried rice with chicken was my personal favorite.
google avatar

Mitsu H.

Yelp
Superb Thai food in Portland. Flavor, presentation, and they also have many more dishes than the usual ones you're used to seeing in Thai restaurants in the US. All around excellent.
google avatar

Barbara D.

Yelp
This place has a family run feel. The food meets Portland standards which are serious about Thai food. I liked coming here even though it was carry out.
google avatar

Stanley S.

Yelp
Walk didn't Evan take 20 tell I ordered my food it was already done she says it would on took 5 to 10 minutes and I didn't believe anyways over the food was great
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
Most of the foods even the soup was on the sweet side and no wow factor. My group of 4 ordered at least 2 dishes each, shared everything, and went home with leftovers but i felt no excitement to return to them. Service was wonderful and the restaurant had an overall pleasant vibe and appearance. Not fancy just nice.

Yelp
An absolute gem of a place. The staff here is amazing and the food is top notch. Great to go, but do yourself a favor and dine in.

Yelp
Was excited to try this place after reading the reviews. Live in Beaverton and don't know the area very well. Planned out an entire birthday celebration with lunch here in the middle of other plans. Should up at noon on a Saturday and it wasn't open...good thing Eem(Thai bbq Restaurant) is right down the road. Would never even try coming back here. Hours are listed as it being open on Saturdays.

Henry B.

Yelp
Delicious food, and the service was great. Plates were large, but it was so good we ate everything. The fried rice was amazing. Always great to support restaurants with small business vibes.
google avatar

Kareem K.

Yelp
Believe all the 5 star reviews, this place is awesome. Got the fried eggplant, Thai dumplings, shrimp pad Kee mao (drunken noodles), and the pork belly from the special combo menu. Everything was incredibly flavorful, and had a great spice level. I only got medium spice, and admittedly it was still making my forehead sweaty. Then again I'm always sweaty. If you get anything extra spicy, I recommend you wear a bathing suit.

Christina M.

Yelp
The food is amazing! Super unique and bold flavors. The service is great and food comes out fast. The decor is also very lovely. Plus there is a parking lot in back

Yelp
Bomb asf. Eat here, everything is amazing. The restaurant is clean and the host is kind, what more could you ask for?

Yelp
My favorite Thai in Portland so far. We got 5 different dishes for 3 of us and were very full but very content. We had a lemongrass fried rice special that is the single best Thai dish I think I've ever had. If they have it, highly recommend. It was also once of the spicier things I had though so if you are more of a 2-3/5 spice person, I would recommend eating it last so you can taste your other food! We also real liked the mango curry. We were the only one eating there the day we went (the owner did warn us their AC was broken on a 105 degree day and while we were not deterred everyone else was getting take out) and so we talked to the owner for a bit and he was very nice and gave us many other great restaurant recommendations. Highly recommend.

Yelp
great food with amazing coffee. also great vegan options. No complain. would come back if i'm around the area

Adrianna R.

Yelp
I want to try everything on the menu, it was perfect. The guy working there was really nice to my friends and I. If there was a location in beaverton/Tigard I would go all the time. Its a colorful, decorative place to eat
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful restaurant that has a/c. The food is so good. The service is warm and helpful. I was not expecting this place to be so good. The portions are hearty. This is now my favorite Thai place.
google avatar

Megan T.

Yelp
Visited on a whim for an early solo dinner and loved every minute of it! I was the only one dining in at the time but LOTS of folks were coming in and out for takeout orders, which just goes to show how popular this spot is. The staff was very welcoming and friendly, even making some comfortable small talk while I was there. The chicken satay and tofu pad kee mao were both INCREDIBLE and totally hit the spot!!

Ole L.

