"On 18th Street just north of Washington Avenue in Graduate Hospital, I stopped by a quick-serve Indonesian street-food shop run by brothers Berry The and Beddy Sonie that’s slowly rolling out martabak (sweet and savory stuffed pancakes) and iced coffee drinks. They use original Jakarta recipes and make dairy the star: the batter tastes like it contains a bucket of Indonesian-imported butter, and the finished martabak are thick, spongy pancakes layered with shredded white cheddar, folded into a sandwich, slathered with Dutch butter on the outside, and sliced to share. The light-green pandan martabak manis overflows with white cheddar and sweet corn, while the red velvet version is just as creamy with drizzled condensed milk, melty cream cheese, and broken-up Oreos (one of the few options without white cheddar). For now they’re offering only sweet varieties, but savory martabak telor with cheese and chicken or beef and open-faced “pizzas” with toppings from green-tea Kit Kats to peanut butter are coming. Ices and specialty drinks like cream-cheese coffee and avocado coffee will be added as the menu expands. Portions are enormous and meant to be shared, with martabak priced $11.95–$21.95 (most around $18) and drinks $4–$6. The bright space at 1801 Washington Avenue (formerly Gourmet Wok) is mainly takeout for now with one small table, though more seating, a bar, and stools are planned; the shop opened Aug. 21 and is currently open Tue–Thu and Sun 11 a.m.–8 p.m., and Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–9 p.m." - Rachel Vigoda
