Zhangliang Malatang - Review - Chinatown - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Zhangliang Malatang is part of a Chinese chain that specializes in individual hot pot and dry pot, and it’s good for a quick and hearty meal in Chinatown. You start your build-your-own-bowl journey at refrigerated shelves full of proteins including cuts of beef, lamb, and fish balls, plus vegetables like bok choy, lotus root, and enoki. Armed with a plastic bowl, tongs, and your imagination, you can be as simple or as outlandish as you want (just know that the price is based on weight). After constructing your masterpiece, finish up by telling the staff at the counter whether you want everything in a broth (mushroom, pork, or tomato) or stir-fried in Sichuan spices. The end result might not be the top hot pot or dry pot in the neighborhood, but it’s still tasty enough for a comforting and convenient meal." - John Ringor

The Best Hot Pot Restaurants In Chicago

"If you want a quick bite or something to go, but still want hot pot, check out Zhangliang Malatang in Chinatown. This casual Chinese chain specializes in single-serving hot pot, in which everything is cooked in mushroom, pork, or tomato broth in one go before being served. Armed with a plastic bowl, tongs, and your imagination, you can go as plain or as outlandish as you want with their shelves full of bok choy, thin cuts of beef, and fishballs (just know that price is based on weight). Once you’re done building your masterpiece, hand it over to the staff, pick your broth, and your bowl should be ready in minutes." - adrian kane, john ringor

Very delicious food and very much worth it to stop in. The staff member let us use the room in the back because it was so hot for our party of 5 when he didn’t have to, and it made our night so special. We got to have a family style table and chat comfortably while enjoying really yummy hotpot. The ingredients had so many yummy options available and the food came out quickly, which was great for a group that had just spent all day walking around in a heatwave. Thank you so much! (Most of us ordered the bone broth soup base, but my friend also liked the Tom yum base. The price is calculated by weight of the ingredients you pick at the beginning)

Great place for walk-in and good, fast soup. I love the concept of a self-service hot pot, and for the amount of food you can get the price is not bad at all. Great for some food after studying in the library or after a long day hanging out with friends and everyone wants some good grub. Great for solo eating, as a couple, or a group. And great with kids as they can pick and choose what the want without the pressure of making sure to eat their money’s worth!

I planned to visit another place which was promoted but there was a big line so I had to choose some other place to eat. I decided to come here and wasn't disappointed. The staff was very friendly, helped with everything, the selection of the additions for the soups is great and fresh. I myself cannot really handle spicy food so got the 'mildly spicy' soup and could enjoy it without issues. If you are in Chicago I definitely recommend this place.

What a fun dining experience! One of my friends put me on with this restaurant, and I don’t regret it. Such a unique way to make your own ramen, just be mindful of how much you serve yourself because I ended up not finishing my plate. 🍽️

i’ve come here a few times since they opened. the concept is you pick what you want and pay by weight. i love to get the mala dry pot, but i feel like the spice level is not very consistent. they have a sauce bar available as well

The only restaurant in Chicago area that has Malatang as part of their name and yes malatang is their speciality. Here you get to make your own bowl by filling it with protein and veggies and they weigh by the pound (like froyo’s self service lol) to determine the price and they will cook them and bring the dish out. The price is reasonable and you don’t have to overeat because you can choose how much you want. Also, you are not stuck with sharing a meal with another person in a communal pot at the table lol. Malatang the spice soup comes in a broth that is pretty good and you can make it mild or spicy. If you don’t want soup, you can have them stir fry your food and you have delicious Malaxianguo. I left the restaurant hoping to come back again.

It gave me a weird vibe when I first stepped into the restaurant. The server asked if it was our first time, and we said yes then she pointed us to the sign showing how to order instead of explaining and then walked away. We were confused and just did what we think it’s how it supposed to be. After got all the food, came to the counter and chose the soup base, then mixed our dipping sauce. Came back to the table and patiently waited. The food arrived and it was delicious but somehow the vibe was off. Staff was filling the food frequently, the waiter was staring at us (I understand she just wanted to check on us but I just don’t like it though). I will come back for another time to give it a second chance
