Every discussion about who has the best pizza in the SF Eastbay, or the Bay Area in general, will always include Zachary's Chicago Pizza. It's even featured on "Check Please! Bay Area."
The other day, I got takeout pizza from the Grand Lake location in Oakland. I ordered the Medium Carne Pizza, Thin Regular Crust, with the 1/2 Baked Option. I read the Zachary's FAQ section on their webpage, and it said the "1/2 Baked" pizza travels well as takeout or delivery if you're not going to eat right away. You follow the instructions, and bake 450*F for 10-15 mins or until golden brown (for thin crust). OMG, it came out great!
The common criteria for a good pizza is: 1) How is the crust? 2) Toppings? 3) How was it baked?
- The crust is delicious. It's buttery, with a cornmeal taste. I believe it's called "thin" as opposed to "deep dish." Because this traditional pizza isn't thin or foldable. The crust is thick enough to hold the thick layer of toppings and cheese. I found the crust to be soft and just right in texture.
- Toppings: "Italian sausage, pepperoni, salami, chopped bacon and mozzarella" are the toppings of the Carne Pizza. Of course the cheese was molten hot coming out of my 450* oven, and the meat toppings were sizzling! The toppings seemed blended together on the pizza. They were in perfect balance, I could taste each item. The cheese was welded to the crust, it didn't slide off when you took a bite.
- Half-Baked Pizza: this option came out great for me, as this pizza option travels well for takeout if you're not going to eat right away. Just 15 mins, and I got a hot fresh pizza out of my home oven. You will need a baking sheet, and some butter. BTW, the pizza wasn't sliced.
Wow, the Carne Pizza is a great traditional style pie.
