South African-inspired sandwiches, wraps, and bowls

"It’s hard to miss the bright orange Zunzi’s sign on Howell Mill and even harder to overlook their “Sh*t Yeah” slogan. But after a bite of one of their sandwiches, you'll nod in agreement—these extra saucy subs, which are thoroughly spiced and served with French bread, are exciting shake-ups to the city's sandwich scene. It took over a decade for this Savannah, Ga.-born, South African sandwich place to put down roots in ATL. We just wish they came sooner because we could have spent more years eating our favorites like the Godfather with tender chicken and Boerewors sausage doused with their tangy, signature Sh*t yeah and Sheba sauce. But no visit to this fast-casual counter service-spot would be complete without a few of their wings covered with creamy Mustafa curry." - Juli Horsford

"After shoppers and drivers expressed confusion over a newly installed “Takeout & Catering” tagline, the owner removed it; despite visible indoor seating, a small patio with rainbow umbrellas, and bold outdoor menu graphics, passerby uncertainty about whether the location was takeout-only prompted the change — within ten minutes of the original installation five people walked in to ask about the menu." - Beth McKibben

"I learned the Buckhead location on Howell Mill Road recently dropped “Takeout & Catering” from its name after owner Chris Smith found that people driving by assumed it was only takeout and passed on trying it because they wanted to sit down. Despite large windows, bright lights revealing tables and chairs and a small patio with rainbow umbrellas, signage still wasn’t communicating seating, so Smith wrote in a lengthy social media post explaining the change. The front of the building now displays big, bold graphics describing the menu as South African-inspired sandwiches, wraps, and bowls, and Smith says that within ten minutes of installing the banners five people walked in to inquire. The shop also weathered a bit of controversy over its longtime motto “Shit Yeah,” prompting a posted explanation at the entrance and staff sometimes calling the condiment “SY” sauce; as Smith put it, “Shit Yeah” is their promise that they hope customers leave saying, ‘Shit yeah!’ and that they want to make it right if they don’t. Their most popular sandwiches include the fully-loaded Conquistador with chicken, Romaine, and tomato dressed with SY sauce and Zunzi’s dressing, and the Godfather with chicken, two kinds of sausage, provolone, Romaine, tomato, and parmesan topped with marinara, SY sauce, and Zunzi’s dressing; both are served on French bread." - Beth McKibben

"I noted that Savannah-based Zunzi's Takeout on Howell Mill Road caused consternation among neighbors on NextDoor because of its motto 'Shit Yeah' appearing on the menu." - Beth McKibben
