21 Best Restaurants in Vancouver

"Richly hued carpets, cozy upholstered booths, wood paneled walls, white tablecloths: This is a classic steakhouse, but one that's more opulent than most. One peek inside—go on, check it out, even if it’s only for a quick cocktail and an order of the incredible cheese toast during happy hour—and you’ll be transported to a place of true luxury. If you're staying for a special-occasion dinner, order the 28-day aged Canada Prime, well-aged beef, cooked perfectly to order, plus all the classic steakhouse sides (tableside Caesar salad, creamed spinach). This classic, yet contemporary steakhouse has been a Vancouver institution for more than 60 years. Servers are attentive and professional, and their tableside preparation of favorites like Caesar salad and Bananas Foster add dazzle to your meal with old-school flair." - Guy Saddy, Nicole Schnitzler

This steakhouse offers a warm and refined atmosphere, with dark, tasteful décor that gives it a polished yet comfortable feel. We stopped in for lunch and were impressed by the quality of the food—crispy, flavorful cheese sticks and a tender, well-seasoned steak kebab that was cooked just right. Our server was exceptionally friendly and talkative in the best way—engaging and attentive without being intrusive, which really added to the experience. While it was a lunch visit, the menu prices and overall ambiance suggest a more upscale dining experience, making it a great option for business lunches, special midday outings, or simply treating yourself to something a bit nicer than the usual lunch fare. Overall, a great experience with quality food and standout service.

Amazing service and food! We arrived early for our dinner reservations and enjoyed Happy Hour upstairs. Karen was Amazing and took all my food allergies very seriously. The happy hour cocktails (2 ounces) for only $11. Great price. We made our way downstairs for dinner where Andy was our waiter. He was personable and informative. Our dinner was absolutely fantastic. The room is amazing and unchanged since the early 60s. We will absolutely be back. 5 stars all around! Great work!

Our first visit to Hy’s, and we love it!! The atmosphere is great, and I love how open the space is, you can see chef cooking steak in the kitchen. Their cheese toast is really classic, and onion soup I like!!👍🏻 Steaks are great, price not too expensive too.

I have to say this has been one of the most pleasant experiences I've had dining in Vancouver. The ribeye steak with the Pitsburgh charing was perfection. Our server was amazing. It rivaled any other steaks I've had, even in other continents. Highly recommend.

Google
We’ve been to the one in Whistler several times and thought we’d try the one in Vancouver. Both are fantastic, the only way this one trumps Whistler is the cool building it’s in, and its history. It is two levels and there are plenty of intimate dining spots. We can recommend the French Onion soup and the New York steak sandwich. Hys is great if you enjoy fantastic steak and red wine.

Taking my family here for their first time. Reservations made with ease with a phone call prior to confirm and text which was great for reminding. Meter parking available in front, near the restaurant and meter parking lot available too around within walking distance nearby. Greater upon entry with coat check in available. Seated and helped by Jeff for the evening. He was great in talking to and personable but respectful of our private time for dinner. Drinks - * Sun Spritz * Purple Reign * Caribbean Coast Appetizers - * Crab Cake * Bread Cheese Toast (highly recommended) * Caesar Salad (fresh table side made) Entrees _ * Bone in Rib Steak 20oz * Filet Steak 8oz * Featured dinner of the night with Trio steaks sampler (3oz of filet, rib & NY) with prawns Intimate, quiet and nice atmosphere experience.

****The size between 8oz and 24oz**** This 24oz dry-aged rib steak(on the left) was $196 and the 8oz of fillet(on the right) was $67. Can someone explain? Why is 24oz look like 12oz? It was my mother's birthday and my parents were very disappointed at me for such a tiny portion for $263 of steak in total. A total waste!!!

We went for a birthday dinner and tried their cheese toast, salad, Steak Neptune, and Bananas Foster. My favorites were the cheese toast and the steak. Wasn’t impressed with the salad or the dessert. I’ll definitely revisit, but I’ll probably skip the desserts next time.

