"Tucked into a tiny Taraval Street space in the Parkside, Stix quietly opened on Black Friday 2019 in a former boba shop near 24th Avenue and has recently exploded on social media, drawing crowds to its compact storefront. Owners Emily Hui and her fiancé—who met working at a local Taiwanese restaurant and were inspired after a trip to Japan—say it’s the only place in San Francisco to get Korean corn dogs in all their meaty, cheesy, crispy, crunchy, deep-fried glory. The corn dogs can be a beef frank, a stick of cheese, or a combo; they’re battered in sweet mochiko rice flour for a chewy, mochi-like texture, rolled in panko, diced crinkle-cut fries, or wavy ramen noodles for extra crunch, dusted with sugar, and finished with drizzles and dips from spicy mayo to honey mustard. Stix also stars a sweet drinks menu—Hui’s personal favorite is the ultra-creamy banana milk with silky pearls—and they pour classic Hong Kong–style milk tea, Thai iced tea, and even dalgona coffee. A recent racist online order left the owners shaken—Hui canceled and refunded the order, turned away a customer who tried to pick it up under another name, and later received a now-removed one-star Yelp review—but sharing the incident on social media prompted an outpouring of support. As a new, small shop the owners ask for patience while they hire and keep up with online orders, but it’s clear Korean hot dogs paired with boba-style drinks are resonating with the neighborhood." - Becky Duffett
