I'm dying for a reason to be in this area again. I want to go back so bad, I didn't try nearly enough items! Especially considering how many gluten free options they have... This Latin cafe and bakery has all kinds of delicious tapas, fresh baked pastries and breads, sandwiches, breakfast and brunch dishes served all day, Latin specialties, and a full bar.
The menu starts with my favorite section, appetizers/sides! Empanadas, fried plantains, fried yucca, fried cheese, plantain chips, sides of rice and beans, beef and chicken. Then soups and salads, cachapas and arepas. You could just order a bunch of these tapas and put together a pretty perfect meal.
Zaguán is known for its House Specialties, the most popular being the first 2 items on the list, naturally. There's the #1 Cachapa: D Magazine Award Winner for "Best Latin Lunch." A sweet corn turnover cooked on the grill, filled with beef and cheese, chicken and cheese, or your two favorite ingredients, served with plantain chips. Then there's the #2 Arepa: Another D Magazine Award Winner! A savory corn turnover cooked on the grill, filled with your two fave fillings, served with plantain chips. How do you choose whether you want a sweet or savory corn turnover? What do you guys prefer?? I tend to lean more towards savory meals, but a sweet turnover is extra delicious when stuffed with salty-savory shredded beef and sharp, salty cheese!
Other house specialities include flavorful items like the #6 Latin Crepe: chicken and ricotta wrapped in a crepe and topped with tomato sauce, cheese, olives, and raisins; the #8 Pork Loin La Habana: A pan-cooked pork loin topped with orange; and the #13 Shrimp Lima: Shrimp seasoned with ajiamarillo and green onions, topped with cilantro. Doesn't everything just sound so good?! I only had a handful of items but they were all stellar. The cheese empanadas are beautiful, chewy, gooey on the inside and the fried yucca just completely melts in your mouth. The plantain chips are addictive, crunchy, and the perfect mix of sweet and salty. The espresso is strong and smooth. The freshly baked breads are all shimmery golden brown and I don't think anything could possibly smell better!
There's a fantastic coffee menu, cocktail list, and dessert list. You can order incredible homemade cakes that'll feed 15-80 people (orders required at least 24 hours in advance), like Tres Leches, Brazo Gitano, Milhoja, Black Forest, and Tiramisu. Don't worry, Zaguán also sells plenty of cakes by the slice alongside cookies, napoleons, flan, and stuffed puff pastries (like guava and cheese, yes please). And y'all, there's seriously so many enticing gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options.
It's super cozy in here. Feels like how I imagine a Latin cafe to feel. Casual, warm colors, lively music, the smell of strong coffee and fried dough in the air. Pretty much heaven.
