As a couple who enjoys dining in Michelin-recommended restaurants during our travels, we were excited to try Zuem Ysehuet, but sadly, it did not live up to expectations. In 2024 alone, we dined at nearly 20 Michelin establishments, ranging from recommended restaurants to 1- and 2-star experiences, so we have a solid benchmark. Unfortunately, this restaurant fell short on nearly every front, especially given the price point of over €180 for a couple.
This price is quite high especially if taking into consideration that after reading my review (sent by email to the restaurant prior to this post), the restaurant claimed to be a “neighborhood restaurant”.
We opted for the 5-course menu, which we review below in detail:
Pre-Starter: consisted of a spinach-based falafel ball, beetroot cream, and artichoke soup. The soup was decent but served lukewarm. The beetroot cream was enjoyable, but the falafel was uninspired and bland.
Starter: Foie gras with coco bread and celery salad. The foie gras was good but nothing special. The celery salad, however, was overwhelmingly salty. We brought this up with the waiter, who merely apologized.
Fish Course: Scallops with pumpkin. This was the only dish that impressed us and felt worthy of a Michelin recommendation. It was well-balanced and flavorful.
Main Course: Pork with asparagus and more. The plates arrived cold, and after we returned them, they were reheated but served in the same uninspiring state. The pork was below ordinary, and the asparagus, like the salad, was excessively salty.
Cheese Course: This was fine but nothing memorable.
Dessert: Chocolate with passion fruit. This was the most disappointing course. It appeared as though the kitchen was short on portions, as we each received only half a dish compared to what others seemed to be served. The dessert lacked flavor, and my wife had only one bite. The waiter inquired why, but after she explained, he simply apologized again without offering a resolution.
Overall decor and appearance: the dishes served in a very nice way. The restaurant is simply decorated. The tables were with some significant cup bottom stains and very simple placemats. One of the plates of the main course even had a crack.
Bottom Line: While the scallops and cheese course were passable, the rest of the meal failed to meet even the minimal standards we expect from a Michelin-recommended restaurant. The service, while polite, did nothing to remedy the issues, and the overall experience left us feeling that our money would have been better spent elsewhere. Not recommended.
