The 33 Essential Zurich Restaurants

"While the menu at Zunfthaus zur Waag is influenced by cuisines around the world, the highlights are the local dishes. Under the leadership of chef Erik Schröter, Zunfthaus zur Waag has become a venue for showcasing Swiss cuisine, especially the Zurich version of kalbsgeschnetzeltes (Zürcher geschnetzeltes), thinly sliced veal in a creamy sauce with tender mushrooms, here served with rösti and optionally calf’s kidneys. The creativity extends to the dessert menu, where you’ll find plum tart with cinnamon ice cream or dumplings with apricots and vanilla sauce." - N.A. Mansour

"Guild Hall Dining with a View of the Münsterhof Zurich’s original 14 guilds were established in Medieval times to represent different crafts- and tradesmen, and their grand, stately buildings that still dot the city are a testament to their one-time power. Fortunately, most are well-preserved and now serve as fine restaurants. Zunfthaus zur Waag, house of the guild of wool and linen weavers, has a Biedermeier-style dining room with lots of wood-paneling, stained glass windows, and a terrific view of the Münsterhof. The dish to order is the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, the classic Zurich specialty of pan-fried veal with a creamy white-wine sauce."

Love it here. We’ve been a frequent visitor of this place and they never disappoint us. The food is nice and the space is lovely. They always try to accompany any request we had as well.

I had a fantastic dining experience at Zunfthaus zur Waag! The food was exceptional, with their signature Zürcher Geschnetzeltes and butter rösti stealing the show. The wine selection is superb, offering a great mix of local and international options that paired perfectly with the meal. My only suggestion would be to expand the menu with a few more pasta dishes for added variety. Still, an AAA+ experience in a charming, historic setting. Highly recommend! #ZurichDining #ZunfthausZurWaag #zurich

A charming Zurich classic with exquisite cuisine Dining at Zunfthaus zur Waag was a true pleasure – the setting is full of historic charm, and the atmosphere feels both elegant and welcoming. We enjoyed a beautifully prepared king prawn spaghetti, full of flavor and perfectly balanced, followed by delicate sole, cooked with precision and care. Both dishes were refined, fresh, and beautifully presented. Service was attentive and gracious, making the entire experience feel relaxed yet special. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy classic Swiss hospitality with top-notch cuisine in the heart of Zurich.

Google
One of the best émincé de veau that I have eaten. The service was even friendly. There were several business group dinners when I was there on a Wednesday evening in January. The only thing I would propose to the chef is to have the option of spätzle or rösti with the émincé.

We dined to celebrate my birthday whilst on holiday in Zurich with friends. The restaurant managed to accommodate us at short notice which we really appreciated. The staff were very attentive & the food was delicious. The restaurant is expensive but the food was of a high quality and the setting is lovy. We dined on the first floor and our table was by the door. We would have preferred to be further in the restaurant space but given our booking was made at short notice this was understandable. For two people we paid £235 which was for 3 courses, 1 bottle of wine and 1 bottle of water. The restaurant also decorated my dessert to recognise my birthday which was a nice touch. I would recommend this restaurant for a special occasion.

Fantastic meal from start to finish! Loved the roasted duck liver appetizer. The beef filet was tasty and cooked to perfection with a beautiful array of vegetables, and amazing oyster mushrooms that were so meaty. Amazing service. A very special dinner, worth the cost.

Yelp
Another very good meal at Zunfthaus zur Waag. This was our third visit in as many years. Food was not quite up there with prior visits...service not so much which kind of made us a bit sad. Ordered the Zurich Style Veal with Rosti and Beef special of the day from the daily menu. Both were very tasty maybe a new chef. Don't get me wrong. The place is still very good. Our expectations are a bit high in this caliber of restaurant. And it might have just been the poor service. Atmosphere can't be beat. Lovely interior. Will probably give it another chance in the Fall or Spring when we return. We had a reservation for this lunch but really didn't need one. Recommend

Yelp
I loved everything !!! Service was great, the ambiance, my view, and the food. My favorite dish by far was the pumpkin soup. In fact, my favorite soup i've ever had. I wish I could take it home with me. So many flavors and hot on a nice fall day. I also got the mushroom crepe as an app, which was good. For my entree I go the autumn platter, again so many flavors and all were good portion sizes. My boyfriend got the Wiener schnitzel. Highly recommend !

Yelp
Yum! What a perfect little Swiss restaurant. The food is amazing and so delicious made from all fresh ingredients. I also love this place because it's not commercialized or an Instagram bait. While everything is exquisite and the ambiance implacable, you'll love this place because their goal is to serve great food & provide a great experience. The influencer wannabes are all around the corner in a packed & loud restaurant with average food & loud customers. Everything we had on this restaurant was just delicious so if you're going to be in Zurich make reservations in advance and go. This is a must and I'll be back again !

