Zachary’s Chicago Pizza - Review - Rockridge - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"You don’t have to be a Chicago-style pizza expert to know that Zachary’s is great. This East Bay institution has been making Chicago-inspired pies (it’s actually stuffed, not deep dish) with a golden, buttery crust, and perfectly chunky tomato sauce since 1983. We get the Zachary’s Special with Italian sausage, green peppers, onion, and mozzarella, or the spinach and mushroom with a side of caesar. And if you’re averse to waiting, or are somehow immune to the charm of all the pizza-inspired artwork that fills nearly every inch of the walls, you can order your deep dish, thin-crust, or half-baked pizza to go." - Lani Conway

The 19 Best Deals For Oakland Restaurant Week - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The stuffed pies at this Rockridge classic are excellent. Their Restaurant Week deal will run you $45 for a medium stuffed pizza (or large thin-crust) and a salad of choice. They also have another option to buy one pizza and get another half off (with similar deals at the Grand Lake location, too)." - julia chen 1

Best Child-Friendly Restaurants in the Oakland, Berkeley, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"Typically a Chicago specialty, deep-dish pizza hit the Bay Area in 1983 via midwestern transplants Zach Zachowski and Barbara Gabel who opened Zachary’s on Oakland’s College Avenue. Now employee-owned, the company has grown to five locations throughout the East Bay, and the pizza is as good as ever. Super chunky tomato sauce crowns traditional and seasonal toppings. Many kids opt for thin-crust, also worthy, and salads that satisfy the parental desire for nutritional balance on pizza night. Winners of the house-hosted, decades-long art contest adorn the walls of all restaurants and make for a fun visual scavenger-hunt distraction for little eyes while the pizza cooks." - Justine Jones

Where to Eat and Drink in Rockridge | Eater SF

"The secret to Zachary’s success could be its unique, two-dough layer system or the zesty, chunk tomato sauce. If you’re just not into deep dish, you should try it anyway, but they also offer delicious thin-style pizza with a crispy, cornmeal crust. Bonus: the restaurant has been completely employee-owned since 2003. Currently only available for takeout and delivery." - Clara Hogan

Camino Will Become Zachary’s Pizza When It Closes in December - Eater SF

"Zachary's Pizza is a local, employee-owned chain that will replace Camino in its space. Known for its thin crust and deep dish pizzas, Zachary's plans to make some design modifications to honor both Camino and their own style, including pizza-themed art on the walls. They have applied for a liquor license, which would allow them to serve liquor, a first for the restaurant. Zachary’s operates under a traditional tipping model but has been 100 percent employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan since 2010." - Ellen Fort

Zachary’s Chicago Pizza at 5801 College Ave in Oakland is a must for any pizza-loving tourist! Their Chicago-style stuffed pizza is unreal—thick, cheesy, with a buttery crust and chunky tomato sauce that hits all the right spots. I got the Zachary’s Special with sausage, peppers, and onions, and it was pure comfort food heaven. The vibe is cozy and family-friendly, with cool pizza-themed art all over the walls. Staff are super friendly, and even when it’s busy, service is quick.

Finally tried this gem! Must try the stuffed mushroom and spinach. The crust and sauce are too good to be true! The chicken barbecue is also so good and I liked how it still had some marinara and went well with the sweetness of the barbecue sauce. 2 mediums was too much for 2 people but having this pizza for 3 days sounds lovely! Lovely place and staff!

This restaurant is amazing—the pizza is generous and packed with flavor! There were three of us, and we ordered a large, and still had leftovers. It’s affordable, located in a beautiful neighborhood, and the staff is friendly and dedicated. The service is excellent. I’ve been there several times and definitely plan to keep going back!

I’ve visited Zachary’s Chicago Pizza a few times, and this time, my friend recommended the pesto pizza, which was absolutely delicious. The College Ave location definitely felt fresher compared to other spots I’ve been to. Our server was fantastic—super friendly with a big smile, which made our experience even better. However, the cashier wasn’t as pleasant. She was a bit rude and seemed to ignore us when we tried to ask if it was possible to modify our order. Despite that, we decided to order a bit more to take home, and the food was still great. Overall, we had a positive experience and would definitely return for the delicious pizza. Just a small note on the customer service, which could be improved.

