Fermenter’s Aaron Adams Shares His Favorite Portland Restaurants - Eater Portland

"The place where I like to get food a lot, and this is gonna sound 'Old School Portland,' but I really love going to Zien Hong. It’s always pretty quiet, you can go sit in the corner, and I just love the salt and pepper tofu there. It’s amazing. I love when they have garlic ong choy, and their green beans are insane. It really always hits for me." - Thom Hilton

Google
The portions were decent and everything tasted like it was cooked fresh. The servers were friendly and got our food back to us without a long wait. The only issue I had was they don’t offer combinations dinners/meals. If you want a dinner with General Tso and fried rice you have to pay for each separately. This wouldn’t be a big deal however it’s $18 for General Tso and $15 for fried rice making it $33 for a meal, and to be honest the foods not worth that price. I would expect this price at a higher end restaurant but this is a small hole in the wall restaurant with bad parking.

Google
Food hit the spot! Was absolutely fresh and brought to our table once each dish was ready. Tea was fresh and hot as well. This is what I want when I am craving American Chinese cuisine, this exact experience. Location is decent to be honest. Atmosphere is what one could expect. But the good was fantastic. I will travel all the way from Vancouver time and time again for this exact food!

Google
Ordered take out over the phone yesterday and was heavily disappointed in the food and the cost. 1. Take out packaging was terrible. They put chow mein separate from the veggies and chicken. It was pouring out of the container given in, making a mess of the food. Investment in containers would've solved this. 2. The cut of the veggies and meat was horrendous. Huge pieces of broccoli that was HARD and not cooked well. Huge prices of chicken that could've been cut to bite size. Small fixes that would have made the dish better. 3. The price was not justified. Yes $50 for a lot of food is worth it, but when the food doesn't match up to the flavor then portion size doesn't matter. I wasted so much food because of the taste of the orange chicken. It was a very tough meal to eat. Wouldn't reccomend this place when there's more viable options around.

Google
Best Mongolian beef and pepper salted squid. Could order 3 of them at a time and it still never feels like enough! Lightly battered and perfectly crispy! Could come back every month just for this!

Google
Really great pan-fried noodles! General Tso's was good, not spicy enough for my tastes. Egg drop soup was OK.

Google

Google
I LOVE everything I get here. We always get the spring rolls, fried rice and change the entrees but they're all soooo good. 🥰 I drive from Vancouver just for this!

Yelp
We are so lucky to have this place in our neighborhood. Menu is pretty big and full of your standard Chinese entrees. Service is efficient, friendly and quick. Food is consistent and yummy. Quite a few tables in the back dining room - - and you usually don't have to wait too long for a table. And they are great for takeout too. They are open every day for lunch thru late night dinners. Bathroom is on your way to the dining room. Street parking is limited.

Yelp
Haven't checked in with this humble Chinese food counter in too long! The service was kind, they're open late most nights, and why didn't I notice the superb quality of dishes!? My order included the salt & pepper wings, wontons, lo mein, green beans, and General Tso chicken... all of which were executed gracefully! I've heard they use less oil in their cooking methods, really allows the ingredients to shine. The ambiance is neat & understated, not sure I've ever seen folks dining in... but the two ladies in front picking green beans for their classic stir fry, is a sure mark of their hard work and continued popularity. This will be my main stay for late Chinese to go for sure.

Yelp
Food is good, but a bit pricey. If you're charging $18 per main dish, rice should not be sold separately. We ordered General Tso's Tofu and Black Bean Garlic Beef. Fantastic flavor. I like their tofu, which is why we opted for them. But I'm not about to pay extra for what should come with it. It's been a few years since we've ordered from them. Now I remember why. I will say the staff is always nice from what I recall the last time we picked it up. If you have the money, I say go for it. They're nice & the food is is tasty.

Yelp
Super yummy food, everything we got was fresh and filling! Service is warm and speedy. Location is nice, right off of Sandy. Prices are comparable to alternatives, I'd absolutely return!

