"Chotto Matte is a Union Square rooftop bar that bills itself as a “multisensory experience” and “thrilling visual journey,” which is a polite way to say that anyone with less than 10,000 followers on Instagram will probably hate it here. The Nikkei spot is an international chain (the other US location is in Miami) that specializes in doling out $400 checks for a meal that’ll leave you hungry. The Japanese-Peruvian food is decent at best, but there are better places to spend your money. photo credit: Chotto Matte photo credit: Chotto Matte photo credit: Chotto Matte photo credit: Chotto Matte photo credit: Chotto Matte To get to your seat, you’ll walk past a stone-faced DJ cordoned off in an elevated booth like it’s a parade float and he’s being trapped against his will. Oh, and that seat—it’s a booth made of denim fabric (complete with fringe), positioned next to a water station fashioned out of some sort of rock. The odds that you make an appearance in the background of a micro-influencer’s story are close to 100%, so show up in your hottest sheer top and prepare to smize for the duration of your meal. As for food, some of it is solid, like the spicy tuna over crispy rice and aburi toro that’s blowtorched tableside. Other dishes, like the seemingly pre-frozen $22 gyoza, are in no world worth the price. So just come for drinks if you want to check out the skyline views, bob your head to the DJ, and join the tourists who saw this place on their For You Page—or any time you’re desperate to pull out a sparkly matching set and take a sexy birthday picture with a pisco sour in hand. Otherwise, there are other rooftop bars and restaurants in the area we’d send you to first. @infatuation_sf Chotto Matte is an international chain that specializes in doling out $400 checks for a meal that’ll leave you hungry. #InfatuationSF #EEEEEATS #chottomatte #rooftop #rooftops #sfrestaurants #CapCut ♬ Electronica Loop track(1305467) - Purple Sound Keep scrolling for the food rundown Food Rundown photo credit: Julia Chen Spicy Tuna Crispy Sushi It’s spicy tuna over crispy rice. You can’t really go wrong. If you’re coming here for a drink at the bar and willing to part with $27.50, these will do the trick as a cheeky little snack. photo credit: Julia Chen Nikkei Gyoza A plate of five gyoza that aren't much better than something you could get out of the freezer aisle. Feel free to skip. photo credit: Julia Chen O-Toro Aburi Sashimi If the words “flamed tableside” set your algorithm-chasing heart aflutter, go ahead and snag one of these for the table. The tiny pats of duck butter melt nicely into the tuna slices, which end up with a smoky sear. Plus, you’ll get to post a blowtorch video. Pisco Sour The cocktails here are excellent and, surprisingly, all $20 or under. Order a vanilla-y pisco sour and take a picture with your egg white foam mustache. photo credit: Julia Chen Wagyu Sirloin Chewy and overwhelmed by truffle. You deserve better steak than this." - Julia Chen
