"I learned that a longtime Oakland nightlife mainstay on 14th Street will reopen on March 1 under new owners Dawit Kidane and Gibtsawit Abraha, the couple who also own the Ethiopian restaurant Blue Nile; Kidane says things will stay the same and that “Everybody is welcome.” The bar, which served beer and was sometimes called the town’s “living room” from 1999 until it closed in December 2023, had been a red light–lit haven for many patrons but shut after its previous owners, Alfredo Botello, Trevor Latham, and Tim Tolle, cited financial and crime concerns. Under the new ownership the Ruby Room will be open daily from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m." - Paolo Bicchieri
