The Hottest New Restaurants to Try Around Baltimore

"The world could always use another Italian market, and Zavino is an exciting addition to the surplus of new openings at Cross Keys. Yes, this is a place to shop for everything to build your next charcuterie board, and also contains a highly curated selection of wine, amari, liquor, and beer. But don’t sleep on the made-to-order food menu. With a kitchen helmed by chef Andrew Wienzirl (formerly of The Brewer’s Art and Maggie’s Farm), these Italian dishes are top notch. Standouts include the Fico Suave pizza, a bechamel base topped with sweet roasted figs, salty speck, mozz, goat cheese, pecorino, arugula, and drizzled with balsamic. They do the classic subs right too, like a meatball and Italian cold cut, but creativity (and spice) shine in innovations like the Calabrian hot chicken sandwich made with chile oil, hot honey, and gorgonzola all tucked inside a toasted hoagie roll." - Jess Mayhugh, Tierney Plumb

Sandwiches were amazing … had the chicken Caesar with the intention of saving half for later. But it was so good I ate the whole thing. Not much indoor seating.

The place has a great vibe and an impressive drink selection, but the food is just okay. I tried the garlic bread, which tasted a bit stale, though the pasta and sauces were fresh. Overall, it’s a nice spot to hang out and enjoy a pleasant evening.

If you're looking for an authentic casual Italian experience this is the place to go! ZaVino is an Italian marketplace with a wide variety of wines, meats, cheese and your random cooking essentials alongside some deliciously made to order food. We went with a Big Parma white pizza as well as a Ninth Street Special hot sandwich that we split while sharing one of the most delicious Caprese Salad ever. If you're only looking for something sweet you can get also peruse their variety of handmade desserts like the traditional Tiramisu or a piece of Flourless Chocolate torte with hazelnuts. Bottom line is this is definitely a place to check out. Only wish is that it had inside tables though please note there are tables on the outside which are not the best option during Spring cause they are covered in pollen.

Google
4 stars for the market, 5 stars for the sandwich I ordered! The market is nice, a decent selection, but smaller than other Italian markets in the area. I thought the prices were a little high on some of the things I perused while waiting for my sandwich. But, this is not really a review about the market, it is about that sandwich! The Italian Combo (mortadella, capicola, salami, pepperoni, lettuce, tomatoes, shaved onion, hoagie spread, vinaigrette, hoagie roll). It was really amazing. I thought it might be impossible to beat diPasquale's Italian sammie, but this might just do it. The bread was amazing, firm and chewy without being tough enough to tear up your mouth by the time you are done eating. Really tasty bread too. The meats and dressing on the sandwich were fresh, bold and so flavorful. I don't know what is in the dressing on the sandwich, but it was so freaking good! I am really impressed by this sandwich. I ate the sandwich in the store at their counter space. My only complaint about that is that it is February and it is COLD in that store, plus the marble top was freezing to the touch AND metal chairs. I was dying by the time I left. I wish they could do something to warm up the store in general.

Google
Love the atmosphere and food here. Walking in and seeing all the authentic and fresh foods, you can just tell the food is going to be good. We got the Italian combo sandwich and a mushroom pizza. So good. Best Italian sub I’ve found since visiting little Italy. The pizza was great too. The ingredients good quality. Love that it has outdoor seating. We visited during lunch but it’s probably great to eat at the outdoor tables at night for dinner.

The Hail Caesar was the perfect hoagie to try on my first visit. Everything was well seasoned, perfectly blended together, and piled high on a fresh pillowy roll. I washed it all down with the refreshing tipopils pilsner. Needless to say, this place is certified to fill your belly any day.

Google
Best pizza in Baltimore. The crust is both crisp and chewy without being heavy. I don't normally order a plain cheese pizza but the rest of the family enjoys it, so I did. Excellent. The tomato sauce was tangy delicious. I believe my other favorite is called Big Parma-savory and salty without being too heavy and rich. The sandwiches were also savory. Good prices, great location with beer and wine!

Google
They call it the Italian Combo. The sub was really good. I brought it home to eat because they didn't have any regular tables to sit at. I could smell the oil, vinegar, and seasonings the whole way home. The roll was great!