Yelp
We stumbled across this restaurant on our second day in Zürich and had the most exquisite lunch here. I usually like to do a little research on where we eat to avoid tourist traps and lousy food but this place just looked fantastic and did not disappoint. We sat outside and I started with spinach salad and glass of German rosé. The salad was so delicious - the spinach so fresh and tasty compared to US and the vinaigrette was superb -- my husband ordered one for himself. I then had Swiss whitefish fillets with pesto tagliatelle and ratatouille -- all of which was divine - while my husband had sliced veal with calf's kidneys and rösti with a Pouilly Fumé which he said was outstanding. Finished up with an excellent crème brûlée with raspberry sorbet (a fantastic combination) and a Schweiz Gemma mathier (Swiss dessert wine). Not only was the food exquisite but service was friendly and very efficient. Most perfect lunch of our vacay outdoors in the Swiss sunshine.

Yelp
Yes, heaven awaits those that finally find the best restaurant. Pricey? Yes. Perfect service? Yes. Delicious, amazing and absolutely mouth watering food? YES!!!! Elegant and fine dining at its best in Zurich. Treat yourself. I had the veal without veal kidneys and rosti. (Rosti is like a pan fried hash brown for us in the U.S. ;) First, I started with a good white wine my server suggested. Yes, I had 4 glasses. It was almost my last day here so whatever. The salad was thinly sliced cucumbers and tomatoes topped with fresh arugula and burrata mozzarella drizzled with a balsamic reduction. It was heavenly. The veal was tender chunks with mushrooms in a creamy sauce along with the crispy, not greasy, rosti. So, so amazing. Although full I had to order the apple dumpling served on a bed o rich, creamy vanilla bean sauce. You have to order this is advance or wait 15 or more minutes to have it served. I ordered in advance. Fresh at its finest. Crispy and lovely vanilla sauce. Oh my. Gratuity is not needed in Switzerland and other parts of Europe but I insisted since it was such a wonderful, tasty experience all around. I chatted with the maitre'd although I am not sure this is his title. You may recognize him on 'Delicious Destinations' hosted by Andrew Zimmern. He was so nice to chat with me and is very humble. So, please treat yourself to an amazing dining experience. You can thank me later!

Yelp
I had dinner here on a Tuesday night with an old MBA classmate who was in town for a conference. We sat outdoors on a Tuesday night with a bunch of guys from his conference. It was really lovely in the heart of the old town, and I was surprised that they let us linger there all night without kicking us out. We were literally the last ones left there at almost midnight. I had a lovely autumn salad with scallops and pata negra ham that cost CHF 42.50 for the main course portion. My dessert was some kind of yummy frozen concoction with ice cream and fresh berries. Too bad I didn't get to check out the inside of this guild house, but it was still lovely to sit outside. And the waitress was nice and spoke English.

Yelp
Zunfthaus zur Waag was an exceptional experience in Old Town Zurich. The wine, food and service were all top notch. The host and all employees worked diligently to ensure guests had everything needed and it met or exceeded expectations. The host greeted our table calling us by our names which was impressive and made us feel truly welcomed. Thank you to this impressive team - we look forward to seeing you again on our next visit to Zurich!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Zurich! Great service. Cozy as it's small but classic and comfortable table settings. Considering the ambiance and quality of everything from flower decoration on the table and warm bread with butter, very high quality lachs and good portion size fish. The value, especially lunch menu was great compare to other restaurants in ZH. Highly recommended for business lunch, special meal or date.

Yelp
Traditional Swiss restaurant situated in the middle of a square. I came here for a work dinner around Christmas time and the square was nicely decorated with a Christmas tree and lights. The food was well prepared and tasty. I loved their lamb's lettuce salad. Service was great and quick. Can't comment on the price because it didn't come out of my pocket, but you are in Zurich!!!

