Nice busy plaza in the evening, lots of trees and shaded so can hang during the day, not sure if weekly but there was lots of indigenous communities members I assume from nearby towns selling lots of traditional clothes, tourist trinkets, foods etc.
The small carts with the snacks like esquites, marquesitas that pop up in the evening are fine. However I HIGHLY recommend not eating at the bigger food cart restaurants with the small plastic sit down chairs and tables (the ones that sell plates of allambre's, burritos, tlayudas etc) - LITERALLY some of the worse tasting food I ate in Mexico and what's worse is they'll seem to make up a ridiculous price for what is a super cheap and basic street food, which you could instead for that price go to a nice restaurant in town - HUGE TOURIST TRAP - don't be fooled by locals or Mexican tourist dining there. (Located right near restaurant mayordomo)
Also saw some cool live bands and dancers in different attires playing and marching from the Santo Domingo to zocalo Friday afternoon and evening so worth hanging around on weekends to maybe get a taste of this, was very cool.
