Great Places in Spokane to Eat and Drink

"Jenn and Aaron Hesseltine took their combined 35 years experience in the restaurant industry and decided to shove it between two pieces of freshly baked bread. When asked what makes their sandwiches so good, they say there’s no real secret, they just overhauled every element — either sourcing the best products from local vendors or making them right in house. That means hand-breading chicken and pork cutlets, chopping down veg for their cherry pepper aioli, and roasting beef daily for their Italian beef dip. You can taste the difference." - Kris Kilduff

I absolutely adore this place. Best smash burgers ever! Their food is well seasoned, generous portions, and a great variety of burgers and sandwiches. My forever favorite here is the Hot Mess (pictured) a smash burger with an egg on it. It is fantastically messy! The Pickle Pasta is my favorite side here. There are plenty of tables and plenty of parking. Staff has always been friendly and accommodating. There's soda, and also beer and selzters. Wait times are decently quick for how busy they are especially!

Google
Epic. I got two Bun Jovis. Reasonably priced but tasty burgers. The bun doesn’t collapse. The surface area of the lettuce gives it a nice volume without sacrificing the crunch factor. The smash burger was correctly smashed (not into a thin slice of meat) - thin enough to develop a nice sear but thick enough to maintain juiciness. The toasted bun doesn’t get soggy due to the ordering of toppings and condiments.

Google
I got the Island Style Pulled Pork sandwich and it was AMAZING. Generally I am wary of pulled pork as it has globs of fat that will interrupt the sandwich experience, the staff told me they hand pull the pork. In doing so they end up removing all the fat from the meat leaving just a delicious sandwich to be had. Absolutely will be returning!

This place is hopping! We have attempted to eat here a few times and it was pretty busy and they are only open to 3pm. It has limited seating so my suggestion is to go early or order for pickup! We ordered the Hot Mess burger, the smaller order of garlic tots and the Dirty Bird sandwich. We loved the garlic tots with the garlic aioli, just wished there was a tad more for the $7.95 price tag. The Dirty Bird had a delicious pork cutlet on yummy sub bread that wasn't too crunchy or too chewy. The star for us was the Hot Mess! Perfectly cooked runny egg on top of two smash patties with shaved ham, American cheese and mayo! Because it was our first time, we left the Booeys hot sauce on the side for dipping. I'm glad we did cuz the burger flavor was yummy and rich on its own!! My husband said it was his new favorite Spokane burger! Everyone on staff was welcoming and helpful!! Definitely try them out!! 😁

Google
Spokane loves their local sandwich shops, and Zozo's definitely stands out as one of the better ones. Ingredients are as fresh as you can get, with pillow-soft breads--crisped up on the griddle when called for--and savory sides for lunch. My mid-western Wifey was thrilled to find a pork cutlet sammie, and raved about it with every bite. Don't sleep on their breakfast BLT. It was both light, and filling, and more than enough for a hearty appetite. And, these guys know their soups. The Broccoli Cheddar was gloriously cheeeeesy, and could be a fine lunch on it's own with one of their salads. Folks in there were friendly, even though very busy. This is a great lunch spot...

Google
Friendly staff with great recommendations. We had the turkey club and the Reuben. Both sandwiches were great. I love the bread. The fries are awesome!

Google
Wonderful hole in the wall sandwich shop. Best fries we've had in years, fresh and hot, perfectly cooked and seasoned. We had the pastrami and the Italian beef. Both were superb and generous. A bit pricey for what it is, but worth every cent. I fully intend to try every sandwich.

Yelp
My first visit was so great I had to return. First time around I got their Monroe St Dip?, could only eat half, and it reheated perfectly when I had it for lunch the next day! This time I had the Fattie Maddie, and it was so good! A cold sandwich, stacked with several meats, pickles, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and their special sauce. I'm posting a pic for that one. Hubby got a Zozo's Cheesteak and enjoyed it very much. He also ordered the Chili Tots, most of which came home to be a side for dinner. One of the things I love about this place is the fact what you order is what you get. I don't have large stomach space, so adding sides is wasting food. And, check out the artwork! It's for sale, from a Pickle Ball to King Kong in Spokane, and whimsical paintings of trash pandas. Parking is shaded, like the old A&W, or Sonic, staff is friendly, customers are friendly, location is excellent.

