Zaro's Family Bakery - Review - New York - The Infatuation

"Another option for kosher baked goods is Zaro’s. The original location in the Bronx was founded by a Jewish immigrant back in the ’20s, but now they have locations everywhere. For Rosh Hashanah this year, they’re selling things like round challah, rugelach, black and white cookies, and cakes. You can place your order for pickup or delivery through their website. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Google
I have visited a couple of times to get some pastries and desserts and have found the quality of their products to be really good. The presentation of their dishes is pretty good as well: beautiful pastries and desserts, much attention to detail, very well presented board of dishes, very cute boxes and packing 👍🏻 and the service has been very good the times I have visited. The bakery is very well kept and clean The only con for me would be the prices, which I believe are a little bit high for pastries.. I once got a box of cookies (which is not really a large box) and I believe it came to almost USD$20 dollars Today I got a spinach and cheese pastry, a lemon loaf (a piece of lemon cake) and a small bag of biscotti and it made a total of USD$19 - USD$20 again 😅 That would probably be my only observation... other than that 👍🏻👍🏻

Google
Love their sourdough loaves and the scones! Super flaky and delicious! This place is small but always had a nice variety of bagels and other breakfast pastries as well as cake . If you’re craving a scone this is the place to go.

Google
My neighbor brought me a couple of Is bagels, At this time I can Only Comment on The Bagle, I just Had.! It was the Best NY Bagle Out There, As far as I'm concerned..You can't find Better, Bagels Anywhere.! I will update more on ZARO's Later.!

Every single time I come in here, I wait over 20 minutes simply trying to place a order and the workers pretend like you’re not there even if you say Goodmorning or excuse me, they don’t care for in person sales they only care for their online order sales it’s actually so sad that I lived in the area for years but everytime I come into this specific zaros on Parkchester it’s actually disappointing to walk out empty handed after waiting over 20 minutes

I stopped by for an iced latte and it was delicious. Saturday vibes are chill. My barista was very nice.

I really wish there was a half star. 2.5 stars would have been perfect for this middle of the road bakery. First time in a while my kids didn't finish their cupcakes. They're pretty heavy on the sugar here, a lot of stuff is sickingly sweet but that's par for the course with Zaro's. I've only been to one on Jersey that didn't try to give you diabetes with every bite. On the positive side the bread is good, I think that's what Zaro's is known for anyway. It's a shame really. I grew up with Zaro's but some where along the line they changed something and it didn't work out for them.

Google
I was in there just now, place my order for pasties, however the most unsanitary and disgusting thing happened. The man serving as both cashier and server started sneezing without covering his blasted mouth. I told him he needs to cover his mouth but he didn’t so I left. Can’t say I will shop there again. I will not recommend this branch of Zaro. 😡

Google
I love this little cafe!! The employees are all delightful, it’s always clean, very small! But the service is always excellent! I always feel comfortable here! But definitely the prices are expensive! That’s the only downside.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this cafe recently because I needed a new coffee spot and I'm really glad I did. Their iced lattes are really good and they have an assortment of pastries. The cheese danish is very tasty. The interior of the cafe is really nice. It's small but it's clean and has a little bit of space if you want to sit for a while. The service was great they were really sweet!

Yelp
The worker was extremely polite and the pastries were all fresh and the coffee delicious. Also about 8 seats.

Yelp
DO NOT GO TO THIS STORE. They treat customers like trash. The two employees in the morning (Short Middle Aged Man/Short Middle aged Woman) talk sht about their customers to their face in Bengali (They assume no one speaks the language) You ask for coffee with almond milk, they will use regular milk (hide it) and tell you they honored your request. They argue amongst each other in front of customers, yelling most the time. Can you imagine working 12 hours shifts and you just want to relax at home with your coffee and a bagel and yet you cant because the employees treat you like your money doesn't matter. Like you as a person doesn't matter. People just want to grab a coffee without being disrespected. If you are one of those people, there's a dunkin donuts and a Starbucks just down the block from Zaro's. Go there for your fix, not here. They treat black people with such disrespect it's sickening. This location has one black employee (at nights) and two employees in the morning are constantly making racial remarks about the one individual. Most of the nasty remarks are in reference to the color of his skin and race. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ESTABLISHMENT. I've been recording audio every visit to this location. If proof is needed of the racial remarks in Bengali, please reach out to me at truthmark@gmail.com If you had a terrible experience at this location, please report your situation to the Better Business Bureau. You work hard for your money, you should be treated like a person, no matter the color of your skin.

