Oaxaca's Hotels Know How to Stay Unique

"Set in the heart of Oaxaca City, the beautiful, 500-year-old central square stands as a testament to fiercely protected local culture: when plans emerged in 2002 to open a McDonald’s here, legendary artist Francisco Toledo vowed to stand naked at the site handing out free tamales to remind locals of their ancient heritage; hundreds joined the protest, and city officials ultimately rejected the restaurant." - Mark Fedeli

"Shout ¡Viva México! Mexican Independence is celebrated on the night of September 15 and throughout the day on September 16. On the night of the 15th there are celebrations called "El Grito" (the shout or cry of independence) that take place in the plazas and main squares of cities throughout the country. In Oaxaca people gather in the Zocalo and at 11 pm the governor comes out on the balcony of the Palacio de Gobierno and leads the shout, to which the crowd responds enthusiastically "¡Viva!" after each of his cheers. Following the grito, there are fireworks, and people wave flags, and throw confetti in an enthusiastic display of patriotic feeling."

Tovala Smart Oven Meal Kit Anointed One of Oprah’s Favorite Things | Eater Chicago

"Reopened in September two years after an electrical fire with a slightly new name and a redesigned interior and menu, the revamp has been a success. Inspired by owner Pepe Barajas’s research trip to Oaxaca, the food highlights enchiladas de pollo rostizado con mole coloradito and suadero tacos; the restaurant also now holds a liquor license. The decor more closely resembles Barajas’s other restaurant, La Josie in the West Loop, and while prices are higher than before, I thought it was worth it." - Naomi Waxman

Google
What a charming little plaza in the center of the city. It’s just steps away from the Mercado de Juarez, but there are also vendors here as well. You’ll find a lot of the same products. There are lots of moments with different statues, plaques, etc. you’ll find people walking through or spending time with friends. It’s definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the city center. It’s full vivid colors and a lively spirit!

A great place to spend some time. There are many shops around, great places to eat and things to explore. I also really enjoyed the live music, the dancing, and the vibrant colors.

Nice square for sitting and digesting all the delicious food from the city. Small but good market with souvenirs. Working fountains and pigeons, all in all a good stop

There are two parks next to each other. Walk around, it's safe. Take Alcalá street to Templo Santo Domingo. Lots of shops and places to eat.

Sat at sidewalk cafe for dinner to people watch and preparations/decorations for Day of Dead and enjoyed the ambiance. Great experience.

Amazing town. Beautiful, colorful, friendly, great restaurants, street vendors throughout the day with all kinds of snacks, food, and treats. We got to witness live music almost every day, and ambience was relaxing yet exciting. Very safe place to walk all round the area at any time of the day.

El Dia de Muertos festival is a wonderful, chaotic, loud and unique experience. Definitely a bucket list item!

Google
We visited the park on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The busiest day was Sunday. There was live music playing. And, many families gathered to enjoy the music. There are also several restaurants and vendors on the grounds. Also, there were a few parades that ended in the square... lively performances with beautiful costumes!

Yelp
The heart of the city. It was absolute alive during Dia de Muertos. Vibrant with signature marigolds everywhere. Tons of people - locals and tourists alike - congregating. Parades and live musical performances. Shoe shoes and street food. Adored it.

Yelp
The Zocalo (or the Plaza de la Constitucion) is one of the main plazas in Oaxaca, and if you're visiting, it's definitely worth a visit! With a large fountain in the middle and surrounded on all sides by restaurants and shops, it's great for exploring and people watching! We took a walk around the Zocalo multiple times during our visit to Oaxaca last week, and it felt different each time (at night, there was a DJ and tons of people dancing)!

Yelp
El Zocalo is a very vibrant centrally located area in the historic area of Oaxaca. So many different cultures peoples and performances. It's great to sit at one of the many eateries around the plaza and observe. It's so relaxing. Many street vendors offering everything you could want. Do not miss this cool spot.

Yelp
Hive of Centro Historico. Quiet during the work week, this square comes alive at night, weekends and especially during festivals like Dia de los Muertos. Lots of street vendors in addition to the flashy bars and restaurants. Zocalo has served as a useful landmark to orient me when I walk loops around the area. This is also a perfect area to people watch and practice your Spanish on these lovely, kind people who treat tourists very well.

Yelp
The traditional central plaza of the city of Oaxaca. Closed off to cars, the square is where the grand Cathedral is located; seat of the Archbishop, as well as the Government Palace; the offices of the governor of the State of Oaxaca. I learned that the construction of this plaza dates back to 1529. We sat a restaurant on the plaza watching people, vendors, musicians and art displays all over. It is a fun place to people watch and walk around. Next to the plaza, dancers and street performers were entertaining the crowds that stroll by.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Oaxaca every time come here must go to place is huge so many things to do but most importantly the food is amazing so many choices you have to find the right one though there's a rotisserie chicken place that's fantastic I get like three whole chickens rice beans salsa for like 280 pesos pretty good deal ice cream is pretty good too I like the pecan The mamey is pretty good too if you're going to bye mezcal you need to go deeper in the market away from all the tourist then you get much better pricing on everything as long as you speak Spanish definite place to come when you go to Oaxaca

Yelp
The heart of the city - full of life at its real best. There isn't a place in town where you will witness and experience simpler joys of life without putting in an ounce of effort. Open air restaurants, vendors selling delicious slushies made right in front of you, and that awesome corn on the cob guy unleashing his magic, the groups of mariachi bands serenading you with music from yesteryears and beyond. Hardworking women selling handicrafts, local jewelry, bookmarks, handy back massagers and more. Salsa / tango / merengue dance to live music with couples of all ages. With a backdrop of the beautiful cathedral. Nothing complicated. Simply - a good life.

Yelp
Every city or town has a so called "zocalo" which means main square. The one in Oaxaca is particularly nice because it is next to the big cathedral and of course close to everything. There are some nice bars and restaurants and a open air theatre in the middle were the city orquesta often plays. There is always something to do here, music, theatre or other activities such as an ice skating ring and a huge xmas tree with Christmas. On the 23rd of December there is the radish festival "noche de rábanos" which is a beautiful tradition that has been going on for over 100 years.

Yelp
I love the Zocalo. The first time I was in Oaxaca, we arrived very early in the morning and desperately needed coffee. We went to one of the arcade restaurants/cafes on the zocalo and sat for a while really enjoying the early morning sunshine and soaking up our surroundings. We had a wonderful clear view of the plaza. The next day, we checked out the market they'd set up. This past time when I visited, the entire Zocalo had been commandeered by both protestors and vendors, so there were blue tarps everywhere and you couldn't see clear across the square, nor walk easily from one side to the other. No disrespect to the protestors or the vendors. It just wasn't as visually appealing. But, Oaxaca is so beautiful, you can't really hide the beauty.