Google
Decent. Great spot to bring a small group and share a good meal. Had the BBQ chicken, carne and pizza blanca (thin). The BBQ chicken was completely overpowered by the cilantro and raw onion. There was also no BBQ flavour. Would not recommend. The carne was fine. The meat flavours were great and shone through. This is a safe pick. The pizza blanca was the best of our pizzas. You definitely want to squirt some of that lemon onto the pizza though, otherwise it'd be incredibly heavy. Great herbaceous, creamy and savory flavour. Definitely go for this if you're looking for a non-stuffed choice. Atmosphere is nice, the place is a bit cramped though. Pizzas can take a while to come out (makes sense since they have to bake it), so be prepared for a little wait!

Love this place and been coming about 8yrs. Pizza is always hot and fresh. I’ve had the deep dish and the thin crust and both are amazing. The staff is always friendly and helpful and when dining in provide great service. This is definitely a place to check out if you want some great pizza

Google
To be fair, if you like Chicago style, then you may rate it higher than me. But here’s how I see it. We ordered Caesar salad, the Zachary’s 10” stuffed, and one slice of cheese and sausage thin. Two of us. Thank goodness for the slice and salad because the stiffed took almost 40 minutes. The Caesar was very good. They have a nice. Albeit white garlicky, dressing and anchovies. Crisp lettuce. And the thin slice was pretty good, but the crust is pretty hard. Maybe in my head I was imagining it’d be like New York style since they called it “thin”. But it was tasty. The stuffed was pretty for sure but the massive tomato is just not my thing. At least the tomatoes were on the sweet side, not sour at all. When you finally make your way to the crust, it’s quite doughy. Tasty, but doughy. And filling! I only ate two pieces. We left with about half the 10” stuffed to go. The wait service was good. They were very nice and only the one pizza took forever. Everything else was quick. And I really like the ambiance. It’s a nice pizza place/restaurant vibe. They also have a to go counter to order by the slice, or pies I’m sure.

The people are amazing 🤩 and helpful, the price is high but worth it!! I bought a combo X-Large pizza with 2 draft beers 🍻 and gave a 40% tip, total was $90 but all people were perfessional and kind 😊 worth the cost 👍

Yelp
This is the first deep-dish pizza I've tried, and it definitely made a good impression. My partner and I were exploring Rockridge when we found this place and decided to try it. It had been recommended to me before, so I was excited. The waitress recommended the barbecue chicken stuffed pie, so that's what we ordered. I'm from NY, and all the pizza I had tried in the Bay Area before Zachary's just didn't measure up. I was very happy to learn that Zachary's pizza was excellent. It was delicious, unique, and flavorful. All the flavors were well-balanced, too. The service was great; everyone was patient and willing to give recommendations. This restaurant is located in a cute little neighborhood full of street parking, cute coffee shops, and little local stores. Definitely give it a try next time you're in town!

Yelp
The sauce and the cheese are great. I experimented with the butternut squash. It's not bad but it almost felt as if I was eating super soft pieces of potatoes. My family got a regular type of pizza (deep dish - they loved it) and I got some of their sauce to add to mine as I felt it didn't have enough red sauce to make up for the starchy and goat cheese flavor. Getting past that the pizza was really good for what it was. While it wasn't ultimately to my personal liking I will say that I could enjoy it still.

Yelp
I went here with some friends from out of town, and we had such a great time! We had a party of 8, and waited about 30-45 minutes before getting a table. There was a nice seating area for us to chill, and the waiters encouraged us to order prior so we would get our pizza immediately when seated! The place is super cozy, there are a lot of posters and plays into the wooden, surfer (?) aesthetic. We got three pizzas: Zachery's Special (Deep Dish), Thin Barbecue Chicken, and Thin Mediterranean. They all came out about 20-30 minutes after being seated. My favorite was the Barbecue Chicken, it was so flavorful and was not too heavy. I also asked the waiter what their favorite pizza was, and it was Barbecue Chicken too! I also like the Deep Dish, the sauce was fresh and every bite warms up your mouth. I didn't like the Mediterranean as much, I think it needed a bit more freshness, but I ordered it in the past with a smaller size and that was delicious. We ordered XL's for the thin pizza, and the crust was actually pretty thick still. I would recommend getting a smaller size thin pizza, because those have been delicious in the past. Overall, I had a great time and will be coming back to try their other items!

Yelp
Delicious deep dish pizza! Got two deep dish pies for takeout, the Barbecue Chicken pie and the Spinach and Mushroom pie (added pepperoni). Between the two the BBQ chicken was definitely more flavorful, but i actually preferred the simplicity of the spinach and mushroom. I also really liked the tomato sauce w big chunks of tomatoes- pretty tangy which helped cut through the cheesiness.

