Beletage Zum Schwarzen Kameel

"The setting alone is a huge draw: the first floor of a 1901 Jugendstil building in a super-central location. The interior decor is at once elegant yet cosy, and the front-of-house team is experienced and pleasingly laid back, while operating in the classical style, like a well-oiled machine. And, of course, there is the exceptional food: a celebration of Viennese classics, elevated by creative seasonal additions. There is a well-curated à la carte selection with a set menu option – diners are spoilt for choice, with dishes such as the rustic hand-carved ham being just as tempting as the oven-baked pike-perch with a ginger and citrus butter." - Michelin Inspector

"Zum Schwarzen Kameel's unusual moniker, which means At the Black Camel, grabs your attention. It’s a play on the name of founder Johan Baptist Cameel, who opened the establishment back in 1618. Appointed a spice purveyor to the Hapsburg court in 1825, Zum Schwarzen Kameel is today a restaurant, with a separate delicatessen that makes good sandwiches and a gourmet shop selling fine cheeses and wines. The Kameel interior is justly famous as well, with a wood-paneled art nouveau dining room that (of course) postdates the era when Beethoven frequented the restaurant. The area around its Bognergasse location is now a stone-paved pedestrian zone with luxury shops, which makes the Kameel’s front terrace a delightful place to stop for a drink or meal."

"Owner Peter Friese has headed this Viennese institution since 1977 but Kameel (as it’s affectionately known) has been around for almost four centuries. Kameel remains “one of the most egalitarian places in Vienna”, says Friese. “Here a president can sit next to a labourer.” The restaurant had a makeover in 1901 and today is a wonderful example of art nouveau décor, with its tiled walls, hanging half-moon lamps and wood panelling."

Nice pastry and sandwiches..everything was delicious..but...... I hate being served a chipped cup for my tea. When I want to ask for the waiter to change my cup, he was no longer around and kept moving to other part of the cafe. It's not nice to have to be super anxious about where you put your lips every time you want to drink your tea. I thought, that it should be a standard, at least, for a high-end cafe like this to NOT serve their customer with chipped cup however small it is.

This spot came highly recommended by a local, and we spotted a Michelin Bib Gourmand sign in the back window—pretty impressive! My partner and I visited this morning, and it delivered. The ambiance is classy, like a refined café, nestled in a busy, upscale part of town with a sophisticated buzz. We had two courses, each item in order of preference: Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese on Bread – Silky salmon, creamy spread, and a standout start. Egg with Mayo on Bread – Simple yet tasty, with a nice richness. Shrimp Open-Faced Sandwich – Fresh and good, though the bread stole some of the show. (Note: The bread is softer and white-floured, more refined than Buffet Trzesniewski’s.) Austrian Boiled Beef Tafelspitz – Excellent with horseradish, a hearty highlight. Vegetarian Pasta – Great texture, though the name escapes me—still enjoyable. Overall, it’s a solid pick with a polished vibe and great flavors. Worth a stop if you’re in the area!

Google
Historic cafe that’s relevant and centre of attention to this day. Oysters, schnitzel were divine, as was the vibe and buzz in the middle of Vienna with next to stage seats to the city’s heart. Abigail who served us was also exceptional.

Super friendly service and absolutely amazing Schnitzel! I tried several good places for Schnitzel during my stay, but this one was by far the most delicious. Highly recommended!

An institution in Vienna, a must to visit and people watch the day away. The service is great, the food greater and the atmosphere one to take in, absolutely loved our time here, if you can get a seat, take it and enjoy the pleasures of the past.

Google
A delightful historic restaurant in the heart of Vienna. We sat inside the restaurant as the terrace was full at lunchtime. It was a welcome air con room on a hot day, with beautiful crisp white linen tables laid for lunch. The white asparagus soup with a hint of lobster was delicious. I ordered the shrimp cocktail which was mouthwatering and a large portion of shrimp. The waiter was very friendly ( some are quite stern in Vienna) recommending wine to accompany my husband’s fish platter. Beautiful art nouveau lamps wall tiles and friezes decorate this very popular restaurant. If you haven’t had enough of Zum Schwarzen Kameel you can visit their in-house deli shop and take home more goodies!