Yelp
There's bread, and then there's the kind of bread that has practically a line around the block (well...not really- but in many ways it does). I'm not getting into Zaro's lengthy history, but will mention, this particular Zaro's- is Parkchester's best-loved treasure. Original location was just a couple doors down, directly across the Parkchester 6 train Line. I don't know how long Zaro's has been in the area, but I've been coming here since the mid 80s. When news broke out that Zaro's was closing its doors a few years ago to make way for a Boston Market, everyone felt a sense of sadness. I was mind-blown when they came back to their stomping grounds soon after. The spanking NEW Zaro's still has all the goods they're known for- but in a smaller space. They still have the very best loaves- Challah at that, rolls, pastries, and pies and so much more. Stopped in on a Saturday morning to grab Mom a sliced Challah Bread loaf, Spinach-Cheese Croissant thingy and a few other pastries. Service is still- so, so, so friendly. I'm confidently going all in with a 5. Just because they're in The BX, staying true to their family tradition, back in action in the community, excellent food and tasty pastries and service. What more do you want? Zaro's really goes above and beyond. And truly digging how Zaro's is still stepping their history several notches up right in Parkchester.

Yelp
This is my favorite bakery in the whole wide world. My dad put me on to this place as a kid. And since then this is the only place I get my birthday cakes from. They offer an endless Variety of sweets and sandwiches. This place is a 10/10 hands down.

Yelp

Yelp
I am so very disappointed. I am a relocated NY'er and I really wanted some B&W Cookies. I ordered a Dozen that were sent overnight. Cost about $10 per B&W Cookie. I really miss the B&W Cookies from NY and wanted to treat myself, my excitement was overwhelming, until I got them and saw them, how they were wrapped and then it got worse when we tasted them. The box and the safety of delivery = Great, no issues. The issues are below. The cookies are wrapped in cheap plastic so the icing is attached to the plastic and not the cookies. You have to scrape the icing to get them to "sort of" stay on the cookies. The cookies themselves do not taste authentic, they taste cheap. The cookie/cake itself is hard, very dry, has a chemical taste I cannot put my finger on it. Not like the Cookies, I get when in Brooklyn. There is no moisture, so hard and pasty. It's supposed to be more of a cake than a cookie and this is neither, it's like biscuit or pancake dough? No hint of vanilla or lemon. It's like they've been frozen/defrosted and then stored for 2-3 years before sold. The icing almost tastes spoiled, a bit rancid. Not the typical NY B&W Cookie icing. Very thin, many areas of the cookie are missing the icing. I understand keeping the costs down, but not sure what "out of the box" mix they're using but it's past its use-by date. $110 tossed away, and worse, my excitement to get some authentic B&W cookies totally demolished. They should be ashamed to sell and ship these cookies.

Yelp
Everything sparkles because the store just opened. A new, small, boutique-style pastry/coffee shop back at the Parkchester stop on the 6 train line. A different design and great improvement from the previous locations that was a few doors down. A young gentlemen greeted me from behind the counter as soon as I opened the door. There are several different treats to choose from. Even a "Cretzel" which apparently is hybrid of a croissant and a pretzel ($2.99). I went with a cheese danish. It was fresh, sweet and flaky. All the individual treats are about $3 each. One observation that can be improved upon is customer can actually get a little too close to the goods. The glass/ sneeze guard should be higher or the pastry should be better protected. Sorry admittedly a little germaphobe over here. Overall glad to see that Zaro came back to the neighborhood.

Yelp
I usually try and come here everytime I'm in the Bronx but I feel like their quality has gone down. I'll give them another try but Im on the fence. They still have a display of croissants, muffins, and Danishes.

