Welp, this is what I get for postponing a few hours to write the first review! Never doing that again haha.
I finally went to Ziggy's Roman Café earlier tonight for a 5pm dinner with some family. I've been highly anticipating this new restaurant in Dumbo to open for a while since I follow the owner Igor (as I know him from Employees Only fame so I'm a big fan)! Through social media I read that this family friendly restaurant was already super popular (and they only opened a week ago!) so I knew I wanted to get there early to beat any possible line. I hate lines. We got there around 4:45 PM and there was only one family ahead of us. By the time the restaurant opened at 5 PM, the line was about 30 people deep and I swear there were more kids than adults. I'm not sure if it was a Sunday thing but I'm assuming parents go with their kids right when it opens since they have to get their little ones to bed at a reasonable hour.
I had already researched the menu before I arrived and I knew that for my first visit I needed to have a pizza (Margherita) and the Bucatini all'amatriciana. In addition to those dishes, we also got the Gemma salad, the Carciofi alla Romana (artichokes), and the pesce main dish (Long Island tilefish). I really loved the Gemma salad -- think basically a rich, garlicky Caesar salad but with shaved cauliflower added with the lettuce. So crisp and fresh! The artichokes were not what I expected but they were still good (I was hoping they were going to serve a full artichoke, but instead it was just the hearts served with lemon and mint). The Margherita pizza came out hot and crispy with fresh mozzarella, tomato, and fresh basil. All the kids around me were happily eating the pizza so I knew that was a big hit with them. I ate over half of the pie so it was a big hit with me too. Of course, my favorite my of the evening was the Bucatini All'Amatriciana -- I'm a huge fan of this Roman dish in general and Ziggy's did not disappoint! The thick noodles were perfectly cooked al dente and there was an ample serving of guanciale (pork jowel) on top of the savory sauce. I highly recommend this dish if you are a pasta lover!
The service was very attentive and helpful. Every time we needed something it was brought quickly. Because this restaurant is so popular and brand new, I know there's still a few kinks that need to be worked out in the kitchen. For instance, my main course was served 10-15 minutes after the others because the kitchen was getting backed up. I'm hoping as time goes on and they hit their stride, that will become less of an issue. These are the growing pains of a popular restaurant I guess!
The restaurant is large and spacious with a fully equipped bar with serving area on the first floor to the right when you enter and then two main dining areas, one on the first floor and one on the second floor. It became very apparent that most families with small kids wanted to sit upstairs because of the child play area. I only saw a glimpse of it as I was seated in dining area downstairs, but I did see parents leading their children up to the second floor to play in between meal courses or if parent needed a break. It was really sweet seeing all these families with their young kiddos really enjoying their Sunday meal together. I'm sure this is really what the owners wanted for their neighborhood which is so sweet. Oh and if it wasn't super obvious, the cafe is named after the owner's kid Ziggy! I'm guessing he's a huge fan of dragons given the design. Me too, kid. Me too.
Such a welcomed addition to Dumbo and I can't wait to come back for more bucatini, pizza, and to try more dishes (I'm looking at you, spaghetti al limone)!
Congrats to Igor, Helen, and team Ziggy on this fantastic new enterprise!!!