Yelp
Zien Hong has the BEST salt and pepper squid. We also enjoyed baby broccoli and chicken, won ton noodle soup, Mongolian beef, and char siu (BBQ) pork. They're open late. I believe they accept their last dine in orders at 10pm, and close at 11pm, on most nights. Love that they serve hot tea and water from the git go. If you love Chinese food, you need to dine at Zien Hong. I read that they've been in business since the 1970s.

Arianna L.

Yelp
Everything I had here tasted amazing, the food came out quick and they are open late!

Ava F.

Yelp
The service was very good. The people were very nice and on the ball if the food was as good as the people in the service I would have been impressed. The salt and pepper squid was below standard as was the crispy duck, which was not crispy at all. Prices were too high, even if the food had been fabulous.

Yelp
Always a hit. Classic spot, with great food. We usually order on Halloween when we're at my in laws since we live further south. Literally can't go wrong when ordering. I suggest trying one thing new every time you go.

Yelp
This is our favorite Chinese spot in Portland! Orange chicken and shrimp lo mein forever!

Yelp
We arrived about 2:45 so we could find a place to park, as parking is limited. Dining room was pretty quiet as it was well after lunchtime. We ordered three different plates, and hot and sour soup was included. Sesame beef, Schwann beef, general Tso's chicken. All three plates were delicious and the soup was not bad. Waitress was very attentive, but not overly. No booths, totally tables and chairs. Priced about right for the three of us not much for ambiance but who cares the food was unbelievable. "We'll be back"

Kevin T.

Yelp
Salt and pepper squid isn't as crispy as in the past but would highly recommend with the green beans
google avatar

Blix S.

Yelp
This spot is pretty dang tasty! We are vegetarian and got the General Zhao's tofu and Chinese broccoli and both are super good. The Chinese broccoli and oyster sauce tastes so fresh, the perfect crispy stalks with a light but present sauce. Definitely recommend giving this spot a try. The portions are generous with average prices.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here. The food was not flavorful. Service was to be expected given its delivery. Can't speak about ambiance because I didn't eat there. Most of the food was fine but nothing spectacular. Only dish that was especially good was General Tso's chicken and Mongolian beef. Probably wouldn't order from here again -- it's too Americanized and the dishes need more flavor.

Yelp
The food is so flavorful amazing and lives up to a high standard the staff is really friendly And the food looks amazing and is served fresh

Yelp
Zein Hong has been a long time favorite of our family for at least a couple of decades. I view I'm giving away my age a bit. For our family, they are known for their fresh garlic green beans. I must say the attention to taste was missing. The green beans were very plain. For that I dinged them a star. The orange chicken was tasty as always. The house fried rice includes, chicken, beef and shrimp. I was upset that there was only ONE shrimp in the box. One more ding for that. Still a family favorite but they are a little off their game. My apologies for not taking photos of the food itself.

Yelp
Favorite Chinese in Portland by far! The menu is extensive and they are professionals! Warm and friendly staff. Love it!

Yelp
It's 10pm on a Sunday night and nothing is open that isn't a bar. We run across this place on Yelp and reluctantly decide to wander in. NOT. DISAPPOINTED. we were immediately greeted and seated, even after 10pm. She was forward and told us we needed to decide quickly (I get we're coming in at the end of the night. The dining room was clean and well lit, we ordered quickly and our food came out very promptly. It was fresh and hot. Absolutely will be back. Great little early/late night spot.

Yelp
Whenever you want to eat good Asian food late night, check this place. This place is so consistent since at least 20 years ago.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Tasty authentic Chinese food. Highly recommend this spot! It's also my go to during the holidays!

Julie N.

Yelp
I came here all the time growing up, also mainly because my mom Tina used to work here. The food and the staff were always so good, kind and always so hard working. My mother passed away from Colon Cancer back in 2018 but I can still feel her glow every time I step foot into this restaurant. The egg flower soup, salted pepper shrimp and squid were (still are) my favorites and it always tasted like 'home' cooked goods. This place is the perfect place to catch up with your loved ones, have a meeting, or even if you're just craving for some good Chinese food.

James R.