Google
can’t quite understand the high rating. The food was average, and the steak I ordered was so tough it couldn’t even be cut with a knife. On the positive side, the staff were very helpful and cheerful, which made the overall experience more pleasant. Despite the food, I would still recommend it for the excellent service.

Google
It’s basically a bar offering mostly drinks as well as food. We tried the schnitzel (20€ for 1 pc, 26€ for 2 pcs as you see in the picture). Price for two people with an alcoholic drink, water and a side potato (this last one I don’t know how, but it was terrible btw) was 50€ in total.

Yelp
We came here for dinner after work and got seated inside since it was freezing outside. The waiters were friendly, but a bit slow. 2/5 Schnitzel - very bland. It needed some sauce and maybe the potato salad was supposed to be the sauce but it needed a mayo or tartar sauce or something. Was a little disappointing 4/5 Desserts - loved the many options of desserts in the glass, there's both sweet and savory desserts. I suppose this is normal of Viennese/austrian food to taste this way. Not a huge fan.

Yelp
Outstanding service (Shout out to Richie!) We sat on the heated patio on a very rainy day, but the heaters kept it comfortable and there were lap blankets, too. I popped into the inside bakery for some small sandwiches and desserts selection and had them add it to my order by giving our servers's name. We had coffees, also. This was one of the highlights of our visit, honestly and loved it for ambiance and high-quality of their treats. The cheese sandwich with salt-topped bun was the best bite we had in 10 days all over Germany and Austria. The dessert (chocolate with raspberries) was outstanding, especially with my cappuccino. Also: it's cigar-friendly! My husband appreciated that, even though he didn't have a cigar. Good to know for future reference. Also want to add: we don't know it was an awesome place to visit for the history of it. We only researched after we were home and even more grateful to have popped in for a little visit on our trip.

Yelp
Beautiful cafe near my hotel. My Austrian friends warned me about the grumpy waiter syndrome in Vienna and this guy won the prize. So unnecessarily unpleasant. I had a nice light breakfast too bad for the attitude. It's a beautiful place. Was lively at night when I walked by.

Yelp
Visited for lunch, and although the food was nothing special, it was good and the service outstanding (as opposed to what I was expecting from some of the reviews. Got a table fast, and my waiter was prompt and friendly. Had the beef consommé soup and ham with horseradish and bread. The soup was just average but the ham was really good. Nice place with beautiful outdoor seating. I would do it again.

Yelp
Please do not eat here as the wait staff are racist. I (person of color) went with my friend (white) for breakfast, about 45 minutes after opening. As with any European restaurant that offers outdoor seating, we asked if we could sit anywhere, in which we were told yes. After sitting, we waited for about 8 minutes and were not provided menus. The restaurant was not busy when we arrived, since it was so early. There were about 3 other tables already there. My friend got up to grab a menu. We noticed that people who arrived after us were seated and provided menus. About a minute after grabbing the menu, the waiter came by to ask her if we needed a second menu. When we were ready to order, I waived at the guy who was standing next to our table and can see us clearly, and we were ignored. Again, other tables who had arrived after us were seated, provided menus, and had their orders taken. We left after 15 minutes of waiting. After reading other 1 and 2 star reviews, there are other people with similar experiences. Notice that the restaurant is not disagreeing with any of the reviews. Typically, restaurants can comment on reviews, apologizing and saying that they will utilize the feedback for future improvement. There is not one comment from the restaurant for this purpose. If this does not persuade you to not eat here, then consider that the prices might be very expensive for a basket of bread. There are other places in the area, Cafe Mozart, Segafredo, etc, with significantly better prices and just as delicious (not that we would know what the food here tastes like as we were never served). If you are still reading and thinking this is about money, we walked in with Louis Vuitton bags after making a purchase. This store is located next to several luxury and designer stores, with in a maximum of a 2 minute walk. So clearly this has nothing to do with the appearance of customers who may or may not have money. There might be another particular word to describe the wait staff, but that is not appropriate to be used in a review forum. I suggest eating literally anywhere else, as this seems to be the only restaurant in the heart of Vienna, surrounded by a significant amount of tourism, that offered terrible service.