Yelp
Review for their deep dish pizza takeout. Called to order a large deep dish spinach and mushroom pizza and it came out piping hot about 30 minutes later. Happy to get 15% on Mondays also as a VIP. Service was efficient and friendly. Love the deep dish spinach and mushroom from Zachary's and it's always a crowd pleaser and easy meal for our family.

Yelp
Zachary's Chicago Pizza is a pizza joint in Oakland that specializes in Chicago style deep dish pizza. It's a cozy location with great service and it serves good deep dish that's cheaper then booking a trip to Chi-town. My Overall Rating - 3 Stars Atmosphere - Zachary's is in quaint, cozy part of Oakland. The pedestrian friendly neighborhood welcomes you in. But inside Zachary's is showing its age. There's a dedicated space up front to place your order and a sizable dining room if you want to sit and eat. Plenty of tables and poster art but it feels a bit dated. 1/2 Star. Service - The entire staff was super nice, always smiling, and helpful. There are a few Zachary's in the area, but it feels more like a mom-and-pop shot. Nothing but excellent service. 1 Star. Food - The one feature I look for in a Chicago style deep dish pizza is the crust. Unfortunately, Zachary's lacked the buttery crust that packs rich flavor that cuts into the tangy/tart tomato sauce. The ingredients were high quality, the tomato sauce was thick, and the generous mozzarella cheese created the stringy pull away effect. The staff also served us our first slice, but I couldn't help but return to the crust. Two slices made me full, and we had plenty of leftovers. And while full and happy, I couldn't say I was satisfied. 1 Stars. Will I Return? - Probably not. If you're looking for a Chicago style deep dish pizza, Zachary's is your place in Oakland. But if I'm comparing it to Chicago style deep dish from pizza places from Chicago, it's just ok. 1/2 Star.

Yelp
How I've never written an official review for their staple location on College is beyond me. Deep Dish pizza at its finest! They've been around for years and it's employee owned which is fantastic and everything from the service to the food is never disappointing. The only issue is sometimes getting a table during dinner rush but the vibe is well worth the wait! They did get rid of their rewards program which broke my heart but businesses have to do whatever they can these days to stay open while keeping their prices reasonable, which they have so on behalf of the Bay Area, We love and appreciate you Zacharys!

Yelp
Probably the best deep dish pizza you're going to find outside of Chicagoland. It might not be Pequod's, this is not Chicago, it doesn't have to be - I am always a Chicagoan. But still, stand outside of the restaurant, close your eyes, maybe smell the takeout pizzas walking by you, BART thundering by... and like magic you can imagine yourself getting off the L at Armitage, waltzing towards Clybourn. Gonna get some deep dish. You could be convinced. Back to our current reality.... Did you know that Bay Area people actually have the audacity to put ketchup on hotdogs? Certainly Pizza is a little more important to get right. Zachary's schools the public on how pizza should be done. Plus Zachary's is VERY vegan friendly!

Yelp
What's there to say that hasn't been said? It's the same consistency that it's been for 30+ years. The pizza here is as good as any deep dish spot in Chicago. I always opt for the chicken or the mushroom pizza. Next to cheeseboard, it's one of the best pizza places in the Bay. A must stop for pizza lovers. $12 corkage fee (BYO) - how can you go wrong? It seems less crowded these days then it was 20+ years ago. Most likely it's due to the UberEats/Netflix world in which we find ourselves living this day. Great spot, always fun.

Yelp
Zachary's was highly recommended to us by a family member, it didn't disappoint. The pizzas were full of flavor, and filled us up after 2 slices. The Cesar and arugula salad were great too, perfect amount of dressing. We will go again next time we visit our son
google avatar

Caralisa L.

