"I spotted a groovy new restaurant near Union Square that opened August 30 on the ground floor of Hotel Zeppelin, taking over Wolfgang Puck’s former Postrio space. Named PLS (short for “peace, love, and soul”) and inspired by the 1960s, it aims for a welcoming, laid-back vibe and positions itself as a casual option for happy hour or dinner, open daily from 4 to 10 p.m. Chef Thomas Weibull of Dirty Habit helms a tight Americana menu built around six smash burgers (including a classic smash topped with American cheese and onions; a blue-cheese riff with Mission fig mayo; and a Korean-inspired version with sharp cheddar and a gochujang barbecue glaze), three sides (fries, pickled vegetables, and chips and guac), and seven over-the-top milkshakes — from basic chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry to decadent options like the Funfetti studded with cake batter and crowned with whipped cream, and the Choco-Nut with a chocolate-rimmed glass, peanut butter, hot fudge, and Reese Pieces. Beverages also include beer, wine, and a list of highball cocktails featuring mezcal, gin, tequila, and rum." - Lauren Saria