Yelp
I ordered two entrees. Both of them were served without rice. Very illregular for any Asian takeout. not cool.

Yelp
2nd time reviewing after my review a year ago, BECAUSE IT WAS SO GOOD! We called in a takeout order around 9pm, and the lady who took the order was very helpful and efficient with clarifying the order and suggesting how much steamed rice we should order to accommodate our party of 3 and the main entrée items we chose. I must share that the orange chicken is THE BEST I've had and comes with perfect balance of sweet-savory sauce, good quality fried chicken and real orange slices. The general tso's chicken came with decadent sauce and beautifully steamed broccoli! The sizzling happy family had a feel-good amount of veggies but many kinds of meats (you can omit pork or whatever you don't want) and the sauce was like comfort-food gravy. All 3 selections: Yummy! I have never dined in to know about that experience, but I know it's a place where you can see the kitchen fulfilling people's dreams of great Chinese/Vietnamese food. THANK YOU, Zien Hong!

Yelp
Another distant Portland memory that has come back to life for me! When I first moved to Portland years ago, I ate here once with friends. Then I moved to a different part of town and forgot about it. Recently, the hubs and I were looking for a back up Chinese restaurant and I remember Zien Hong. The reviews were good and then a coworker gave it a huge thumbs up. So, we headed up Sandy to Zien Hong. If you are expecting a lot of ambiance, this is not your place. It's in a very old building and the interior looks it, old and faded, with gray concrete floors. However, the food is great! And the service is friendly and quick. We started with the egg rolls which are crunchy pieces of heaven served with a very simple sauce that works. I don't know what it is. They are crispy and full of good things. The barbecued pork is the best version I've ever had! Some times bbq pork in a Chinese restaurant is a bit fatty or very sweet, like candied meat. This isn't either, it's lean, flavorful and dee-lish! For entrees, we had the General Tso's chicken, which is crispy, sweet, slightly spicy and amazing. It's served with broccoli, the chicken chunks are huge and good quality meat. We also enjoyed the shrimp in black bean sauce, it tastes both healthy and very tasty. It also includes a lot of veggies, so you can feel good about the fried part of your meal. We recently went back and had the exact same order, except we tried the sesame shrimp. I didn't get a pic, but it was fantastic! Super crispy and delectable, and not too sweet. You need to eat here if you love casual Chinese!!

Yelp
A small unassuming place with a friendly atmosphere. The portions of food on each plate are quite large. The pot stickers arrived fresh hot with a crispy skin and a an ample portion of mild pork inside, served with a very nice sauce. The walnut prawns had quite a generous serving of prawns on a bed of lettuce and fried won tons. They didn't skimp on the mayonnaise as well. I am not used to having this dish with prawns that are fried with such a heavy batter coating thus w the mayonnaise the fish is quite rich. They serve a very pleasant and tasty jasmine tea and service is quite attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Ordered the house special lo mein, ma po tofu, and orange chicken. I feel like for some reason ma po tofu is always made bland every time I order from other restaurants, but Zien Hong does their ma po tofu WELL. Like wow! And their orange chicken is probably one of the best orange chickens we've ever had. We paired it with their lo mein and rice and I was very much satisfied.y you know the food is good when the take out is placed on a cardboard box LOL. Will definitely be coming back

Yelp
Needed at late night food fix inside to escape the cold. Called them and they seat people until 10 PM! Score! Haven't been here in over a decade and this did not disappoint. Loved the house fried rice with beef, chicken, and shrimp. Super flavor in the fried rice. It's the kind of fried rice with that special wok hay! Kids loved the sweet fried orange chicken and ordered the cashew chicken without veggies... it was perfect! The hot tea was free but had to pay for White rice, which used to be free, that was our only complaint. Quick service, and happy staff!

Zeldin Q.

Yelp
The salt and pepper squid was definitely the best part of our meal. Will be back to try other dishes
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
You just have to go!! We have been eating here for 8 years now and not for a single minute have we been disappointed in anything! The service is always always helpful and always friendly! Now is it the nicest building in town.... No but probably the cleanest dining room and facilities that you will probably ever see.
google avatar

Yelp
It was the best place to unwind after a long flight. The food was fantastic! Good portions, great value! Great service!

