There's something to be said about sitting on a roof of a building, overlooking the city during the night with a cocktail in hand. One feels powerful, "on top of the world" with the satisfaction of a hunter just having vanquished a hard-fought prey and if the company is right, the hours stream through the fingers like holding water in your hand. Located a block from the Colorado river and in a very safe and might I add, beautiful part of Austin, Zanzibar is a restaurant that oozes class but welcomes patrons of all persuasions, ethnicities and social statuses. Although trying to find out how to get there can make an explorer out of you, once the foot steps outside of the elevator the adventure can begin in earnest.
I have been wanting to try a rooftop experience since I moved here roughly three years ago and I'm here to tell you my patience for booking this safari paid off in spades. Reservations for Zanzibar was a birthday present for my... ahem 21st (or a larger number) and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect way to spend my night. Upon exiting the elevator, one is hit with a "jungle" feel juxtaposed with a sense of unbridled giddiness as it's a posh setup. Shrubs, large leaf plants, trees and live bamboo almost make a canopy to the hostess station with a low music playing in the background as voices of joy are strewn about the clanking of glasses, toasting important events. What's intriguing is the ceiling is very high up, but it feels open, right smack dab in the middle of town. Give yourself the liberty to slow down and indulge even before you're seated as the restaurant has a Zenn, tropical and forest feel to it; all blended to perfection.
The waitstaff promptly seated us on a low based wicker couch with cushions in front of our own bamboo coffee table adorned with modern stylized tiki torches. The skyline view from my perch was astonishing at 10pm on a cool March evening. You can see the other buildings with all their lights glistening yet letting the eyes wonder down to ground level the ants have no idea they're being watched from above. Zanzibar's menu is limited but the bounty from the big game hunt is astonishing and I highly encourage indulging in their offerings. First up the tropical cocktails are phenomenal. We had several drinks and they all had a flair to them; flowers kiss the rim, fire burns on top and in the center, herbs swim liberally, fruits float on top of these expertly crafted and whimsical cocktails while some are served in playfully made canteens and glasses. I can't recommend one as I have a character limit on this review but I don't think there's a bad choice.
As for the food I was expecting a mediocre effort but dear God they were on point. I asked the waitress for her recommendation as she's the safari guide for the evening. Her first suggestion was the shrimp skewers. Four huge U10 cilantro marinated shrimp were delivered to me and not only were they beefy and fresh as if they were just caught off a boat but they were perfectly cooked. A slight resistance to the teeth and then the teriyaki glaze coated the tongue. To be honest, there should be a speed limit because I almost devoured them as a hungry lion. A superb effort to say the least. Our waitress also suggested the Kahuna Burger. I'm a former chef and while I don't get burgers that much, I'm recreating this thing because it hit all the right notes. The Wagyu beef was cooked perfectly and the sweet and salty teriyaki glaze oozed into the meat taking the flavor to another level. The cheddar added a nice sharp contrast while the grilled pineapple had the acid and texture to cut the richness. The sweet onions, napa cabbage and kewpie mayo just toyed with my emotions. I wanted to stand over this prey, proud that I found the unicorn of burgers. I will admit, the waitress came back and asked what I thought. Trying to be clever, "the big Kahuna burger? That was a tasty burger..." (paraphrasing Pulp Fiction to which the waitress had no clue. I told her my tip was dependent on her watching the movie).
Overall Zanzibar hits all the right notes but it takes not prisoners in terms of the experience of a lifetime. The food is excellent, the drinks are top notch and creative, the view... I can't say enough about the view, all from an exotic atmosphere that is designed to encourage relaxation and exploration. It's part tropical, part jungle, part elegance, part fun and all memorable. I'm booking another trip because I'll remember this adventure for the rest of my life.