Yelp
For me, Zachary's takes the crown when it comes to deep dish pizza in the Bay Area...and they have over 225 pizza awards to back up that claim. The deep dish pizzas are filled to the brim and are just happiness in a bite - my order is always the Zachary's Special and a Caesar salad. I don't know what they put in their Caesar dressing but I'd buy it by the bottle if I could!
google avatar

Yelp
The best deep dish. I went here recently after not having it for 20 years and it was exactly as I remembered it. So good

Yelp
I've been to this location multiple times and it never disappoints. Friendly service, good location and plenty of seats available. What more can I ask for? We decided to stop by for dinner on a Tuesday around 5pm, and we were immediately seated next to the window. We ordered a stuffed small Zachary's Western and it was their pizza special. It was more than enough for the 2 of us. The pizza consisted of italian sausage, onions, bacon, mozzarella cheese, and smoky-sweet barbecue sauce. The barbecue sauce combined with the other ingredients made the entire pizza extremely tasted. Their pizza always takes at least 30 minutes to be ready, so I went next door to Trader Joe's to do some grocery shopping. There are also many restaurants and shops nearby that is walkable.
google avatar

Kirit S.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for the last 20 years, at least. It never ceases to thrill me. Their Chicago-style deep dish pies are an amalgamation of the juices from Italian tomatoes, herbs, and a little bit of cheese (they also have vegan cheese), and infuse one's nostrils with joy before imbuing their flavors on your palette. This particular location (one of two) has more seating, and a tiny bit easier parking. Their staff is really friendly, given how busy their establishment is at any given time of any day of the week. This time I just picked up and took the pies home, but in the past I have sat at one of their tables, and enjoyed their homely atmosphere. I think these guys are still the best (Patxi's is close, but still 2nd).

Yelp
I LOVE ZACHARYS!!! My go to order is always the stuffed mushroom and spinach deep dish pizza. Whenever I am in the Bay Area I always try to stop here if I can. It is consistently delicious. The dough is so soft and chewy, it's always piping hot and fresh, and it's deliciously cheesy. I tell everyone who is visiting NorCal that they need to stop by Zachary's if they can. This time I went closer to closing time so it was quieter, but it's equally as good even when it's packed and the wait is long. My waiter was so friendly and was so kind and patient with some of the rudest customers sitting next to us.
google avatar

Jude D.

Yelp
I'm not a big deep dish pizza person, but I went here and got the regular thin crust, which was really good. The toppings were tomato and spinach and were hella fresh. The medium was also a decent amount of food and managed to feed three people.
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
Zachary's isn't what it used to be. I grabbed a large Zachary's Special Deep Dish for the Tyson vs. Paul fight, but it was a bit disappointing. There were significantly fewer toppings than before, and the crust didn't seem the same. Maybe they changed things up. Guess it's a sign to cut back on pizza for a while.
google avatar

Kathleen H.

Yelp
I've loved and patronized Zachary's for 9 years now, since moving to Rockridge. But the pizza they made the other night has killed the whole experience for me. They used no tomatoes, no meat (though it was a carne pizza with four different kinds of meat), hardly any cheese, and all dough. Chasing taste, I find none. Looking for substance and texture, I'm disappointed on all counts. The pizza was bad on the first night and worse the days after as leftovers. Since this is a trend in recent pizzas, I won't go back, though I'm sad to ex it off my list, since I enjoy deep-dish pizza.
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
I love this place. I drive 2 hours to get a slice.there deep dish is even better than Chicago.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Their Thin crust pizza should not be served. It's a hard cracker. Obviously this place is all about deep dish. My mistake. I thought I would try something different. Big mistake. Next time I'm staying with the deep dish.
google avatar

Eloise R.

Yelp
I have come to this location so many times. I am so surprised I have not shared my thoughts. Th cologne location is one of my favorite locations. I love meeting family at this location so we can stroller college ave after we eat. I visited today and got lucky in was able to find parking right away. I picked up their lunch special which I feel gives me the best of both worlds without having to buy a full sized pizza or salad. For about 13 bucks you can get a slice, a side salad and a drink. The portions are super satisfying. Needless to say I will definitely be back if not this location the Solono location very soon

Yelp
I've had their regular crust a long time ago but I finally got to try their deep dish. We ordered a small Zachary's Special which is the classic combination. This was a takeout order. I think because it's a deep dish it took around 30 minutes. Showed up 27 minutes after placing my order thinking it was done but I had to wait about 4 minutes so it does take the whole 30 minutes. Got back in the car and gave the pizza box to my mom trying to eat but it was too hot. Stuffed with sauce, cheese and all the toppings a single slice is like eating two slices of heavenly taste. I honestly thought a single slice was going fall apart but the crust holds everything in place. Excellent service and horrible parking.
google avatar

Schaeffer N.

Yelp
I just love this place. The pizza is excellent and relatively affordable. The vibes are pure family and friends restaurant. It's a destination for a reason, but is totally unpretentious and cozy. A guaranteed bad day killer. You can't not feel better when you approach the door and the hypnotic aromas suck you inside.

