Zia Restaurant - Review - Trastevere - Rome - The Infatuation

"There are plenty of trattorias around Trastevere, but when nothing but a fancy tasting menu will do, Zia is your best bet. It’s one of the rare fine dining places where you’ll want to go for fewer courses since the portions are so rich and satisfying. One standout is the tender filet of peppery steak, atop a smooth hazelnut purée and drizzled with sesame vinaigrette, alongside crusty bread served warm with incredible butter. Like other Serious Tasting Menu Restaurants, the atmosphere is exceptionally quiet, and the waitstaff has a knack for appearing right when you need them. Their wine list has an impressive selection of bottles—the last time we were there, we tried a rare 1998 vintage white wine from just outside the city that shockingly paired perfectly with every dish (yes, even that peppery steak)." - Annie Replogle

Zia

"A young chef of undoubted talent is at the helm of this restaurant situated behind the busier, more tourist-frequented streets of Trastevere. The chef in question is Antonio Ziantoni (hence the name of the restaurant), who creates imaginative cuisine that is nonetheless based on solid classic foundations – this gives his dishes structure, solidity and real appeal, as well as full and rounded flavours. One of the most interesting Michelin-starred restaurants in Rome." - Michelin Inspector

423euros for 2 people, for a tasting menu of 7 steps (plus 2 desserts) & wine paring with 1 sparkling, 2 whites, 1 orange and 1 rosso. My first experience in a 1* Michelin star restaurant and a great one. Don't have much to compare with but it was overall an astounding experience. I do have to say only 3 plates had a real "wow" feeling, but all of them were greatly enjoyable.

The food, service, and cleanliness at this Michelin-starred restaurant were all excellent. The place was spotless, and the staff was attentive and friendly. However, while the food was enjoyable and well-prepared, it didn’t blow me away or offer that extraordinary, mind-blowing experience I expect from a Michelin star. It was good, but not special enough to warrant such high praise. Another disappointment was the waitress’s uniform, which looked more like a pajama than anything fitting for a Michelin-star restaurant. I was expecting a more polished, professional look. Additionally, while the restaurant was clean, the design felt very flat and lacked the wow factor. Overall, while the experience was pleasant, I wouldn’t give this restaurant a Michelin star. For the price of 200 euros per person, I expected much more. I would consider this meal worth 80 euros per person at best.

Extremely good 1* restaurant, & a very good value. They acommodated my pescetarian wife perfectly and let us do two different menus that we shared, which is always a huge bonus, getting to try twice as much. Very casual vibe, great music playing (Burial, Four Tet, etc). 6 dishes added to my list of best things I've ever had: the pork belly, the oyster (!!), the sweetbreads, the mackerel, the spiny lobster (!!), the flan for two. $170/person, 24/20 score, priced great ($70 cheaper than EL Ideas, another 1* in Chicago, which was similarly good).

The service was perfect. Couldn’t have been better. The. Her was able to accommodate the dishes to me being pregnant. Very modern look with calm atmosphere. Interesting bites and delicious unique dishes! Highly recommend Also the sommelier really stole the show. She was amazing and every beverage paired perfectly.

I had to say the experience was not pleasant and satisfying. Regarding the food, the chef is kind of fan of bitterness, the only dish I enjoyed was the fish. The tasting menu includes 2 cold desserts and one of them is styled with coffee mainly, which i think not so considerate for a dinner in winner. As for the atmosphere, we had the dinner in the underground with little illumination, I’d call it a good vibe for drinks after dinner, but for dinner? I won’t consider it as romantic and cozy. The service is the least to be mentioned negatively, the serving staff accomplished their responsibilities dutifully but to be honest they’re the most serious people I met in Rome haha

Beautifully presented plates and balance of flavors in each dish, skillfully crafted to bring out unique tastes and textures. The pork belly was perfectly tender and buttery, packed with rich, smokey flavor. The smoked eel added a sophisticated depth to the meal. But the highlight was the vanilla bean Madagascar dessert—a masterpiece of subtle sweetness and rich, aromatic vanilla that ended the meal on a perfect note. Service was also exceptional, with attentive and knowledgeable staff that made us feel welcomed and cared for. Zia is a gem for anyone seeking a refined, flavorful, Michelin star dining experience. Highly recommended!

Our experience was the definition of excellent service. Both Giulia and Valentina were amazing with us, very knowledgeable and experienced on the concept. I would definitely revisit Zia on my next Visit in Rome.
