New Local Owners Make Charleston Hotel the City Living Room - AFAR

"In the heart of historic downtown Charleston lies the stately brick facade of The Charleston Place. Its 17th century-style exterior only hints at the understated elegance and exquisite amenities inside. Like Charleston itself, the hotel embodies the charm of The South with a twist. Built in 1986 to anchor an ambitious downtown revitalization plan, the iconic property is experiencing a renaissance with new local owners making it independent. Beemok Hospitality Group (a Charleston-based business that operates a growing portfolio of luxury hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues) purchased The Charleston Place in late 2021. The company is making significant investments in the already-stunning property, solidifying its legacy as a world-class destination for out-of-town visitors and locals alike. Extensive renovations including remodeling its rooms, lobby, public and conference spaces, restaurants, The Spa at The Charleston Place, and boutiques are underway—even the exterior will receive an upgrade. While the hotel already hosts musicians and artwork adorns its corridors, plans for frequent cultural installations are also in the works, key in making it a destination for the local community too. The Charleston Place’s location in the heart of downtown makes it the ideal lodging choice for guests who prefer to explore the area on foot. Charleston City Market, one of the nation’s oldest public markets, is just steps from the hotel and home to more than 300 locally-owned businesses. Here, visitors can shop for items such as art, jewelry, artisan foods, clothing and accessories, hand-poured candles, sweetgrass baskets made by Gullah craftspeople, and much more. Waterfront Park, an eight-acre oasis that runs alongside a half-mile of the Cooper River and offers expansive Charleston Harbor views, is a five-minute walk away. Visitors can stroll among gardens, fountains, and art installations, people-watch from wooden swings, or fish from the lengthy covered pier. If you decide to take a drive, consider renting one of the hotel’s open-air electric vehicles. (They also have two Tesla EV charging stations if your own ride is eco-friendly.) Several beaches and islands are within a 30-minute drive, including Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, and Seabrook Island. And if you’d rather keep it local and even more earth-friendly, the hotel provides complimentary bikes and will launch a pedicab service soon. The hotel sets an elegant tone with its graceful lobby for many weddings, conferences, and celebrations. From the moment guests enter The Charleston Place lobby, Southern hospitality envelops them, from a grand piano player tickling the ivories to the warm, friendly staff. A magnificent Georgian-style open-arm staircase frames an ornate glass chandelier, while oversized flower arrangements seduce the senses. Hallways and common areas feature nautical maps and scenes, a nod to Charleston’s maritime history. Inside guest rooms, visitors will find spacious quarters with large windows and natural light. Neutral tones, Carrara marble herringbone floors, walk-in rain showers, and luxurious linens invite guests to slow down, relax and appreciate these comforts. From upper floor balconies, guests can see cruise ships in the harbor. A host of amenities such as babysitting, turndown service, a well-equipped gym, and private yoga classes are available, as are meeting and conference rooms for guests who are traveling for work. Visitors can hit stores such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci (located on the ground floor) for some retail therapy time. And pets are welcome with a $150 per pet fee. On the fourth floor, guests can revel in ultimate serenity at The Spa at The Charleston Place, which specializes in restorative wellness services. Treat yourself to a seaweed detox, full-body massage, or the popular “Tata Harper Nothing But Nature Facial,” a nontoxic treatment with zero synthetic chemicals. Or simply enjoy the present moment in the saltwater infinity pool. There’s also an idyllic indoor/outdoor pool, a hot tub, and a full-service salon if you’re in town for an event (or simply want to look great for those vacation photos). The Riviera Theater—a National Historic Landmark which hosts national acts and concerts—is across the street and part of the hotel. It boasts more than 9,000 square feet of event space, an amphitheater, a lavish grand ballroom, and a rooftop terrace overlooking King Street and City Market. There’s no better spot for a Charleston party than this impressive Art Deco building, making it a beloved venue for wedding receptions and local celebrations. The Charleston Place is where foodies will find nirvana with five distinctive restaurants plus in-room dining. Charleston Grill, the hotel’s fine-dining concept, is a popular destination for locals as well as hotel guests. Its sophisticated, globally-inspired menu includes low-country favorites, vegan options, and fusion dishes such as Indonesian collard greens. The airy, light-filled atmosphere inside The Palmetto Cafe is perfect for a midday meal of local fare; when the weather is nice, guests can dine alfresco. Alternatively, the Thoroughbred Club, located in the lobby bar, features a more masculine atmosphere, small plates, live music, and an impressive beverage menu—don’t miss the Smoked Old Fashioned. Meeting at Market is the hotel’s gastropub. With its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking City Market, it’s where sports fans flock to watch the big game and indulge in craft beer, fine spirits, and elevated pub food. Rounding out the restaurant list is The Clocktower Terrace, a rooftop pool and terrace offering panoramic city views, handcrafted cocktails, and a light bar menu. For the full foodie experience, spring for the Club Level, located on the seventh and eighth floors—it’s worth it. In addition to a full breakfast spread, the Club Lounge serves delectable snacks, afternoon tea, cocktails, and more throughout the day. In the evening, expect heavy hors d’oeuvres including sushi, crab legs, lobster mac and cheese, and an array of desserts and cordials. A gastronomic fantasy, the Club Level is also a great way to meet other guests and trade travel stories. Any way you do it, a stay at The Charleston Place is an unparalleled experience that keeps guests coming back year after year. Its unique blend of gracious Southern hospitality and European elegance honors the rich traditions of the city, while boldly looking forward to a bright, modern future. Under its new ownership, we predict the property becomes an even more enviable destination with its focus on experiences that inspire celebration and connection."