Yelp
Really loved the service and decor. Food was good and the Naan amazing. Packed with locals.

Yelp
Centrally located, this coffee/light fare / bar has all the attributes of a restaurant while preserving the charm of a viennese caffee. The waiters are courteous and prompt, the little outdoor tables are covered with white napkins. It was cold but there are warmers everywhere on the wall . The white wine was excellent and the simple soups of the day well made: We had the a beef bouillon with a dollop of semolina and pumpkin soup. Both were good. The little sandwiches of freshly sliced ham on the bone were good as well. This small but delightful lunch did not break the bank either. I will come back for sure !

Yelp
This place was very happening, even on a Wednesday night. Reservation is highly recommended, although we were able to snag a same-day reservation. Our experience started a bit choppy - upon arrival, there was no hostess to check you in. The place was very disorganized, which is ironic for a society that follows strict orders. Although we had a reservation, we had difficulty flagging anyone down to check-in for a table. Once we got seated, the service did become much better. The restaurant offered both tasting menus (72.50 euros and 98.50 euros) and a la carte. Since we weren't too hungry, we decided to order from the menu. For appetizers, we both enjoyed the intense beef soup and the ham dish. The presentation on the ham was outstanding. Both dishes were delicious but met expectations (I guess it is hard to surprise our palates given we are from NYC). For entrees, we went with the most traditional Viennese dishes - schnitzel and beef goulash. I didn't have a very good experience with goulash when I visited Prague a while back. The goulash here, while it didn't change my mind much, was better than the experience I had in Prague. But okay to skip unless you are a big goulash fan. The veal schnitzel was surprisingly light and flavorful. The portions were huge tho, so it can easily be shared by 2. The sommelier helped pick out wines that paired well with our dishes. At the end of the meal, our bill was 120 euros with two appetizers, two entrees, and four glasses of wine (plus the cover charge of 4.5 euros each). From the pricing standpoint, this was definitively a great experience. But did the good here blow my mind? Certainly not...

Yelp
I'm here in Austria for a conference and I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch today. Schwarzen Kameel is located right next to Prada, where one of the associates recommended I stop by (as this has typical food that the locals indulge). I ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese (with Austrian veal) and a Riesling. Both were excellent. I did some people watching before shopping again. The service was excellent (for the most part). Check them out if you're in Vienna (they have menu options for everyone.

Elle S.

Yelp
Obviously a staple in Wien. Lots of trendy folks at this eatery across the street from Prada and Rimowa. I've had better schnitzels in the past but this one was nice in that it was less greasy. No Preiselbeeren with this schnitzel but maybe that's how they do it? The waitstaff were attentive unlike the other reviews. Make sure to check out the sandwich display near the front. If you like to be seen and be seen in Wien I think this is the place to be. For authentic Austrian fare you can also go to other places in the Inner Stadt.

Yelp
Phenomenal food and phenomenal service. Stopped here for lunch while walking around Vienna, and what a great choice it was!

Yelp
I would not recommend this place. The food was mediocre and the morning after I had dinner at this place I had some of the worst food poisoning I ever had. I had a huge problem understanding my server because of how loud it was in the restaurant. It also took ages for me to receive my check.

Rose C.

