"Why book? This intimate property is one of the most luxurious places to stay while visiting Jackson Hole—and it allows you to experience the rugged beauty of the American West in total comfort. Spend the day skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort or exploring Grand Teton National Park then retreat to this serene hideaway to recharge for the next day’s adventures. Set the scene Located high atop East Gros Ventre Butte overlooking Jackson, Wyoming, this resort is a quiet yet elegant dwelling enveloped by rugged wilderness. Amangani means “peaceful home” in Sanskrit—and the name fits perfectly; it feels more like a spacious, upscale house than a hotel, with cozy, living room-esque common areas, tall ceilings, and simple, classic finishes. Amangani is located roughly 7,000 feet above sea level—and the property was designed to make the most of this high-elevation perch. Every room has southwest-facing, floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the views of the sprawling Snake River Valley below, and the iconic Tetons above, and the towering Snake River ranges beyond. Outside, the focal point is a massive, heated infinity pool (with an adjacent hot tub) that also faces the prime vantage point, ideal for the region’s stunning orange-and-purple sunsets—even in winter. For all of this and more, multi-generational families, married couples celebrating milestone anniversaries, and celebrities looking for privacy and discretion flock here. The backstory In 1998, Amangani opened as the first North American outpost of the then-burgeoning luxury hotel brand, Aman. Even today, most of the brand's 35 hotels, resorts, and residence developments are located elsewhere around the world—so, for US travelers, Amangani offers a rare chance to experience the brand’s signature version of ultra-luxe hospitality without a passport. Designed by late architect Ed Tuttle, the striking building is long and slender, with two elongated wings on either side of a central hub. The property's three floors are built into the surrounding hillside in order to complement and meld into the mountainous landscape. From the common areas to the suites, Tuttle used the same timeless materials throughout the property: Pacific redwood panels covering the walls and ceilings are offset by sturdy, floor-to-ceiling columns made of Oklahoma sandstone. Rattan chairs with woven cowhide and faux fur are the primary pieces of furniture throughout Amangani—you’ll even find them inside the hotel’s private ski lounge at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Curated pieces of Western-inspired and contemporary artwork dot the walls; black-and-white photographs from Jackson’s Brookover Gallery and mixed-media sculptures created primarily from old newspapers by artist Kate Hunt. The rooms Amangani’s 40 suites range in size from 485- to 780-square-feet, with large terraces or balconies adding to the sense of spaciousness. All of the suites have gas fireplaces, king-sized beds, deep soaker tubs, and plush sitting areas. Though it’s not the largest, the Grand Teton Suite commands the highest price tag for the view; it’s a rare corner suite situated on the far northwest end of the building with a wall of windows—and part of the wraparound balcony—facing Grand Teton, the tallest and most prominent peak in the Teton Range. For even more privacy, the hotel also has three free-standing homes, each with four bedrooms. Food and drink The Grill, Amangani’s dining room-style restaurant, is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu features dishes inspired by the Rocky Mountains, like caribou sausage and elk T-bone steaks. Similarly, Amangani’s signature cocktails are a nod to the surroundings. The Western 75, for instance, is Amangani’s spin on the French 75; it’s made with chamomile-infused gin, vanilla, lemon, and prosecco. In the summer, you can order from the pool or the sun deck. Private dining experiences featuring a five-course tasting menu are available. And, if you’re heading out on an adventure, Amangani’s chefs can pack you a gourmet picnic for breakfast or lunch. There's a small bar just off the lobby, but guests tend to hang out outdoors or in other common areas, where waiters deliver drinks. In the morning, the bar becomes a self-service coffee station with pastries, fruit, and yogurt. In the winter, don’t skip the resort's luscious house-made hot cocoa, which can be topped with marshmallows, rainbows sprinkles, coconut shreds, and white chocolate curls; you can also warm up with some in between runs in Amangani’s private ski lounge. The spa Outdoor adventure is the primary focus here, so after skiing or mountain biking all day the spa is the ideal place to recover. Many of the treatments are available at other Aman properties around the world, but there are a few Amangani-specific offerings, like the 105-minute “Apres Ski Dream” ritual, which includes a peppermint foot scrub and a customized massage with warm basalt stones and amethyst crystals. You can also book private yoga classes, guided meditation sessions, and crystal sound baths. The men’s and women’s locker rooms have their own steam rooms. The neighborhood/area About five miles outside of the town of Jackson, at the top of a winding mountain road, the property situated in a secluded neighborhood among high-end homes and evergreen trees, and beside a ranch-cabin property called Spring Creek Ranch, popular for its horseback riding. The Jackson Hole Airport, a private jet-friendly airport that also offers commercial flights, is roughly 30 minutes away. During ski season, the hotel uses its fleet of luxury vehicles to shuttle guests to and from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, a drive that can take 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. This not a slopeside hotel, so if ski-in, ski-out access is important to you, Amangani probably isn’t the right fit. But if you’re looking for a place that’s central to more than just skiing—with that easy access to the slopes, plus downtown Jackson's famed Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, Grand Teton National Park, and the adjacent National Elk Refuge—Amangani’s location is ideally well-rounded. The service Amangani’s team is polished and discreet. The service skews formal without feeling overly stuffy. For families While there’s no kids’ club, and Amangani’s chic decor feels distinctly adult, the hotel welcomes families with open arms, and suites are plenty large enough for a crib or rollaway bed. (Staff can also turn the wide window bench in every suite into a bed for little ones.) Amangani also offers a wide array of “adventure experiences,” and the tours and activities can be tailored to suit every age. Anything left to mention? Whether you visit in summer or winter, be sure to book the property's signature wildlife tour: A private guide will take you to all the best wildlife-spotting sites in the National Elk Refuge, Grand Teton National Park, and surrounding areas. And, because they’re so experienced at scanning the landscape for hidden animals, they’ll see what your untrained eyes would likely miss—like a wolf snoozing atop the snow in the distance, or a group of bighorn sheep foraging among rocky cliffs. Have a closer look through a spotting scope that the guide will set up and get dialed in for you—all while hearing interesting tidbits about the region’s flora, fauna, and history. Animals sightings might include moose, elk, mule deer, ermine, wolves, foxes, bears (both grizzly and black), bald eagles and other birds of prey, and waterfowl like trumpeter swans."
