"A slice of pizza might be the go-to walking snack for New Yorkers, but we’d like to make the case for onigiri. Specifically, for the ones at Onigiri Tanakaya, a pop-up-turned-konbini in Gramercy. Their onigiri are served still warm, with classic fillings like cooked salmon, salty umeboshi, and chicken karaage. They also have takeaway sushi sets, and hand rolls for under $5: our favorite is the negimaguro, a combo of almost sweet tuna and sharp green onions that meld together nicely. If you’re in the area, the onigiri here is a great pick me up, or an easy lunch, along with some Japanese snacks. There are a couple of metal tables, but the benches at Stuyvesant Square or Union Square are just a block away in either direction. photo credit: Will Hartman photo credit: Will Hartman photo credit: Will Hartman" - Will Hartman