Yelp
I would never recommend this place ever. The food was terrible and it was obvious that the restaurant gives no care for allergies. We specifically ordered an item on the menu that had no nuts but when the plate arrived to our table it was covered with pesto. Because of this my son had my husband's goulash. It turns out the day after my son comes down with terrible food poisoning. This was detrimental to our trip to Vienna. My son continued to have these issues three days after he had eaten the goulash. Almost forgot to mention how the service was terrible. At the end of our meal we waited for the server to come back to our table for the check. We ended up waiting for longer than 20 minutes for one of the servers to notice that we were finished. We asked him kindly if we could get the check and he gave us confirmation that he was. We waited 5 more minutes for one of the servers to bring us our check but none seem to have realized that we had not received our check. Another waiter then approached our table and we asked him for the check. This did not end up with us receiving the check. It took the staff 10 more minutes for us to finally receive our check. After signing the check we realized that our server incorrectly calculated the amount of gratuity we were supposed to pay. Be safe and stay away from this place.

Yelp
It's been a minute since I really sat down and appreciated a good omelette, but that's exactly what happened at Zum Schwarzen Kameel during a leisurely Sunday breakfast. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Zum Schwarzen Kameel almost feels like an upscale British hotel tea house given the starch shirted servers and the more quiet and measured atmosphere, but the service is very good and sets the stage for a comfortable meal regardless of the time of day. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? In retrospect, €10,50 seems like a lot for a ham omelette, but the hand cut bone in ham is the specialty here and it's not a different price point from what I'd pay elsewhere for a good breakfast dish. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? I'm not sure I can even place how, but this was a really fantastic omelette. Fluffy and flavorful egg with chives that encased flavorful and salty ham. Additionally, the apricot spread here with their fresh bread is near impossible to beat. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you be excited to go back? It's not that I wouldn't be excited to go back, but the one downfall that I haven't mentioned yet was that the menu for breakfast at Zum Schwarzen Kameel is a bit small, so if you're not an omelette person you might be out of luck. No Star.

Yelp
Most likely the best restaurant in Vienna. They have very high standards and they keep them. We had a wonderful time here experiencing the 2 tasting menus, one traditional Viennese, the other a modern presentation. Both were excellent. In particular, the wines recommended by our server fit the food in a sublime way. The service was impeccable. I've never seen a table of six served all together at once in such a carefully orchestrated way. It takes teamwork, training, dedication and passion. The food was simply amazing. Ham with horesradish that was tender, most and tasty. A steak that was cooked perfectly and served with a delicious reduction. Desserts that were creative and over the top. One caution I have is to take your time. Our 5 course meal was 2.5 hours. It was wonderfully paced and we'll timed. But make sure you leave time to enjoy a marvelous meal. Also, dress up a little. Most men were wearing coats and ties. Some of the servers wore white coats. But dress for a special occasion. Enjoy a tradition that is 400 years old, enjoy service that is next to flawless, and food and drink that will delight you.

Yelp
This place was so elegant and amazing. We came here on our first night out in district 1 during our vacation to Vienna. It is located in the heart of Vienna and perfect to grab a glass of wine before continuing shopping or before grabbing dinner. This place had the best schnitzel! It was definitely great to be pair with the tangy potato salad. I have never had potato salad like that in the states. The service was impeccable and the wine choices were vast. It is a great place to grab food and drinks with friends. There is also an outside area to eat and drink with heated lamps. This place is definitely a spot to go to when in Vienna.

Yelp
Two words to describe this restaurant are köstlich and pristine! Food and presentation are on point and the environment is fabulous. This experience is one that you should have when visiting Vienna! Foot-wise you can find traditional fare such as wiener schnitzel as well as delicate cakes and finger foods. Overall, great service and delicious food.

Yelp
This was sort of an emergency find, just wanted a place to sit after a long stroll through the Albertina where my vacation museum back wasn't used to that workout. I went with the lamb gulasch, and it was tasty. A little on the pricey side for what I got (small portion, etc), especially as compared to some of the other restaurants I visited on this trip, but for lunch, it worked just fine. The lamb had...ok flavor. Was certainly tender, but didn't taste all that much like lamb, if I'm honest. Spätzle along side was a nice touch, that was good in the left over gravy. So, if you need a bite for lunch or a cafe to sit at, this will work, not bad at all. But I don't think I would say this is a must go or a thing to seek out while you're in the area.

