"Health officials linked a Pennsylvania-based kosher poultry producer's processing facility to a multistate salmonella outbreak that sickened 16 people and killed one in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New York. Investigators found the bacteria at that processing plant and also detected salmonella at a second, unnamed kosher-chicken facility. Rather than ordering brand-wide recalls, the CDC has urged consumers to exercise extreme caution when handling raw chicken—thoroughly sanitizing surfaces it has touched, washing hands after contact with raw meat, and ensuring poultry is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F before consumption." - Nikita Richardson