Yelp
Took my mom and daughter here on Friday for lunch before a movie. The food would be a 4.5 Now I got a Cubano, and I wanted cheddar instead of Swiss. Everything is made fresh, so a little bit of a wait. They bring out my mom and daughters food and I was told the cook missed the subbing the cheese. 15 mins later I got my sandwich. So my guests were done eating and I'm left with my Sandwich to eat as they stare at me while it's time to go to movie. Bill was $50 and I ate half really fast and other half Togo. So food was great but did not get to experience it really, and that ruined for me. I might be back but, it irritated me and they didn't even apologize. That's why I leave 2 stars.

Yelp
ZoZos is a delectable delight in Spokane's culinary scene! I've visited a couple of times, and each visit leaves me unable to snap a photo because the food is just too irresistible! The service is top-notch, and despite being consistently busy, the wait times are just right--around 6-9 minutes. You order upon arrival, receive a number, choose a table, and voila! Your food arrives promptly. Last time, I indulged in the buffalo chicken fries, and oh my goodness, they were phenomenal! Every last fry vanished in no time--the buffalo sauce was simply divine. The smash burger is also a winner; it comes with two patties by default, which is a nice touch. Sometimes, I even find myself craving a second burger! ZoZos is a fantastic lunch spot with consistent staff and a diverse selection of beverages. Highly recommended! It reminds me of a diner nice inside.

Yelp
I just had the most amazing French dip sandwich from Zozo's! I've driven by it a million times, but finally decided to give it a try and ordered Uber Eats to work today. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! It might just be the best French dip I've ever had (okay, maybe not in the world, but definitely in my book!). My coworker got the turkey club and it was massive! Piled high with turkey, bacon, avocado, Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato, all on the most delicious hoagie bun ever. And the grilled cheese was surprisingly good too - they even said it could compete with Five Guys (which is saying a lot, since no one has ever been able to beat Five Guys' grilled cheese before!). I'm already planning my next visit to Zozo's to try either the Ruben or the pastrami sandwich - decisions, decisions! If you're a fan of French dip, you have to give Zozo's a try - it might just become your new favorite spot too!

Yelp
I introduced my dad to this establishment today and we both enjoyed our meals. We started off with the White Chicken Chili which was outstanding. We followed up with the OG Smashburger and a Ruebano sandwich. Dad liked his burger and I really enjoyed the differently created Ruebano. A very good mix between a cubano and Rueben sandwiches. The staff were friendly and on this visit the dining area was also kept very clean, just as it was on the last visit. One other note, I believe this may have been an A&W at some point in the buildings history. This is important as the covered parking area still exists. This is particularly nice during heavy rain or snow events.

Yelp
If you haven't tried Zozo's Sandwich House (on Monroe and Jackson, in the old Azar's restaurant), I highly recommend. Met my Dad there today for our monthly lunch and we both left full and happy. There were so many things we wanted to try, it took us some time to whittle it down and finally choose. I ended up going with their Turkey Club (roasted turkey, bacon, avocado, cheddar, swiss, shreddy lettuce, tomato, and ranch. Served on a freshly baked hoagie roll) and a cup of one of the soups of the day, Asparagus Bisque. The sandwich was so big, I could only eat 1/4 of it and the cup of soup. My Dad decided on their Filthy Fries (topped with smash patties, american cheese, grilled onion, chopped pickles, and zo sauce). He said the hamburger patty was delicious and the fries were crispy. I also brought home a chicken and pork cutlet sandwich for the boyfriend. I don't have pictures of those, but they're quite large. He's been looking forward to trying these since he saw them on the menu. So I just picked up one of each. Everyone there was really nice and welcoming.

Yelp
Called in an order & picked up. The staff was friendly & prompt even with a line of customers out the door. Ample parking in what appears to be an old drive in. I love the color scheme for the ambience they chose, it feels like the 70's. I ordered the Fattie Maddie & the Wise guy cold sandwiches both on GF bread. These sandwiches are pilled high with quality meats, cheeses, vegs and condiments. I love the blue and white deli paper the sandwiches are wrapped in. My only critique is the GF bread is dense, not the greatest, not the worst. The sandwiches were $14.95-$15.95 with GF up charge. I would love if they consider another GF bread brand to carry.