Yelp
The BEST schnitzel in all of Vienna. Be sure to make a reservation or you will have problems getting a table. What was... WOW-schnitzel GREAT-the local white Austrian wine GOOD-the rectangle sandwiches OKAY - everything ranked higher NEVER AGAIN - nothing, I would return! I don't know how they make their homemade schnitzel so much noticeably better but it is BY FAR better than any other we had in Vienna. Our waiter Wolfie was exceptional in every way. He even told us about the book, so glad he did, I new I had to have that.
google avatar

Yelp
I strongly recommend this place! Great for people watching while having drinks for happy hour or enjoying a meal. Guests are a nice mix of locals and tourists. Service is crisp and friendly. This is where we had one of our most pleasant meals in Vienna.

Yelp
The Quick: Very sophisticated and gorgeous spot with great food and fantastic staff. They are extremely accommodating and will make you items not on the menu (beef tartare) and not overcharge you for them. Dress up and enjoy. The Details: This was the most expensive meal we had in Vienna, but it was extremely delicious (still less than NYC). We did not need a reservation, and had no idea how elegant this place was. Dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, our waiter still treated us like prime clientele. The food was great, we loved the goulash and the schnitzel,as well as the beef tartare. The Damage: ~ 130 Euro for 2 entrees, 2 apps, 2 drinks ...and they expect (and ask) for an additional tip unlike most of Europe. The service and food was worth it.

Yelp
Beautiful eatery. In another age, it was often frequented by Ludwig Van Beethoven. The feel and nature of the cafe and staff shines through to create a truly well rounded and enjoyable luxury dining experience. Located in the heart of Vienna, this establishment centres around class and memorable dining experiences outdoors, or indoors for your convenience.

Yelp
One of the most famous eateries not only in Vienna but on this planet is Zum Schwarzen Kameel. It deserves its fame. This year it is celebrating its 400th birthday (1618-2018) and this hangout of Beethoven & Mozart is still a go-to place. What I like most about Schwarzen Kameel is that it has so many faces....let me list some of them and you can see for yourself. It's a restaurant, deli & store, bar, sidewalk café. It serves breakfast, lunch, & dinner and snacks. You can dine here inexpensively in the bar, or enjoy table-linen fine dining in the restaurant, or just savor a wine in the people-watching Schanigarten (café). One thing I can guarantee you is that it is always crowded - yes after 400 years it def still has a buzz about it. And I have usually found the always white-jacketed wait staff to be efficient and mostly friendly despite being very busy. To celebrate its 400th birthday, I stopped in for a lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the Rahmgurkensalat, Wiener Backhendl (breaded fried chicken Viennese style), and Schladminger Bier. The waiter was great and very attentive. I only hope the Schwarzen Kameel is able to celebrate a half-a-millennium birthday in 2118. (I'll unfortunately though have to miss that celebration!) Special note - Kameel is actually a variation on the family name of its founder and not the German word for camel which is Kamel. But since everyone has always thought of the restaurant as To The Black Camel (Zum Schwarzen Kamel), it long ago gave in to the misconception and adopted a black camel as its symbol.

Yelp
Peak people watching. The food is generally always good but sit outside if you can, under the heaters when cold out, and watch the people go by. It's easy to spend an extra hour or two here after you dine because it's such a scene.

Yelp
Omigosh, LOVE this place. My favorite restaurant in Vienna. It's bustling and packed, but that almost adds to the traditional upscale European vibe. I couldn't even decide what to eat because I wanted everything on the menu. And each item that came out was better than the last--I was in heaven. I started with the truffle-foam soup, which was so delicious and perfect that my colleague had to order a bowl as well. I also got the escargot, which were as good as I have ever had in France. And finished with meatballs and mashed potatoes; the plate was wiped clean, the potatoes were so creamy and flavorful, as well as the meatballs and sauce, absolutely perfect! Will come back here on every trip.

