"Opening July 21 at 124 Blagden Alley NW, this celebrated cocktail lair makes its long-awaited D.C. debut in the space formerly occupied by Columbia Room. The fourth U.S. outpost and the brand’s first with an outdoor patio, the bar pairs a lightened interior—blond wooden millwork, a center steel-framed door, and a pearly-white marble bar top—with preserved touches such as the iconic mosaic-tiled artwork. Hours run 5 p.m. to midnight Sunday–Wednesday and 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday–Saturday, and cocktails start at $18. The illustrated, art-filled menu guides guests through five drink profiles (from “Elegant & Timeless” to “Rich & Comforting”) plus a zero-proof section; an initial 28-drink lineup will rotate as the team refines a District-centric personality. Standouts on the opening menu include the Damia, an umami-forward martini riff marrying gin with heirloom tomato–infused dry vermouth, a touch of strawberry liqueur, and a dash of funky Jamaican rum, and the Coconut Jam, a rye-based, horseradish- and coconut-tinged riff described as a drier, lighter take on a piña colada. Food offerings lean toward cheffed-up bar snacks—marinated olives, veggies with labneh, spiced nuts—plus tinned fish, a caviar service with a shot of Aquavit, and Uncle Wes’ Drunken Cookies (banana-liqueur chocolate chip cookies served with chilled milk). Death & Co is staffing a 34-person local team recruited from respected D.C. cocktail rooms to help the bar “carve a place” in the community, while national leadership emphasizes building on classic cocktails with modern techniques and gradual program growth." - Evan Caplan