Yelp
This is our first visit and we were really good place and we will be back. My husband had the Bun Jovi Smash Burger and he said it was really good. I had the Island style roast pork and it was very good. We shared a large tots and they were super crispy but in a great way. The service was great and food came out quickly and fresh. The place is clean and casual atmosphere. Highly recommend. The menu has something for everyone including a kids meal.

Yelp
My brother in law (Spokane legend aka Big Drip) has been telling me about this place for months. We drove all the way from Walla Walla to celebrate Easter and partake in ZoZo's. I believe the OG smash burger is what made Jesus rise from the grave! The breakfast tots were literally straight from Heaven. And the deep fried pickles were as surprising as finding an Easter egg filled with $20. ZoZo's is yummy yummy.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
The food and service was wonderful! I have a dairy allergy and the bread is vegan and they made sure I had no issues with my sandwich! We also had tots (not pictured) that were to die for!!
google avatar

Cindy D.

Yelp
I've been here 3times now and each time I ordered different sandwiches and everyone was great! Today I had the Caesar Sammie and the potato salad. It's the best sandwich shop in Spokane.
google avatar

Kipp J.

Yelp
Excellent!!! The Philly was great and the bread was outstanding. Wife got the Mother Clucker, and she couldn't put it down.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Stopped in on my way through Spokane, and honestly this is one of the best sandwiches of my life! Everything is homemade, made with care and attention, and delicious. I had the Uncle Paulie, which is turkey, salami, mortadella, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, onion, giardiniera, & mayo on a sub roll. At $12.95 for a whole Sandwich, I thought the price might be a little steep. But it turns out, the sandwich was big enough for two meals. I'll be back when I'm in the area!
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
Had the smash burger fries, pickles onions& sauce. WOW not over powered in salt or any other ingredients. Easy best local vibe! And you know I shop locally.
google avatar

Reannan K.

Yelp
A great spot with a variety of options. Several gluten free choices. Easy to get to and parking available. Flavorful, quick and strong attention to detail. Thank you so much!
google avatar

Ajeanne D.

Yelp
This place is heavens sent. The flavor with the different meat combinations. I happen to dine as well have food delivered. The staff is nice and fun as well as the dashers who drop the food off. It gives me good feel vibes
google avatar

Gregory G B.

Yelp
Since I was in the areaI decided to give Azars's replacement a shot. I was a bit early and wound up the second customer. I ordered a French Dip with onions and a Italian Roast Pork with peppers. Threw an order of garlic tots and fries into the mix. Upon returning home I discovered my Roast Pork was a cold turkey sandwich and my fries and tots were soggy and stone cold. We ate the sandwiches and they were ok. But the poor attention to items ordered and the timing of service pretty much assures I won't be back.
google avatar

Peter B.

Yelp
Came for breakfast. OMG! So good! We had the Hoy Mess and Biscuits and Gravy. All home made. Absolutely the best I've had! Service was very good. The owners are friendly and attentive. The place seems to be an old A&W . It is clean and nicely decorated with locals finger paintings - cool!!! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Wayne G.

Yelp
Amazing. I know it's a sandwich shop, but it is soooooo good. The bread is fresh. The ingredients are fresh. We had the dirty bird - chicken cutlets with roasted peppers and arugula. The other dish - Tater tots/mushroom gravy and an egg was just some of the best comfort food I've ever had. Locally owned. It's well worth the stop.

Yelp
Have been here a few times, always great food and great service. Mom and pop type of place. #Support local.
google avatar

Darik N.

Yelp
Fantastic food, fantastic soups, fantastic place and people. Zozo's is one of my favorite places to have lunch in the Spokane area.
google avatar

Faran S.

Yelp
Let me tell you about this cheesesteak, it was one of the very best I've ever had. All of the flavors were there and their in house cheese sauce was very good and the bread wasn't soggy at all. I'm telling you once again you need to come and try our zozo's sandwiches here in Spokane you will not regret it and they are very filling.
google avatar

Kaitlin D.

