I am a bit conflicted with this restaurant and it has everything to do with the appetizers. I'll start off by saying that the service was EXCELLENT, the first course and the main courses were very tasty and their special cocktails were delicious. The appetizer, however,... I'll get to that later.
Between the three of us we shared the Lamb dish (Pasture) as well as the Tamal and Chile Relleno and it was more than enough to fill us. The lamb was seasoned so well and when the polenta it was laid on had the juices, it made for the perfect bite. The shared veggies that comes with main courses was probably our favorite part of the meal. A very fun idea.
The Chile Relleno was just so perfect. The pepper is stuffed with a mushroom paste and no cheese. As someone who is very lactose, this was such a pleasant surprise. But that mole sauce--absolutely amazing. A good amount of heat and smoky flavour. I highly recommend the dish.
Another recommendation is the duck confit salad. Well balanced between the salty confit, light dressing, and the slightly bitter watercress. It's also a good size to share with others if you only want a small portion.
For the appetizers we ordered the 'Kennebec Papas Fritas' and 'Tortillas with Avocado Butter's.
For the Papas Fritas--just call it what it is: thinly sliced potato chips with a pesto sauce drizzle. The big problem is that it's so out of place with the rest of the meal. Nothing else we ate complemented it (even the cocktails). Technique aside, it was just a bowl of chips.
Tortilla Maize Cakes. It's a tortilla. A very very good tortilla (and I highly recommend this dish). But the avocado butter?? It's guacamole. They didn't even intend to make this into a whipped avocado butter or a soft but smooth butter spread. It has all the chunks of guacamole.
The way these appetizers were described set a certain expectation that left us kind of speechless. We were convinced that the menu description had to be satire--otherwise it comes off as pretentious.
The worst part was that the appetizers colored our expectations for the rest of the meal. I almost wished we skipped the appetizers entirely since we were then worried about what the rest of our orders were going to actually be. (Images attached are not representations of portion sizes. We had eaten a good amount of it prior)
But I'll round up the review to 4-stars since the main courses were tasty, service was excellent, and the kitchen was fast.
