"After mysteriously closing its doors in March, I found that the Washington Avenue sushi restaurant Kukuri is plotting a comeback: the restaurant announced on its Facebook page that it will reopen “in a week or two.” Details remain scarce about why it closed; when it shuttered a notice on the door indicated the locks had been changed and a “for lease” sign was placed in the window, which made it seem like Kukuri might be gone for good. In its short six-month tenure the restaurant had ups and downs — it opened under Shimao Ishikawa, a sushi chef who spent time in Michelin-starred kitchens, but Ishikawa reportedly left and some diners say the quality declined afterward. When Kukuri was at its best, however, it earned raves from Houston diners. I have reached out to Kukuri’s management for more details on the reopening and the reasons for the closure." - Amy McCarthy
