"An art nouveau–style grande dame in Cortina d’Ampezzo that first opened in 1901, this historic hotel has hosted celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Brigitte Bardot and even lent its skating rink to the U.S. Olympic team for practice during the 1956 Winter Olympics. Taken over by Mandarin Oriental in 2022, it has been closed since 2023 for an extensive Herzog & de Meuron–led renovation; a reopening date has not yet been announced. Planned features include 83 rooms and suites (many with balconies and panoramic mountain views), a variety of restaurants and bars (with the fate of the legendary nightclub still unclear), and a spacious spa with an indoor/outdoor pool. Room rates are not yet available." - Laura Itzkowitz
