"One of China’s largest chains, with more than 20,000 locations worldwide, Zhengxin Chicken Steak is expanding into the U.S. and is opening a branch in Kearny Mesa’s Convoy Street plaza (replacing Mochinut), joining recently launched outposts in Chicago and Silicon Valley. I note that the menu hinges on chicken “steaks” — marinated chicken breast cutlets coated in panko and fried fresh to order — served with seasoning powders like sweet plum, spicy, and cumin. The chain also offers fried chicken sandwiches, bento boxes filled with basil teriyaki chicken or fried tofu, and snacks ranging from chicken nuggets to sweet potato fries and sesame balls. Beverages include oolong milk tea and rose lychee green tea, while desserts center on aiyu jelly topped with options such as honey boba, mochi, hawthorn flakes, mango, and red beans." - Candice Woo