Yelp
Delicious food and great customer service. The restaurant is clean and well kept. We enjoyed three dishes and all three were great. Parking is in the back of the restaurant, so check there first otherwise that could be the trickiest part. Thanks for the great meal!
google avatar

Yelp
We're visiting Oregon and found this gem for our late lunch. They were able to accomodate our large group-16 total. Our order was taken quickly and our food came out almost together and quickly. The food is very good! The owner is nice and friendly. A must place to visit if you're around the area. Thank you guys! And keep it up.
google avatar

Yelp
ZAAP Thai is not fully vegan but the options are incredible. If you tell them "vegan" they'd be able to make a lot of what they have vegan including their Thai coffee and Thai tea. As far as protein options, they have soy chicken, soy beef, and tofu. Such nice people and never had a bad experience in the probably 20+ times we've been there in 3ish years. We are regulars for sure. I'm so glad they survived the pandemic. Our favorites are the Enoki Mushroom salad, Tom Kha soup, Pad Se-Ew, Orange Soy Chicken, and of course the Thai Coffee. We also had the Panang curry last night which was delicious and our server let us know that by default all of their curry bases are vegan and that they DO NOT use fish sauce in them I also would like to mention that they are quite affordable. Last night we got the large Tom Kha soup, Enoki mushroom salad, Panang curry served with rice, side of rice and veggies for the kids, the fried tofu, and two Thai coffees for $51. I don't think this place is talked about enough l, especially among the vegan communities, but I have recently been making sure that changes. Delicious food and friendly staff, can't ask for more.

Yelp
I've ordered takeout from Zaap quite a few times, and would definitely put them down as one of the better Thai restaurants in town. The menu is pretty exhaustive, and mostly the Thai standard dishes you see anywhere. They do a nice job with almost everything I've tried though, from the curries, to the noodles to the stir fries. Extra credit for the website which looks great and is easy to read. If you're eating at the restaurant, the interior/ambiance is just ok. Feels clean enough and they did what they can with the space. My only real complaint is that they seem to mostly do takeout, and almost everything is packaged in plastic. I know there's not really a better option for the curries, but really wish they'd switch to a natural fiber/compostable clamshell for all the other dishes. I have a hard time ordering takeout from here because of all the single-use plastic waste (let's be honest, America's recycling isn't always recycled) that's provided.

Rob W.

Yelp
Wonderful food. Kind staff. Quaint and clean. Fair pricing for the meal. Highly recommend:-)
google avatar

Jill N.

Yelp
It was soooo good we had to go back 3 times! I give them a 9 out of 5. Learned it's a family affair with sister in kitchen and brother doing just about everything else. Best Thai I have had in Portland, and that's a lot. Super duper!
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
Food was ready on time and hot. Reasonably priced. Would have liked more vegetables and sauce but flavor was good. Would go back again.
google avatar

Charlene W.

Yelp
Amazing food! We met some friends here for dinner and ordered a large portion of the menu. We enjoyed everything. Great service too.
google avatar

Luis S.

Yelp
I always love coming to this place, food is simply awesome , the service is very friendly and the environment is very lovely, Parking is available at the backside of the restaurant

Mila C.

Yelp
Delicious food and great atmosphere. Had the duck curry and musmun curry, both spectacular

Cindy M.

Yelp
We enjoyed a great dinner at this restaurant. We always share entrees and still ended up with leftovers. We had the Papaya salad, Chicken Satay, and the Crab Fried Rice. All were good and I would say the Crab Rice was really excellent. I could have just made a meal on that. Highly recommend checking out this jewel on MLK BLVD! On top of that our waiter was diligent and friendly, checking back to make sure the food wasn't too hot, as my tolerance level is low I do not tho k you will be disappointed at this Thai Res!

Kristen M.

Yelp
Upon looking for a place open Christmas Eve on our route to a friends house, we found Zaap. We are so glad we did! This will be our new go-to for Thai. We ordered some extra dishes just to try and loved each and every one. The curry was a bit spicier than we asked for but that's hard to estimate/tame. Service was pleasant, quick and efficient. For being directly on a busy street, the feel inside is warm and cozy. Jasmine tea was a delight! Can't wait to come back.

Andrea S.

Yelp
The best family run restaurant in Portland! Delicious unique flavors and textures. We ordered the noodle Tom yum soup, Thai dumplings, and pumpkin curry. It was all so good!
google avatar

Omar R.

Yelp
Love this place! Best Thai restaurant in all of Portland. The staff is accommodating and very comforting. I genuinely felt as if I was at my mothers restaurant (if she had one haha). Food tastes fresh. 5 stars is an understatement.