Yelp
Terrible and overpriced! I came in because it looked so nice so I ordered a challah bread (which looked delicious) with cream cheese (because originally I was going to get a bagel) and they charged 95c for the cream cheese, which I'm totally fine with IF ONLY THEY HAD GIVEN ME CREAM CHEESE! How can you charge a client almost a dollar for cream cheese and then be cheap with the spread? (See pictures attached) honestly I couldn't gotten an entire thing of cream cheese with that and put a sufficient amount myself. The bread also wasn't good, it looked delicious but it was the same as if I would've gotten a 50c piece of bread from the supermarket. Not worth it. Don't come here. At least not for breakfast. I wanted to try their sweets but now I'm hesitant

Yelp
The Great grandson of the bakery saw us wandering lost trying by to find Biltmore room. He kindly took us on a short tour of the station explaining all the little quarks and features that made the trip so much cooler. Once we got there, we found out he is one of the brothers of the Zoros Bakery. After looking around, we went over to the bakery in the grand central station and met the other brother, who was just as kind and welcoming. We learned that the bakery was founded in 1927 in the Bronx and has grown to 11 locations making it through covid and the Great Depression. I am truly impressed with the quality and family hospitality that they gave us. It's not something you see these days. Here's 5 starks to one of the best bakeries in NYC! Remember to get the black and white cookie it's worth every penny.

Yelp
The service was fine. The ambiance was very chill. But the latte, although very nice price, tasted like the espresso beans was burnt to a crisp, way too bitter. The milk was not frothed properly, the milk frother looked like it was never wiped down. They do not use a proper espresso machine, it's one of those automatic ones. I don't recommend, the only coffee place I like around is The Way Cafe even though it stinks in there not bad smell but they need a better ventilation system in the kitchen.

Yelp
This is the new location (they literally just moved around the block). Went in on a Monday morning, it's both very clean and very new and there are pastries galore. Ladies who took my order were friendly. Had a whole wheat bagel with cream cheese which was $2.99, definite not the best or freshest bagel I've ever had for this price but it wasn't bad. I would definitely return and try something else off the menu next time.

Yelp
Wow. It's been years since I've been to Zaro's. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with warmth and a smile. Jaly is setting the precedent for customer service all around the world. She was extremely kind just because. Little did she know that I was on my way to a funeral and she truly made my day. She even gave me a sample of carrot cake. Be kind always. You never know what people are going through. Thank you so much for the love, Jaly. May God bless you & keep you. Support your Bronx Businesses.

Yelp
SLOWEST SERVICE I'VE EVER SEEN IN NEW YORK! This city moves FAST. We are in a rush to get to work, a rush to get home. Service workers usually know this and move their asses. but not here! Here we have one lonely guy working behind the counter who can't multi-task and handles one customer at a time. If you hate that hustle and bustle, and miss getting slow, drawn out service in whatever part of the country you used to live in, well come on down to Zaro's at Parkchester.

Yelp
I ordered the Baker's dozen bagels for $35.00. It was supposed to be 12 bagels of a single flavor, 1/2 lb. plain cream cheese & 1/2 lb. of butter. In the instructions box I asked if I could get an assortment of flavors. They would not do it, but that's to be expected because "an assortment" is not an ordering option. Anyway, I received 11 sesame bagels and 1 everything bagel (I guess that was my assortment) in an opened plastic bag. They were not split, warmed or anything. There was NO butter, & NO cream cheese. The taste quality was POOR. I would have had better quality if I went to the supermarket and bought a couple of packs of Thomas' bagels at $2 each.

Yelp
I have to admit, Zaro's Family Bakery was wonderful. We will be making this a regular spot. Most everything I've tried until now have been incredibly good. Crew is super pleasant and definitely will help you with everything. Definitely a place to try out.

Yelp
Great. That's all. Just unbelievable. More than anything, Zaro's Family Bakery has an awesome vibe. Perhaps the best coffee drinks I've ever had. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Go now.

Yelp
Love the bagels but what happened to the brownie cookie?? I have not seen them since the pandemic.

Yelp
Ordered cakes from Zaro's for a birthday on Goldbelly. Failed to deliver the original order. Goldbelly made a replacement order that also was never delivered. ZERO STARS!