Yelp
Now we went back to give Zachery's in college another try, honestly I am all for a good manager vs a so so one. We were surprised with the attitude of the manager, were asking the young cashier to see if they have the deep dish as a slice and the manager jumped in and said, as a matter of fact there is one coming out in one minute and his attitude his spontaneity his enthusiasm in keeping the customer pleased was impressive. I believe praise is due when something is extraordinarily good and meanwhile criticism is due when extraordinarily not good. This time I have to raise my hat to the manager and say keep up the good work. P.s. this was on 4/13/2024.

Yelp
My Italian mentor would be so incredibly disappointed in me if he heard that I willingly ate Chicago deep dish pizza, as he calls it an "abomination." However, after hearing raving reviews from my friends about this place, I finally took the plunge and tried it. And honestly? It isn't that bad, but it isn't good either. I personally would choose a classic thin crust pizza over a deep dish pizza any day, but I can see why someone would enjoy this, but it isn't for me. My friend and I ordered a mushroom and pepperoni small pizza, which was enough for two guys. I didn't really enjoy how the crust was almost flavorless, but the tomato flavor was decent. By the way, if you're hungry, I would suggest ordering ahead of time as it takes about 30 minutes for them to cook the pizza, and they don't sell by the slice either. The service was great, and it's in a convenient location for students which is near the Trader Joe's, and can easily be accessible by bus if you don't have a car. Also, walking here isn't that bad either, it took my friend and I only about 30 minutes to walk back to the UC Berkeley area.
google avatar

Teresa R.

Yelp
Zachary's is always an old favorite. Great deep dish pizza. Good service. And they actually now have where you can get a slice of regular pizza and a salad and a drink for like 13 bucks. Never mind driving to Berkeley just to have a slice.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
Zachary's is probably the best deep dish pizza in the Bay! I absolutely love coming by here when I'm in the area and craving some deep dish pizza. They also offer thin pizza and thin slices (during lunch only?), but it's the deep dish that's their specialty. The food is always solid, they have an amazing sauce and a great crust on their pizzas, the ranch on the side is really good too. The ambiance has a nice local pizza spot vibe with plenty of seating. The service is fast and friendly. Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Value: 4/5 Overall: 4.25/5

Yelp
The O.G. Chicago style pizza place in the Bay Area. We've been here many times over the last 20+ years and it has not changed- and that's a good thing. If it's a weekend night, expect a wait. Parking can be a little tough so if you can, drop somebody off and go on your quest. The wait is worth it. Expect to wait about 30min for a deep dish, which is the standard everywhere.
google avatar

Sanjana S.

Yelp
Zachary's is such a wonderful east bay establishment. It was the first place I had Chicago style pizza. I have been so many times over the years and it never fails to disappoint. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and there was no wait. The service staff were friendly and I appreciate the time estimates for food. We got a salad and a bbq chicken deep dish pizza. The croutons in the salad were a bit harder than I expected but the pizza was delicious as usual. I did notice that the tables seemed pretty close together in the restaurant but because it wasn't full, it wasn't a huge issue. I'll definitely continue to return here!
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
Even though it seems like it is super busy all the time, ordering ahead for takeout is a great option and the pizza is still hot when you get it home. Although I originally liked the deep dish aka stuffed pizza, I have actually now switched and prefer the thin crust. Why? The crust! The perfectly baked cornmeal infused crust puts the thin a notch better. That said, I would have liked a bit more sauce underneath the excellent cheese layer. The service is quick and friendly and the people at Z's work hard and crank out all that pizza efficientl
google avatar

Leo J.

Yelp
I am a Cal alumn so I used to go to Zachary's all the time when I was a student in Berkeley. After moving back to Los Angeles after graduation I've had a big empty hole in my life without their DEEP DISH pizza! I recently went back up to Berkeley and went to Zachary's and trust me the deep dish does NOT disappoint! My girlfriend ordered the thin crust pizza which was good but not as good as the deep dish I got. I ordered the original spinach and mushroom stuffed pizza, 10 inches, and it was so much that we had leftovers and I kept them in the hotel room fridge for the rest of my trip and ate it cold which was still so good. I give it four out of five only because the service could have been better. I felt like our waiting staff wasn't quick and attentive and the only waiter was taker her time with the service. However, other than that I love Zachary's. It is a staple of the area and I can't visit the Bay Area without trying it. Highly recommended and I'll be back!

