"I visited a neighborhood gastropub opened by longtime Compton resident Alejandro Villegas on Compton Boulevard near Atlantic Avenue inside the former Las Palmas Restaurant. Boulevard Gastropub was created so locals wouldn’t have to leave Compton for a nice meal and craft beer, and it emphasizes mostly local craft beers and wines — featuring Downtown’s Boomtown Brewery, Gardena’s Eureka Brewing Company and Border X Brewing (Boulevard is the only eatery outside the Gardena brewery that carries it), Hawthorne’s Common Space Brewery, the up-and-coming Los Barbones Cerveceria, and even the Death Row Records IPA collaboration. The kitchen presses its burger patties, makes house aioli, assembles a hefty taco salad with ground beef, cheese, black beans, roasted corn, poblanos and citrus dressing, and offers a Senor Reuben sandwich that substitutes pastrami for corned beef with chipotle aioli and smoked gouda on sourdough. Villegas aims to spotlight smaller breweries and wineries (including selections from Paso Robles and Sonoma), is working to secure outdoor seating, and positions the spot as family-friendly and community-focused; hours are Wed–Thu 3–9 p.m., Sat 3–10 p.m., and Sun 1–5 p.m." - Mona Holmes