Yelp
Good food, decent price. Sat outside, good people watching. Very good asparagus soup and Wiener schnitzel. I guess they are used to tourists, as they were very nice to English speakers
google avatar

Peter S.

Yelp
A total disappointment! Service utterly unfriendly, with a bourgeois clientele suffering from "holier than thou" syndrome. Make sure you practise your "pissed off" face, and perfect your "dismissively eyeing passers-by" if you want to fit in with the crowd outside. Operative word : "if you want to ..." "M'as-tu vu" is an understatement!! When we ordered the hot chocolate with Cointreau, a cold "we don't have hot chocolate anymore" was the reply. No chocolate? IN VIENNA?! This in combination with the above mentioned points made our decision to leave all the more easy. Also the smoking is so bad, it's ridiculous (and I'm a smoker myself!).
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
I was excited to go to this place bc a lot of Viennese people talked about it. I have been there twice: The first time, a pointedly unfriendly server kept forgetting our wine order (after having ignored us for about 15-20 minutes). While they have some really good wines and the food is also good (though not superb), the service really was very disappointing. The second time was about the same as the first only with a different server, it almost seems like they are perfectly nice to the regulars but not so much to out-of-towners, so I am sorry to say I am not a fan of this place.

Yelp
Great spot for drinks, people watching and a quick snack on the go in Vienna. Day or night.

Yelp
Possibly the worst service we've had in quite a while. If you're looking for horrible wine service and decent food in an iconic restaurant with arrogant and inattentive service, this is your place

Yelp
Great service! Very good food despite all the tourists! Very professional staff, nice menu, fresh well prepared food. I had the lamb and my husband the taste of Austria menu.

Yelp
Zum Schwarzen Kameel is located in the city center of Vienna and offers some of the best Viennese food in the city. The atmosphere was completely casual when we came in during a lunch hour and there were plenty of open tables outside. All of the main dishes and specialties of the restaurant were heavy on protein, so we decided to split an artichoke/arugula/tomato salad and a pot roast dish called Rindstafelspitz. While the salad was nothing too memorable, the Rindstafelspitz was delicious. The meat was tender and fell apart without needing to use a knife, but it was honestly not all that flavorful. However, the sides that came with the dish complemented the meat perfectly and completed the dish by providing fantastic flavors. First, the creamed spinach served next to the meat was savory, decadent, and not overly creamy/milky like the creamed spinaches that would be found in an American steakhouse. The roast potato strips were perfectly crispy, buttery, and salty--undoubtedly the best roast potatoes I've ever had. Then there were two sauces on the side: an applesauce with grated strips of horseradish that was sweet with a pleasantly surprising kick, and a chive-mayo type sauce that was creamy and herbal. It was so much fun to break off strips of meat and dollop some of each of the sauces/sides together on the fork in order to form perfect, individual bites.

Yelp
On a recent Friday night, this was the place to be! Crowded both inside and outside. We had to wait for a inside table due to a cold wind. The asparagus soup was very good and Pork cutlet was outstanding. 3 Sorbets were a perfect dessert. We were not rushed but service was hectic due to the crowd. This is a stand up bar too. We will be back

Yelp
Great place to eat, decent service but seemed a bit over priced. Food was very good and they had a great wine list!