Yelp
Elegant Swiss restaurant with a heavily historical presence in Zurich. Chiseled service with elements of clock-work orchestra. Disclaimer: I wouldn't be able to reserve a table and let alone eat here if it wasn't through a respected culinary connection who personally worked with the Chef Alain Koenig and manager. In some ways, this review will be biased because of my grateful opportunity to do/eat more than the typical diner. Food: Truly, extensive menu of traditional Swiss food. This means juicy duck liver, different veal cuts, and calf's kidneys. The wide variety of meats also come in decent portions. Throughout my courses, I was already getting full by the time I got to my second bite of my main dish. We started our meal with a basket of different kinds of bread. No big deal, right? But I probably ate more bread in one sitting than all of the other occasions in a year. The bread was warm and soft yet crispy to the touch. Back to my main course, I've never tried veal liver before so this was my first time trying veal in general. The meat was tender and topped off with a herby, balanced buttery glaze of rosemary and sage. My sincere apologies that I don't speak/write Swiss German so I can't exactly copy and paste the exact the dish names! We finished off with the chocolate mousse by Marcel Chardon, which is one of the special desserts of the menu. I eat desserts on a frequent basis and generally not a big fan of chocolate but still enjoyed the richness of raw cocoa with a ridiculously smooth texture of the chocolate mousse. What a delicate yet robust dessert. Ambiance: The restaurant is adorned in white and light blue colors so you can't miss it from afar. The color scheme also adds a pristine touch, along with the glass fixtures. I felt like a little princess walking through a castle in this restaurant. The carpets add a cozy touch to the quiet atmosphere - which is perfect for intimate events. I look forward to dining again in my next visit to Zurich. Super love!

Yelp
Our last night in Zurich we had dinner here in this wonderful Resturant in this 14th century building in Old Town and it was a highlight of the trip. The place was bustling but the hostess found us a table in short order and we had an amazing meal - venison loin served with schnitzel gravy and mushrooms, red cabbage and potatoes. It was exactly what we were in the mood for! The manager spent some time talking to us and asking us about our travels in Germany and Switzerland and gave us some of the history of the building and the restaurant and it was absolutely fascinating. After ordering dessert, the waitress informed us that our cappuccino and desserts were compliments of the manager. What a wonderful surprise and a high note to end our trip on!

Yelp
This is not just a restaurant, it's a cultural institution within Zurich. It's small and therefore usually fully booked, so be sure to reserve well in advance. It's the cheaper of the two restaurants in the immediate Münsterhof area, the other being Tobias and Sabrina Buholzer's high-class, high-price restaurant. I ate a delicious duck liver entrée for just CHF 28.50. Quite a price, for a restaurant in a prime location in Zurich! The restaurant's style of cooking is Swiss, but not boring, with a few international touches to boot. Although they are a small restaurant, they employ their own pastry chef quite laudable, all things considered. The pastry chef made a spontaneous, flawless dessert variation. The chocolate mousse was heavily advertised, but was relatively ordinary, especially considering that it should have been Felchlin chocolate (it didn't taste like it). My mousse is better, because I use Felchlin chocolate, too, but use its full potential. Nonetheless, it was a delightful little dessert variation with a beautiful lemon tart, including a rather dainty meringue topping. Cute, young people serving competently under the watchful eye of Mr. Hoffmann. I can recommend the restaurant to anyone who wants to eat a real piece of Zurich. Yelp
One look at this building, and I was in love. I'm a sucker for old buildings. If you tell me it's full of delicious gourmet food, well, just try to keep me away! I visited Zunfthaus zur Waag as part of a large group I work with. The restaurant sits in a building that dates from 1636, in the Münsterhof square in the old part of Zurich. Sitting outside on the patio, I sipped wine while watching Zurichers walk home from a day at work. It was a relaxing way to end a day spent in meetings! When it was time for dinner, our group headed inside. We were seated in the Zunft-Stube banquet room, where hundreds of glass coat of arms discs hang in the windows. Like a dork, I spent a good amount of time looking for my Swiss and German family names among the coats of arms. After the food was brought out, I left genealogy in the dust. I had to focus 100% on this awesome food. The starter was a salmon carpaccio with a nicely balanced tabbouleh, and wine. That was followed by a tender and flavorful beef Stroganoff with spaetzle... and thus began my love affair with spaetzle! Also, more wine. Finally, a parfait of rhubarb and strawberries, which is one of my favorite flavor combinations. In typical Swiss style, this was paired with that amazing strong espresso with a perfect crema that is so ubiquitous in Switzerland but so hard to find in the states. Though this was a work function and I didn't pick the restaurant, if going back to Zurich, I would definitely visit this place again.

Yelp
This food was amazing. We had everything from complementary champagne (for no reason at all) to seared foie gras. We had an amazing salad and an authentic dish of veal and mushroom in a brown gravy over rosti topped with a bit of cream and a roasted tomato. It was seriously the best meal we had in Switzerland. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the staff was amazing.

Yelp
Quality permeates this Swiss restaurant in a central location - local dishes which do the Swiss proud - top drawer staff and management -great and quiet atmosphere for business meetings - or intimate gatherings - wonderful view of the square - you cannot go wrong here if you are looking for a quality experience-