Yelp
Alright I only tried the black and white cookie, but I would still go back over and over again just for that cookie! It was huge and soft and delicious! I am usually not a fan of these cookies at all, but after a nibble I devoured that bad boy! It has a wonderful soft cookie underneath with a smooth texture and great not over sweetened flavor. Then there is a sugary icing on top to counter the lightly sweetened cookie. Overall love this cookie! Sad I only got one before we left!

Yelp
Everything about this spot is awesome. It's a blessing to have such spots cropping up in your neighborhood! Everything that I have tried has been pretty flavorful. The staff are always so friendly. So happy I gave this place a try!

Yelp
Oh my God, Zaro's Family Bakery was really phenomenal. Consistently delicious, great quality and service! Each and every single menu item that we have ordered was very fresh and yummy. Service was good and everybody working here was incredibly nice and helpful. Zaro's Family Bakery was awesome.

Yelp
Excellent customer service! This Zaros, is brand new and locatedbin the heart of the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx (a middle class/ working class area). The atmosphere is great, and I personally like it because not only is EVERYTHING delicious and fresh, but also because the ghetto low class scum tend not to come here.

Yelp
Love the new location and interior design. The pastries are still very delicious. However, the service could improve by simply having people who can problem solve instead of going off on a he said she said battle. To stop the bickering I had to jump in to clarify what I said. What seemed to be the management stood on the sidelines clueless the whole time. What makes matters worse is if I hadn't checked my receipt before leaving they were going to charge me for 2 drinks and let me walk out with 1. The repetition of them explaining the problem without hearing a solution began to drive me crazy. To make this encounter come to an end I said "I ordered... but I'll take what I was charged for." SHESH! Too much. Mistakes happen, I get it! But again, having employees who can problem some would be nice. Ps: The manager said "bless you" to me with a smile seconds after I sneezed while writing this review on their stool by the door. It was sweet and her smile was warm. Definitely lightened the mood.

Yelp
I've never been to an in person location, but Zaro's sells their bread at my local grocery store in NC. I can say hands down their challah was the worst I've ever had. It was extremely dry and crumbly. They also sell round challah in November, well past the New Year. I even checked the expiration date and it was apparently "fresh". Very disappointing!
google avatar

Jasmin S.

Yelp
They claim to be a family bakery but when i asked if my 8 year old daughter can use the restroom the staff very rudely told me "our bathroom is not for the public" I'm disgusted .These employees or a disgrace to the zaro name.
google avatar

Sadri B.

Yelp
i try to avoid zaro's family bakery whenever i am in the parkchester section of the bronx in the oval cause just looking at all the sweets adds a few pounds to my gut . this bakery has been around a long time and the black &white cookies and rye bread is my favorite . the pastries , the breads , the bagels , the beverages , all are hard to resist and why would you . the neat organized display of goods makes it easy for the folks behind the counter to grab exactly what i am pointing at and i am pointing plenty. i was only here for 6 cookies and 2 loafs of bread but i went over my limit which will make me avoid getting on a scale any time soon . glad zaro's is still around in parkchester and its worth the trip .

Elsie S.

Yelp
This place is over priced for baked goods that have been sitting in the window display for two days. I usually get my cheat dessert once a week and I unfortunately went in here to get a brownie. The brownie was so stale and rock hard that it could easily break a window. I've had their brownies before and they were actually good, but the brownie I had yesterday tasted like charcoal and a hint of cocoa. Plus it should've been a warning when the lady took the brownie from the front of the display.

Yelp
Haven't been to the new location but the old one was great and had been right around the corner for years where the Boston Market is now. They were always very friendly, helpful, courteous and had a good selection of things to eat there!

Wayne B.

Yelp
Bronx Food. Manhattan Prices. This is definitely a grab and go Shop; it's too small to stop and eat. The Staff is familiar, yet non-welcoming.

Queen B T.

Yelp
Thumbs down! I had an almond croissant that was so stale I could barely bite it. The saleswoman had to feel the hardness when she picked it up but sold it to me anyway. I've had better pastries at the local supermarket. Very disappointed. I won't be shopping here again. Poor excuse for a bakery.

Anukii L.

Yelp
I went to a grand central location last week, brought one croissant and coffee and they charged me $34. Cashier didn't even gave me a recipe and I find out when I got home. Such a rude and unprofessional staff. Probably stealing money all the time from customers!!!