Yelp
This place deserves multiple reviews since it consists out of several distinct entities. It is worth pointing out that Kameel has the absolutely, hands down, best Wiener Schnitzel in town, and that it is not on the menu (kind of their trademark) - the locals know that and if you order it, you'll get a classic that is out of this world! I'll review the front of the house - bar/standing area serving little open faced sandwiches, wiener schnitzels, small deserts, etc. I'll leave the adjacent restaurant review for some other time because the menu is completely different. Now at the front house/bar area - I am a regular. The finger food: - Sandwiches - all of them, and they have 30 different kinds, are excellent. They are mostly open faced sandwiches with a variety of home made spreads. I love the egg salad with curry, the spicy ham and my absolute favorite is Styrian pumpkin seed spread. I can eat a dozen of these and go back for more. - Other eats - you can get a cut up Wiener schnitzel to be eaten like finger food, with wine and cheese. I like this concept. - Sweets - very good too, large variety so you can try different ones. - Wine - smaller by the glass selection of acceptable wines. They also have beer - small size only - as well as different coffee drinks. But what I really like is that you can get all of the little sandwiches and sweets to go, or better yet, have them delivered to your home if you are hosting a party. I have done that a couple of times and the order was always accurate and the delivery was right on time.

Yelp
If you are not Austrian, do not waste your time or money here. They are very off putting to non-Austrians. Why pay their high prices to be treated rudely? Asked a waiter how to get a table and his response was "know the owner."

Yelp
People watching, light food and great drinks are hallmarks of this elegant Cafe /Wine bar in central Vienna. Situated just off the busy Graben shopping area in the central city, the Black Camel Cafe offers its clientele a wonderful but not complicated lunch and drinks in a chic setting. While most patrons are largely well heeled locals, visitors are certainly welcome without reservations. For lunch you can order a more formal meal but most patrons prefer to choose from an array of wonderful little open sandwiches be they salmon, shrimp. roast beef or Paprika egg. Surprisingly for the setting, prices are not high. Then you order the traditional Austrian Wine or Spritzers or a mixed drink. The must-visit outdoor seating has white linen tablecloths, an unmistakable vibe of understated elegance, and generally good service. If it's crowded outside, you can eat inside at the bar and at tables which seem more attuned to informal business meetings. This year Black Camel hosted a glittering Campari "pop up bar" which was meant to last for a few weeks but endured as a favorite throughout the summer. Whenever in Vienna, the Black Camel is a must for us.

Yelp
Once I got past the snooty guy at the door who told us all the tables were "reserved" inside (funny how many went empty the two hours we were there), but we could sit outside, then I enjoyed this restaurant. The food was good and well priced. Our waiter was actually very nice and had good recommendations for us. The smoking outside was not nice. I had the Wiener schnitzel; not sure what my husband ate, another beef plate. We liked both and the bottle of Pinot was very tasty. Closed it off with apricot pancakes.

Yelp
The back restaurant part of it was great. The staff was courteous, attentive, knowledgeable and the food was great. Four stars there! Unfortunately, I can't split my review, as this is one place, so 1 star for the front room bistro (see below). I averaged them out to get 2 stars. The front part of the place (where they serve sandwiches and finger foods as you enter from the street) was awful. They NEED to teach their staff some manners! Had a lunch reservation for 12/27/16, for the back restaurant. In the front, in typical Vienna restaurant and café fashion these days, service seemed rushed and not congenial. I saw a waitress passing by and said "Excuse me", as I wanted to ask for directions on where the door to the restaurant was. She ignored me completely. I said "excuse me" again when she passed me by, and she ignored me again. So I followed to where she and another waiter were standing, and despite basically yelling "excuse me" at her, she didn't even turn to face me, but said to the waiter in German (yeah, I speak German, surprise-surprise!) "see what this one wants". I said "you could at least say hello, even if you don't want to talk to me", and she turns towards me with the most sour face in the world and says "you didn't say hello to me!". Uhm, hello, it's a restaurant! "Excuse me" is a way of getting your attention when I, the customer, enter the place and/or need something. The waiter seemed to share her attitude, but pointed me to the restaurant door. The restaurant staff seemed to know their front-room staff are rude, but they just said "it's different in here" (aka, in the restaurant proper). And it was, but that experience left a bitter taste in my mouth. For a place that's so famous in Vienna, they need to learn some service skills. Customers are your paycheck. And if you don't like tourists, don't work in the service industry in a major European capital!