Yelp
I've been here about 6 times and I've had the best sandwiches ever but other times the worst so that is why I give 3 stars, the inconsistencies make this place 3 stars. The price point is fair since they use quality ingredients, you'd spend the same at subway basically. The bread here is what sets them apart from other places, literally crunchy and fresh on the outside and soft on the inside, I crave this bread!!! I love their French dip, their sandwiches are always stuffed and I usually have lunch for 2 days with 1 sandwich. This time I ordered pick up and arrived 10 mins after the scheduled pick up time, still waited 10 minutes in line when picking up my order that was sitting on the counter because they had 1 person helping the entire line of dine in orders and to go orders.... I got the $9.95 Tuesday "special" for smash burgers (only valid on the original or bun Jovi). I got the bun Jovi and paid an additional $1 for fries as my side and the burger was small and didn't have much flavor, the bun was soggy, lettuce was warm and soggy, and the onions were hard to bite through so I took them off. Worst burger I've tried anywhere honestly and the special isn't a special because that burger is $7.95 on the menu and fries are just over $3 for a small so I don't like the advertising on that special since there really isn't a special lol I paid $10.95 for the fries and burger during that special. I'm glad I didn't try the burger the first time I tried this place otherwise I would've given a lower rating here. I just don't like the inconsistency of every other visit and long wait times for picking up orders placed via phone.
google avatar

Michele G.

Yelp
First time trying zozos and let me tell you it didn't disappoint by any means. I got the island roasted pork sandwich and it was delicious. Every bite I took was something good. The restaurant was small on the inside but very cozy. The staff was very nice. Our wait for our food was lbt bad with the place being very busy for lunch. If you haven't been there I say go check it out well worth it
google avatar

Myron P.

Yelp
Great lunch stop. Italian Beef sandwich, very delicious. The place was busy and service was fast and accurate. Cool artwork from local artists on the walls.
google avatar

Derek W.

Yelp
Stopped into checkout the place today. I got the Fattie Maddie and the Cray-zo Cuban. Both sandwiches were great! Definitely will be going back again to try more on the menu! Staff was great and very friendly right when you walked in.

Rebecca A.

Yelp
Literally the best burger I've had in years. I had the Bun Jovi smash burger, I highly recommend! Zozo's is my favorite new restaurant in Spokane.
google avatar

Mykalah P.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in Spokane! Along with fantastic service and a really great atmosphere!

Karina H.

Yelp
Omg, seriously so good. My husband and I were talking about how this reminds us of this little sandwich shop that used to be right by our college when we lived in Bozeman, Montana... we will definitely be back again, and again and again!! I wish I took a picture, but I will next time. The service is great, the food is amazing, and I especially loved all the paintings on the walls, the spider riding a horse... hilarious! I also loved the raccoon driving into the trash... honestly all great!

Kai W.

Yelp
The building is overall fairly accessible, much more than most small businesses. There is a ramp and ample space as long as they aren't super busy. It's small so weekends can be a bit crowded. The service is pretty quick even when they are busy. The food is amazing. The flavors come through and are well balanced. Everything has great texture as well. This is somewhere I know I'll be back to as often as possible The owner is also a very kindhearted and loving woman, I'm glad to support her business when I can.

Harry Q.

Yelp
Besides the central convenient location & parking + Good Karma of the previous restaurant , Zozo's was a disappointment :( Philly Cheese Steak was "if "average"without any abundance of meat and a slight smell of cheese... Bunch of nothing stuck in the middle of a very chewy bread. The Staff: Not so friendly or happy to feed hungry customers as your Hosts. Too sad ,too bad... Great Original Artwork to keep you company meanwhile!

Malinda W.

Yelp
Zozo's is literally my new favorite lunch spot. The garlic fries are incredible. I've never been disappointed in a sandwich here. The pickle pasta salad is addicting. The staff are all super nice and friendly. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Judy B.