Yelp
This place is so friggin good. I love the amount of sauce, the amount of toppings, the amount of dough! I've been longing to come here for so so long and I finally got a chance to try it out!!!! Got takeout here and it was piping warm when we sliced into the pizza. Just look at the pictures. It's just so luscious. The tomatoes are plump. The meat is chunky, the dough is thiccccc. I guarantee you're going to be happy, you're going to find joy for the next hour or two once you start digging in! All this food was shred between 2 guys and 2 girls! We still had soooo much left! And and and.... The following day, I heated it up... IN THE MICROWAVE! Don't have a toaster oven sadly... but I THINK.... IT WAS EVEN BETTER!!! I think the microwave softened the dough-y crust.... And and and... I poured some honeyyyyyyyy (bought at clearview orchards)!!! Omg basically made sweetened dough!!! And had a slightly sweetened pizza!!!! You really can't go wrong I bet with the other flavors as well!

Yelp
I've gotten take-out from here as well as dined in the restaurant. I enjoy the SIMPLE process of getting a pie to-go. It's quick, they've kept my name in their system for quite some time, and add an option to get the pizza 1/2 baked so you can cook the rest of it at home for a fresh, out-the-oven pizza at home! Dining in the restaurant is also a pleasant experience (and isn't that why you go out to enjoy a meal?!). Keep in mind that their deep-dish pizzas can take ~40min-ish after they get the order in. To speed things up, I have called-in on my way to the restaurant to get the order started before dining in. This probably works nicely if there is seating available when you get there. Maybe not so much if it's packed busy, but luckily I haven't had an issue. Last but not least, I come for the Chicago style pizza and have yet to try anything other than the deep-dish. After having been to Chicago recently, I can still recall the tastes and flavors of the original pizza there and do confirm Zachary's does come the closest to reminding me of a pizza in Chicago. Service has always been 5/5 for me at this particular location.

Yelp
Long time fave stuffed pizza restaurant. Chicken stuffed pizza - can't go wrong if you like garlic, spinach, and chicken. Also tried the new Matt's special with pesto and artichoke thin crust, a new fave option when we aren't feeling tomatoey. If you are vegan or have allergies, they have a pie for you too, just ask for it or build your own. Just look at the photos. Are any words really needed???

Yelp
I'm from New York - so not a huge fan of pizza casseroles (sorry) but their regular pizzas are great :) Great old school vibe and fun area. Quick service unless you get caught in the lunch or dinner crush (no different than anywhere else).

Yelp
Solid deep dish pizza, the best and my favorite in the Bay Area! It always hits the spot. Tomato sauce is chunky and fresh, cheesiness factor at 10/10, and their meatballs and pepperonis are great. I usually get the Zachary's special, add pepperoni. Or, I get the carne. The thin or regular crust is okay, definitely not as good as the stuffed. They are known for their deep dish. This review is mainly for to go. I've recently been doing pick up and door dash lately because it's always super crowded and their wait times can fluctuate. When I'm hungry, I want to eat when I want. Their restaurant is tiny and you get crammed in their with other people, like knocking elbows sometimes even. Id highly recommend just getting the pizza to go or delivered if you want to try it for the first time rather than going in person. Their pizzas are a little pricey but you get what you pay for!

Yelp
The deep dish its really good for family reunions and it's always a hit so tasty. They have friendly service and most of the time there is a line to get in so I usually order to take home. The atmosphere is like an old pizza joint.

Yelp
Food: 5/5 Service/Wait: 4/5 Price/Value: 4/5 Atmosphere/Uniqueness: 4.5/5 TL;DR: In my opinion, this pizza is better than you can find in Chicago. The crust is not too thick and crispy. The sauce is tasty and flavorful. The wait staff are attentive, even though the (expected) wait for the pizza is long. Barbecue Chicken: 5/5; I really enjoy barbeque sauce on my pizza. The chicken is tender and there is a good amount of it mixed with onions and cheese. Combined with the delicious sauce and crust, this is hands down my favorite pizza in the Bay Area. The portion sizes are very good, considering the price. Everytime I come, I have so many leftovers. The pizza reheated really well, so this is a perfect meal the next day as well. The parking around the Rockridge area is manageable. There was not a wait on a weekday night.