Yelp
Someone suggested ZSK to us and we were excited. The dining outside was nice and quaint., with white table clothes and in the heart of the prime shopping areas. As soon as we sat down, we could tell the waiter clearly does not or approve of tourists. The waiter gave us our menus in English which was appropriate but he was pushing us to order something different than we wanted. The food came prompt but it wasn't what we ordered. Once we received the correct order, our food was delicious. It took a nice young bus boy to make it right, the main waiter certainly tainted our experience here. The atmosphere was trendy but the service help need lots of work.

Yelp
Fantastic variety of delicious open-faced sandwiches made this a place to return to on our trip as much as possible. Amazing historic interior too..great location....and again, wonderful distinctive wine bar food. Unforgettable!

Yelp
Our hotel recommended this restaurant, but after I read the reviews I almost cancelled. What a mistake that would have been. We had a wonderful time. The Black Camel is a local's watering hole with a happy, busy vide. The food was delicious - but what really sets it apart was the service. We had a team of four or five women taking care of us. They were helpful, attentive and very skilled. I loved the whole experience.

Yelp
We dined in the upscale dining room in the back. Two of our party chose the five course prix fixe - €72. This resulted in our lunch taking over 2 1/2 hours. The dishes were alternately traditional Austrian or quite innovative. Pea shoots were to be seen everywhere. I loved my barley risotto and chicken. It was slightly salty, which I don't mind. The apricot crêpes were divine. The bread served warm with the meal was outstanding. The cutlery was real silver. Very classy meal.

Yelp
EPIC SMOKING! Avoid if not a chain smoker. This place might be fancy, but be prepared to smell like an ashtray. My hair will take several washings to get the smell out after being in the smoke room less than 5 minutes. It's thick with smoke. All the deli items and food are sitting in the room with smoke. I don't want to eat carcinogens that have settled on all the glasses, plates, food waiting to be served etc. All the door handles, countertops and surfaces are covered with the yellow grease one associates with lots of smoking. I personally believe that cigarette smoke and actually tasting food don't go together. I doubt anyone can actually taste the food if they are smoking this much. If the chef takes pride in what they are making, they should have a closed off smoking room, not the food actually sitting in it. A little smoking is normal in Vienna, not a cloud that actually makes your food taste like an ashtray. Gross. We made a reservation and of course it's been 30 minutes and we have yet to be seated. We're forced to either sit outside in the freezing cold or sit in the toxic cloud. Not really ok at all.

Yelp
Very good food, I had the chicken and it was amazing. The Austrian wine was also very good. I would recommend you to sit inside if you don't smoke. Must say that the top three things that I like are: 1. Incredible customer service which is kind of hard to find in Vienna, 2. Very good food, 3. They accept credit cards!

Yelp
Today afternoon I was here with friends to get some drinks. First we were searching for seats for 4 people. The waiters neither realized nor asked us if we need some help. The drinks are very expensive and the atmosphere is not very relaxing because it seems to me that the guests and the waiters think they are stuck up. We paid a lot for only 3 drinks- additionally the waiter miscalculated and we had to pay 20 € more. I think there are better and especially more enjoyable restaurants in the city than this!- above all with a more friendly staff!!

Yelp
Best meal this year. Between the four of us I think we had one of everything on the menu and all was superb. Service you would expect from perhaps the best restaurant in Vienna. Wine list was a bit tricky so we used the sommelier to assist. This was due to our unfamiliarity with the mostly Austrian and German wines on the list. The Art Deco interior was very pleasing to my eye. Put this place on your calendar if you should ever have the opportunity to visit Vienna. A note to American and other health loving people - we tried to stay for an after dinner drink in the bar/market area but were quickly driven away by the heavy smoking. Unfortunately this was not an experience unique to Zum Schwarzen Kameel.

Yelp
Extremely charming old school european eaterie to pass some time in. Wonderful for people watching. I loved their expresso, desserts, and sandwiches when I was visiting 13 years ago.