Yelp
Wow!! Fairly new Italian Deli in Cross Keys. My sister in law brought over an assortment of subs and a pizza for Sunday Football. We had the cold Italian cold cut combo, chicken Parm, meatball, and the pork sandwich which was all warm sandwiches. Good quality meat, the sub buns were soft, seasonings were spot on. Def a new favorite when we visit the Baltimore area!!!

Yelp
With Cross Keys expanding so rapidly, I wanted to try one of the newer food options in Cross Keys. ZaVino was today's pick. The establishment is beautiful with an array of Italian food and wine for purchase. They also have food for carryout as well. You can eat in ZaVino's but they do not have an expansive eating area inside the store. You can either order at the counter or they have one self-kiosk for ordering. That said in the midst of me placing my order at the kiosk, a cashier stopped me and stated she would take me at the register. Why, I'm not sure but it felt it weird and made me slightly uncomfortable. I asked her if they sold slices of pizza and she shook her head no, while barely speaking up to answer my question. She also didn't offer the selection of single sliced focaccia pizza they have for purchase-also odd. I feel like a good cashier/salesperson would be able to identify what you need, by what you're asking for, then offer a comparable (if available) option to meet the customer's needs. Again, this was not the case and I did not see the pizza slices until I was exploring the store while waiting for my food to be prepared. Again, so very odd. Also, my personal experience with the customer service overall in ZaVino's wasn't engaging or welcoming. Nobody really made eye contact, smiled, offered to assist-nothing. I was excited about getting the pizza due to the pictures and reviews, yet I opted for a chicken Caesar instead given my experience noted above. Definitely regretted the salad decision upon receiving, but wanted to be open about the experience. The chicken was moist but for some reason just seemed warmed versus grilled. The dressing-was not a fan. It was that thick dip like dressing, with not a great Caesar taste. The homemade croutons weren't even a hit for me as I'd expected them to be. I love homemade croutons, bummer. Needless to say, I'd like to return just for the pizza but given my experience with the customer service, I'm skeptical and it's not happening. I probably shouldn't have spent my money here, I get it, but y'all I was STARVING and I wanted to try some place new convenient to my next meeting destination. I've learned my lesson and next time I'll just starve. Cheers to a great time!

Yelp
Cute little market! My friend and I got coffee at Kneads and grabbed sandwiches here for lunch. The sandwiches are a bit steep in price. I ordered the chicken parm sub ($16). The sub was in one word, fine. It is on the larger side, so could be shared. That is how my friend described her caprese sub (fine and big). Not the best, not the worst. Her husband did love his italian sub tho! I also grabbed a bag of pesto potato chips that were by the register, I did not like them at all (lol). I also grabbed a small block of interesting cheese, which I loved and thought was reasonably priced. Overall, I would definitely return to try out some of the other subs. The menu is quite extensive and the ingredients seem to be high quality. Service was friendly and the place was very clean!

Yelp
Nestled in the Cross Keys shopping center, sits the fairly new Italian restaurant and market, ZaVinos. A quaint restaurant where you can pop in for a quick bite to eat, grab some carry out, pick out a delicious bottle of wine, or shop for those rare Italian items you can't find in your local grocer. The smell of wood-fire pizza wafts in the air as you walk inside ZaVinos, which you can see the pizzas being made in front of you in their open kitchen. You can parous around the market and gawk over all that the market has to offer and think about what you can make at home with the specialty items, while waiting for your Italian fare to be prepared. And the staff are all helpful, with an associate to assist you in picking out the perfect bottle of wine as well. I opted for the Pesto Pizza, which was quite tasty. A decently sized pizza for one person or enough to share with another person if you choose. A bright pesto on top of a red sauce with chicken and sprinkled with a crispy breadcrumb topping, yum! I popped a squat at their counter to enjoy my dinner. They also have outside seating for the warmer months to enjoy your food. ZaVino's offers a variety of pizzas, pasta, sandwiches, and salads. They also have a section where you can purchase some of their prepared food items to take home and reheat. With so many items on ZaVino's menu that interest me, I'm looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
At least 3 staff literally standing idle looking at us while we stood at the counter to order food for at least 5 minutes, no one helped. The store owner finally came around and had the nerve to tell me to be patient. There are a dozen niche Italian marketplaces in the city, go to one that appreciates your business and makes your satisfaction a priority.