Yelp
I feel like Zachary's did a lot of things right and a few things wrong. I came late on a Thursday night at around closing hour with a group of 10+ and the employees were still careful to take care/be patient with us. This level of customer service is always appreciated. The ambience of the pizza place is quite nice, but when asked what, I cant seem to put a finger on it... perhaps the funny looking artwork? Or perhaps the mirrored walls? Dunno? Kinda quirky but do check it out :). The food was where things began began to be mediocre. We ordered the Large eggplant special pizza ($33) as well as an extra large Zachary's combination ($35.65). Both were thin. While I felt the toppings were great, the crust/bread really let me down. I feel like having good pizza bread is the litmus test as to whether or not a pizza is good and this pizza bread was tough... Especially for this price, I would expect a little more :/ Maybe I should have just tried the deep dish perhaps next time!

Yelp
Great neighborhood pizza joint. Casual dining with 'seat yourself' service, cute customer made art on the walls, and friendly staff. The pizza is amazing. Super tasty, well cooked, and a very SF Bay Area assortment of toppings. Beer and other beverages available to complete the experience. We had a minor with us, so we kept it non-alcoholic. "Thin crust" = standard pizza, actually more like a regular crust (not Saltines thin), with crust on bottom, then sauce, then cheese and toppings. My son got the cheese pizza this way. "Stuffed Crust" = Chicago style = crust on bottom, then cheese, then toppings and a super hearty, chunky tomato sauce. I got the special, which was spinach, red onion, and butternut squash. My friend got their gluten free crust with the chorizo toppings set, and I was surprised that the crust actually tasted good. Not passable. Not tolerable. Actually good! Highly recommend. Yay pizza.

Yelp
I used to come here when I was in college (10+ years ago), and it was always so crowded. Yesterday, I called ahead a takeout order because I didn't want to wait for a table in the restaurant. However, when we got there around noon (on a weekend!) the place was nearly empty. I'm wondering if it's just not popular anymore? We got a medium size deep dish create-your-own with mushroom, pineapple , and pepperoni. It came out to nearly $40! The pizza is pretty yummy (albeit a little too salty for my taste-- but I'm super sensitive to salt), but for me, I still prefer traditional pizza, so coming here would be just to switch it up once in a while. The deep dish pizza is just so heavy; I couldn't handle eating that all the time. Usually I can eat 4-5 pieces of pizza per meal, but I was full after just one slice here. For some reason, we weren't allowed to eat the pizza in the restaurant out of the takeout box. They took the pizza and put it on a platter and gave us plates. We inevitably did not finish the pizza, so we ended up asking for a takeout box again.

Yelp
Pizza was really good! I shared a 14" with a friend and it was more than enough for us. Definitely recommend this place, location is great for walking around before or after too. A lot of cute little shops to browse.

Yelp
What can be said that hasn't already been said? An east bay star that's been shining forever. Thank you!

Yelp
My experience with Zachary's pizza have always been TOP TIER excellent! It's been so long since I've been to have my special deep dish chicken pizza and I must say that they've NEVER disappointed me, ever. I'll forever be impressed with their food, it's VERY comforting and I'm always referring this location to my friends, family and colleagues. Yelp
Zachary's Nostalgia!! This was a hot spot for deep dish pizza during college life at Berkeley and it was so fun to come back with the family! We got a large half spinach mushroom and half Zachary's special. All come loaded with tomatoes! While as delicious as I remember, I'm still going to have to say I like the Blue Line corn meal crust better... I'm sorry Z! We will still be back though and the service was great! Just be aware it does take 45ish min for the pizza to come out. Thankfully they had drawing paper for the kids and we brought card games. There's also a Trader Joe's across the street if you need groceries. We thought about one of us going grocery shopping during the wait but we didn't They give you some lollipops at the end too. It was so nice of our server to ask if that's ok to bring!

Yelp
Service was terrible. I was told they were short staffed, but it an hour and a half to get served at lunchtime. I am a Chicago style deep dish officiated, but an hour and a half wait for a pizza after waiting 15 minutes to order? Wasn't expecting a two hour lunch.

Yelp
They have the yummiest Chicago style pizza. Plus they've been around for years so they know what they're doing and what customers want. Each ingredient is fresh and thoughtfully made. Their staff members are always super friendly and helpful when you have questions about the menu. I always enjoy either a nice glass of wine or an ice cold beer with my pizza and don't sleep on their salads! You might have to search for parking depending on when you go but it's well worth it if you have to walk a bit. The entrance is easily accessible and there's a restroom for customers.