Yelp
We love the food and energy! Our 6-year-old grandson said it was the best Mac and Cheese ever. He wanted to lick his bowl! My made-to order Cob Salad was wonderful, and my husband's sandwich once again was so filling we took half home for lunch tomorrow. We drive from Liberty Lake to have lunch whenever we can!
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
I've been eager to try this place since it has replaced Azars cafe and I could finally get in here since it wasn't super busy. Not huge fan and I don't see what all the raving reviews are about. Yes the sandwich was good, but that's it. No fries, no pickle etc. Plan on spending at least an additional $5 for the sides. Very easy for a $13 sandwich to turn into a $20 meal. No real service here since the only thing was brought to me was my sandwich and nobody checked back to see how it was. Also, I had to go get my water myself. I think I'll be skipping this place next time I'm looking for lunch options.
google avatar

Hope L.

Yelp
This little spot on Monroe is a gem! The food was delicious & the service was fantastic. Highly recommend if you're looking for a cute little sandwich shop!
google avatar

Gavin C.

Yelp
I ordered a Fattie Maddie, Super Novah and Philly Fries. The Fattie Maddie was a fairly basic sub with great bread, fresh thinly sliced meat good cheese and a reasonable amount of vegetables. It is basic but a really good sub. The Philly Fries were a perfect ratio of topping to fries. Neither dry nor soggy The Super Novah was a very good mix of flavors. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Macon P.

Yelp
Traveled in from Chicago, looking for a quick bite and stumbled upon this Gem. Had the smash burger and fries and it rated better than a lot of Chicago restaurants. Customer service is great! Nice job Zozo's! I'll be back! And spreading the word on the good eats!
google avatar

Alana P.

Yelp
We visited this place again today & it was just as delicious as I remembered it to be. The owner took my first review into consideration & removed the railing right in front of the door & left a rail off to the side for accessibility use. Great place to eat!

Gea P.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the experience and thought The Wise Guy sandwich is great! I'm going to let people know that's a great spot to go
google avatar

Jubilee P.

Yelp
such great food! w had the fries, kevin bacon, hot chick and a bowl of the soup (navy bean and ham)! it was all very delicious- the soup was very well seasoned and the smash burger was perfectly flat n crispy. prices are great too, will def be back for the soup flight!
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
Amazing service and even better food. Can't wait to try every item on the menu. The DirtyBird was legit and next time I hear the trick is "garlic aioli".
google avatar

Jill T.

Yelp
Best sandwich we've had in the Spokane/CDA area!!!! Service was amazing and fast, and the fries were so perfect as were the sandwiches. Great atmosphere - we cannot wait to go back! Lots of options for sandwiches salads and sides. So excellent!

Stephanie C.

Yelp
This place is a must! Everything made fresh and packed with flavor! Staff is always amazing and kind.

Michele L.

Yelp
I was disappointed in my experience. I ordered a roast beef sandwich with cheddar and mayo and was told that because I was modifying the ingredients (literally leaving every ingredient listed on the menu off of my sandwich except for the roast beef, and substituting the cheese for cheddar) there would be a charge. The menu price was $13.99. After the modification charge, my sandwich was almost $19.00!!! Next time I'll drive downtown to Dominis. Most restaurants add charges when you add ingredients, not when you leave them off.

Tommy A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. The cold sandwiches travel very well and the prices are good for the portions. Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a great sandwich at a reasonable price!

Mandy W.

Yelp
Took one of my kiddos for dinner and we had a great experience! I got the Fancy Nancy, a chicken cutlet sandwich with roasted red peppers, moz, and some other delicious toppings. Kiddo had a smash burger with bacon and some fries. He's 14 and hard to please, but his face lit up when he started eating, so you know it was good. A regular sized basket of fries was enough to split. The portion size of my sandwich was big enough that I took half home, where it was eaten by my husband who wished he had more. We'll definitely be back!

Monica N.

Yelp
A little pricey but really great sandwich! Figured it was going to be good with the number of cars in the lot!

Rick C.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was better. I highly recommend this for anybody who needs a very fast lunch restaurant was busy. We ordered our food and it was delivered within five minutes

Jason T.

Yelp
We are from out of town visiting a family member and needed to get lunch. Did some review and went for lunch. Food is fantastic and service outstanding. Cool vibe on the location as well. Definitely recommend getting food here and I will recommend to anyone who asks.

Richard R.

Yelp
Save your money. Go to subway or some other sandwich shop and get a real sandwich. French fries were cold and some runny sauce on the fries.
