"Dove-grey service jackets, expertly mixed Manhattans, gold-framed portraits on wood-panelled walls: Hy’s is an old-school steakhouse in every way. It’s been a beloved Downtown institution since the ‘60s, thanks to a menu of classics done with finesse, all centered around Canada Prime Grade beef. These are well-marbled, 28-day-aged steaks that cut like butter, finished with a char that locks in every ounce of flavour. The sides pull their weight too, especially the glazed and pecan-studded carrots and the creamed spinach, which is lush instead of gloopy. Tableside signatures like steak diane and bananas foster are flambéed in front of you, briefly lighting up the otherwise dimly lit room. For a more casual way (and affordable) way in, there’s the excellent happy hour, where you can get deals like $8 highballs." - Michelle Sproule