Avery Z.

Yelp
Very nice authentic restaurant! We were immediately greeted and sat by some friendly gals, they checked up on us a perfect amount of times. Yummy food and very large portions. They had tea to start which is a bonus. Calm environment but fits the theme

Yelp
We were craving going to a Chinese restaurant, but it was late (after 9pm) on a Sunday. Fortunately, Zien Hong was nearby so we stopped in. Super friendly server and a huge menu. We got the kung pow chicken (it was ok - not enough spice though), mongolian beef (good), and garlic green beans (yum). Meal came with hot tea. Good, very standard American Chinese. Hit the spot.
google avatar

Priti K.

Yelp
Amazing food. Hope in the wall place with really good Chinese food. I love the chicken with black bean sauce here, it's super good!
google avatar

Daniel H.

Yelp
My wife and I have been trying out different places in town and decided to give Zien Hong a try,and we are glad we did. Hands down the best Chinese food we have ever eaten. She had the orange, and I went with the Lo-mein. The portions were huge. Service was amazing also. Our waitress, Jennifer, was superb and made our dining experience great.

Linda K.

Yelp
This is a terrible Chinese restaurant. Greasy, salty, sticky. I am visiting Portland from seattle and this is the second Chinese restaurant I've tried. Both are just terrible. We ordered green beans, salt and pepper squid, and pepper beef. The squid was clearly deep fried in very old oil and was over fried to the point that the flesh was like jerky. Green beans were salty in a greasy oily sauce. Pepper beef was oily. Just terrible Asian food!
google avatar

Kannon E.

Yelp
The food is so good and the portions are generous. I love the fact that they are open late night and have an incredible variety of food. I eat meat and my partner is vegetarian and we were both super happy with our orders. This was our first visit and I'm planning on being a regular.
google avatar

Jessie S.

Yelp
Sadly it seems that Portland is losing its Chinese food so finding Zien Hong was a bright spot. With friendly service, good portions and great food you won't be disappointed. We ordered the pan fried chow mein, fried rice and Mongolian beef. Everything was tasty and we would order again.
google avatar

Chloe N.

Yelp
Very good food with reasonable price. Good service and good people just a bit hard on the parking spot but it can be dealt with since the food here is just awesome! Good for family and big party as well.

Brenda B.

Yelp
crispy shrimp and eggs rolls were excellent. Fried rice was good. But the sesame chicken was not really sesame chicken. it had sesame seeds on it but was not crisp. Was just chicken covered with a very spicy sauce- even though it was not marked "spicy". Could not eat it.
google avatar

Sean R.

Yelp
We tried a couple of the house specialty dishes instead of the usual Chinese American choices - shrimp wonton soup and a chicken/eggplant hot stone dish. We weren't impressed with either, the wonton soup had maybe 3 shrimp and no flavor in the broth or noodles. The chicken/eggplant was about 90% eggplant, and after the first few bites the chicken was gone leaving just a mushy tub of eggplant that I didn't even want to finish. They do offer free tea tho. If I ever came back, it would be just to try their Chinese classic dishes, the portions I saw on other tables looked quite big.
google avatar

Barbara D.

Yelp
This place has been there forever and it's hard to understand why. It's not the food. We ordered vegetarian noodle soup and it was inedible, chunks of raw tofu and bland broth. The salad rolls tasted like they had been made days before. Yikes. They must make good drinks or something but don't eat here if you like food esp from Vietnamese side of the menu. Even my wonton soup was under par- no mushrooms and scant barbecue pork. On the positive side, this place was open at 8:30 and many other restaurants, including the one we went to first was closed. So there's some thing nice to say.

Elle 3.

Yelp
Eat at your own risk. Shrimp was not fresh; soft and mealy No other signs of seafood except random pieces of a squid and chopped up fake crabmeat

Marty M.

