"Built for bottle service and small bites, this Latin and Japanese lounge tucked underneath Mariel in Post Office Square is the kind of spot to go to see and be seen, where an evening is split between sipping cocktails, scanning the room, and taking intensely staged Instagram photos in the bathroom with friends. The Nantucket Bay scallops, featuring soft scallops contrasted with crispy, chewy mochi gnocchi and shiitake mushrooms in a creamy ceviche butter, may be the best dish, while beef empanaditas with soft, dense short rib, tangy blue cheese, and smashed avocado in a tiny empanada shell are ideal for soaking up a few cocktails; the dirty martini, made with olive oil-infused vodka, dry vermouth, brine, and chimichurri oil, leans delightfully savory, and a caramelized banana Old Fashioned suits lingering in the space. On a Tuesday night the crowd skewed young, mostly groups of friends with flashing digital cameras and some couples, yet the room feels more grown-up than its predecessor Mariel Underground, with a 1950s Cuba inspiration carried through tropical prints and Art Deco-mirrored pillars, plus couches and chairs where the dance floor used to be. The music is vibrant but not electronic, and low enough for conversation, and overall this is best used as a drop-in spot for a drink before or after dinner, since the well-executed bites aren’t quite enough for a full meal but the atmosphere is worth soaking in." - Celina Colby
