"Free chips, salt rims, and ungodly amounts of tequila—this is why you’re at this Mexican restaurant in the Richmond. Tia Margarita has been around since 1963, and continues to serve Mexican comfort staples on platters that are roughly the size of a life preserver. And while your affection for the spreads of tortillas, carnitas, and cheesy beans is directly correlated to the number of margaritas you’ve downed, you’ll still have fun. Whether you’re cramming a birthday group into a curved booth or swapping “back in the day” stories with a regular at the weathered wooden bar, a night here is always a good time. Food Rundown photo credit: Julia Chen Carnitas Plate A meal at Tia Margarita is all about a platter like this. It’s got a heap of shredded pork, beans with a melted cheese sweater, and rice, plus pickled red onions to cut through the decadence. Chile Rellenos Battered, fried, and absolutely gushing with cheese. As they should be. Enchiladas Verde Fine, but nothing you’ll fall asleep thinking about. Margarita It’s a decent margarita, as classic as it gets. We shouldn’t have to tell you, but you’re ordering at least one." - Julia Chen