Yelp
Well my original review was deleted by the restaurant, luckily my memory still exists. The basic takeaway is $16 for a box of soggy tofu with one piece of broccoli split on top. Rice is not included. The "crispy tofu" was obviously fried at a way earlier time and was just drowned in store bought sauce. I rarely go out, I would not spend my money here again. Especially as they try to suppress bad reviews and get their friends or selves to post fake 5 star reviews. Sad..

Bryan T.

Yelp
I was quickly sat down on a Monday after work for dinner and the server brought me some water and a hot pot of tea -- first green flag. Nice, comfortable family-style vibe to the restaurant. I ordered the fish maw soup and the crispy pan fried noodles with beef. The fish maw soup had great flavor and they used real crab meat and other seafood. It was a bit overthickened with flour to my preference, but still tasted good. They also stir in the egg yolk which I haven't seen before, but I liked. The gravy in the pan fried noodles was a bit sweeter than I'm used to, but still tasted great. Great portion size, would love to come back again with a group for larger family style.

Gerard V.

Yelp
I ate at Zien Hong recently and I was very disappointed. I had the pepper salted squid and it was over-cooked, consequently dried out. There was also very little pepper on the squid. I might try the restaurant again, but, maybe not. Gerry

Yelp
With over 400 reviews on Yelp this was a must check out for Chinese food craving one weekday night. We tried to call ahead but couldn't get through to the line. When we showed up there were cars parked outside and the staff was taking orders on the phone non stop - which was a good sign seeing how popular this place was. During Covid you can order via Doordash, call for pickup, or just walk in during the time. Seating is closed at this time. We ended up just walking in and ordering. After ordering we were given a 15 minute wait time so we just walked around the area. By the time we got back the food was already ready and waiting so they probably got it ready even faster than the estimated time. They have an extensive menu of noodles, seafood, meats, etc so it was tough to narrow down what we wanted to get this time but we ended up getting a couple entrees. All in all with tip our order was close to $60 which isn't the cheapest Chinese food BUT the portions were huge and lasted us 3 meals each split between 2 people. | WHAT WE GOT | + Mongolian Beef + Chow Mein with Chicken (Crispy) + Peppered Squid + Spicy Eggplant + Shrimp Fried Rice My faves were definitely the peppered squid and crispy chow mein. They poke holes in the containers to let the entrees air out and not get soggy. The squid has a nice thin and seasoned coating that paired well with the rice and noodles. YUM. The crispy noodles portion is huge and the sauce was delicious and chicken tender so the noodles absorbed all of the goodness. The eggplant and fried rice are also solid options to get as well. I would pass on the Mongolian Beef next time but it packs a nice heat if you like spicy. All in all, the staff does well with how busy it can get and the prices are justified by the portion sizes and tastiness of the meal!

Yelp
The staff is very friendly, all the food came out timely and delicious. This is authentic Chinese dishes. Chow fun, crispy duck. The green beans is our favorite and the salty pepper fish hot and tasty with the sauté onions. Yummy, this will be one of my regular restaurants

Yelp
Delicious Mu Shu Pork and spicy General Tsao's Chicken this visit. . . Just what I was craving. Wish rice was included but got a good interest rate on loan needed to afford this dinner out! Service was meh but typical for Portland. Seems like carry out is preferable to all parties! Gotta a nice fortune with my cookie, so I got that going for me. Try the Beijing Beef it's oniony good. . .

Thomas M.

Yelp
Called in an order for two and was told on the phone 15 minutes give or take. I arrived 2 minutes late and had to wait an additional 40 minutes. I noticed after talking to another customer that they were doing this to more than me. When I got home I noticed that the two clamshells containers had holes melted in the plastic lid, gross! I will never return to this place, they're disrespectful and they serve food in melted
google avatar

Thuy N.

Yelp
Fast order. Easy to order via telephone. Staff is friendly. The best salt and pepper squid in our books yet! Crunchy and flavorful! They cut a hole in the middle of the container to air out the steam to keep the squid fresh and crispy! Bc soggy salt and pepper squid is not our jam! The Vietnamese hot and sour soup was so delicious!!! Nommmm! The catfish in clay pot was very tender and flavorful. Highly recommend!