Yelp
I'm going five stars. I was visiting (no surprise) Alway Ice Cream at Crosskeys and saw a patron with a pizza box from ZaVino. I was curious! Went home and looked them up. The location is on the upper level of the complex. If you park in the lower lot you can walk around back of the ice cream shop and take the stairs up. Or, park in the upper deck. The shop has a large selection of wines for sale and does sell by the glass. There's a cold counter with items to purchase including tiramisu. They have a proper pizza oven, which was great to see. The pies are personal size and the menu is extensive for a quick sit down spot. We ordered two pies. I had the eggplant with hot honey pie, awesome. Highly recommend. I'm told the pepperoni was great as well. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Super casual. For a quick bite to eat, I recommend trying them out!

Yelp
ZaVino is a new Italian market in the cross keys shopping center! The food is absolutely delicious!! They have an awesome assortment of cheeses, meats, wine, and spreads for all of your charcuterie needs! The owner, Gino and his team are so welcoming and kind.

Yelp
I stayed at the hotel next door so I ate here 4 nights in a row. My favorite was definitely the Hail Caesar Sandwich. The soup is delicious and I would order the pizza again. You can order online or order at the counter...they get the food out quickly. There are so many good wines and Italian drinks to choose from. This is the perfect place to come to if you want to make a good charcuterie board.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches, nice wine selection! I've gotten the roast pork sandwich twice. Would love more broccoli rabe on there but otherwise it hits the spot every dang time.

Yelp
Yes finally! So happy the Roland Park area has an awesome new Italian hotspot. ZaVino has a great selection of sandwiches, mouthwatering pizzas and desserts such as tiramisu. They have a grab and go refrigerated section or you can place an order for fresh hot food. They also have an extensive wine selection. I am afraid this may be my new go to for quality take out during the week!

Yelp
I ordered the Italian Combo sandwich for myself and the Cabrese for my wife. Both excellent. When my wife says something was really good, that is saying something.

Yelp
Very good mozzarella sticks. Comes with four of them but I ate one. Cheesy and crispy

Yelp
Today was our first time here and it was / is fantastic! The food is incredible. Looks like our family has a new Friday night steady for dinner.

Yelp
Love this Italian market. Great atmosphere, service & food! You can shop the market area while your fresh pizza is being baked. Easy parking!

Yelp
What a great addition to our area!! My wife and I stopped in to check it out and ordered probably the best pizza in the area and a bottle of wine. We opened it while we waited. The place is bright and the staff is very welcoming and helpful. The pizza was fantastic and the meatballs were the best we have had in a long time. There are a few places similar in the area and this place is the best. I strongly recommend ZaVino and we will definitely be regulars.

Yelp
Ordered the mortadella and burrata sandwich and it changed me life. The customer service was splendid and the sandwich was superb, 10/10!

Josh P.

Yelp
The short is, the food and staff were great, and I highly recommend this place. We got the americano pizza, fried mozzarella, and Italian sub and each was amazing. Not to mention the staff was supper friendly and helpful for food and wine selection and we were able to get a half bottle of wine to enjoy at the tables outside. Everyone should give this place a try.

Yelp
I would like to give this place ZERO stars! I went to this place on my birthday to have a glass of wine with my mother today and to look at the wine and cheese, fig jams, and chutney selections. Unfortunately upon our arrival not ONE person at ZaVino spoke to us, greeted, or asked us if we have any questions. Not a way to do business or customer service. At the time there were more (visible) employees in the store than customers. We saw a total of 2 employees at the sandwich making section and at the register, who did not greet us when we walked in, this is including 4 gentleman: one behind the wine tasting bar and 2 outside of it with 5-6 bottles of wine that appeared to be rose's and white wines. They were each talking to each other as we browsed each of the wine isle's. Still not a peep. We browsed for a minute, and after deciding not to order a glass wine or buy the cheese or chutneys on display we left. This was at 2:30 pm on a Thursday afternoon. I called the restaurant to address this to their manager, who was incredibly rude, talking over me when I explained that was our experience. He proceeded to tell me that they had just opened 3 days ago (today is 10/3), however my mother was at this establishment with a friend the previous Saturday, 9/28. I'm not sure why the manager was defending that terrible service after praising their training for their employees. Wow! Lastly, he said that he hopes that his employee behavior won't deter us from coming back. If your staff doesn't know how to greet customers as a part of their job, I won't be coming back. Word to the wise: you never know who is coming into your establishment, and for a new place opening I would expect better!
