"Most cha chaan tengs in SF are in the Sunset and Chinatown. Letssweet is the only one in SoMa, and it’s doing a damn good job. It pulls off the classic Hong Kong diner-style dishes listed on their poster-sized laminated menus—the standouts being the generous bowl of wonton noodle soup and peanut butter-filled french toast. And the efficient service makes this a great spot for an in-and-out meal. Mark off what you want on the menus with the provided dry-erase marker, and dishes arrive in a few minutes. Just be sure to ask about their pastries and daily dessert special before asking for the check. If there are any portuguese egg tarts left, consider it fate. Food Rundown Curry Fish Balls A shareable starter that comes 10 to an order. Each ball is satisfyingly springy with just a little bit of snap-back. The sauce could use a bit more heat, but we’d still get this again. photo credit: Patrick Wong HK-Style French Toast Crispy with just a little bit of crunchy skirt on the outside, with a custardy center and a layer of peanut butter running right through the middle. It’s a must-order. The only miss is the pad of cold butter served on the side that needs some residual heat from the bread to soften up. PlayMute video credit: Patrick Wong Wonton Noodle Soup A huge portion. You’ll need to dig around the nest of noodles floating on the top to find the wontons, but it’s well worth the excavation. The wonton wrapper is boiled until they’re slick and the filling is the texture of a never-before-used stress ball. photo credit: Patrick Wong Portuguese Egg Tart There’s a limited supply of these, so be sure to ask about them as soon as you sit down. The tops could use a bit more caramelization, but the filling is smooth and the crust is layered and flaky. We’d swing by just to grab one of these. photo credit: Patrick Wong Iced Lemon Tea A tad too sweet, but still something that’s required to wash everything down with." - Patrick Wong