Yelp
The service and atmosphere was amazing! Great experience. Our server was professional! The food was decent. Wellington was in need of a little more seasoning but steaks were tender! The bathroom (I used before leaving) had pee all over the floor. The gentleman who used it before me left the seat up and didn't flush Overall it was a a good experience but steaks tho tender could have more flavor!

Yelp
Like its sister restaurant, Gotham Steakhouse, Hy's offers a terrific afternoon happy hour in its bar. You can get a multi-course feast of snacks, cocktails, and wine for well under $200 per couple, which is much less than lunch or dinner here. We started with the prawn cocktail, four large and very fresh prawns served with an excellent cocktail sauce. The we had the "famous" cheese toast, which is butter-grilled with a layer of cheese on top, and served in aluminum foil to keep it warm. Our mains were the mini lobster rolls, which came on grilled feather-light brioche, and the prime rib sliders, the most substantial dish. Each slider included a wonderful onion ring, encouraging us to make a note to order onion rings as a side next time. In addition to the great drink prices such as 40% off sparkling wines during happy hour, the dessert menu prices are also very reasonable. We had tableside Bananas Foster and Irish Coffee. Both were prepared in true classic fashion. We received superb service from Antonella. The bar area is cozy, with only a few tables, but I think I like the ambiance at Gotham's larger bar better. But both are excellent choices for an afternoon meal.

Yelp
Food and service was excellent but not sure how they can justify those prices. There were three of us with a $150 gift certificate (given to us) and it didn't cover half of the bill. That is without any alcohol. $14 for cheese toast, $22 for a caesar salad that served 1 1/2, $75 for Steak Neptune. Although the ambiance was excellent and the service great I just wonder why people would not just go to the Keg which equals it in every way except for the prices.

Yelp
My favorite place for steak in Vancouver. My review from years ago still holds up. A classic. Excellent service from Benjamin last night. Romantic date night location a classic.

Yelp
Best meal we had in Vancouver! Ambiance, low lighting, romantic and many options to choose from. Hurray 29th Wedding Anniversary Sophia did a fantastic job explaining menu. Scallop, Steak, Lobster and Banana Foster- Highly recommend.

Yelp
We enjoyed our dinner here in downtown Vancouver! Started off with their famous cheese toast and escargot, both of which were rich and satisfying. My wife and daughter both ordered their halibut special that was prepared well and came with delicious prawn risotto. I had their filet a la Hy's which okay, it's basically a good pot roast. Finished with their key lime pie that was light and tart, but the crust was a tad overdone and hard to break. Our server Kevin was welcoming and attentive, and had lots of good suggestions for us for our appetizers and dessert. He patiently explained the menu items and how they were prepared, and brought our drinks quickly. He made our daughter's birthday dinner extra special. As far as ambiance if you like that dimly-lit underground gangster vibe then you'll feel right at home. Personally I like that with steakhouses and we were seated at a corner table in the back where we could people-watch.

Yelp
Went here for the first time a few weeks back, and it was a great experience. Our server was very polite and gave good suggestions on different items to try. The food was delicious and everything came out at a good time. Definitely recommend this place is your looking for some good appetizers and a good steak.

Yelp
Hy ended up being my second steakhouse visit in Vancouver after a disappointing first stop elsewhere (which traumatized me for a bit); alas, traditions demand I eat steak and drink red wine for my birthday. Fortunately, this was a pretty nice experience in comparison. The steaks were properly cooked as requested, the mashed potatoes were smooth, and the cheese bread certainly lived up to its hype. The tartare was slightly disappointing; however, I would say that the extensive wine list and quality of service made up for it.

Yelp
Very mediocre and kinda disappointing. To give the context: we came to celebrate my birthday, my husband put it in the notes when he made the reservation. The hostess wished me a happy birthday when we came in, then our waitress asked whose birthday it is and I said mine. About 4 other people around us had a birthday, all of them got a dessert with a candle except for me. When I went to the restroom husband talked to our waitress and she said she didn't know we had a birthday (how is it possible if we had a conversation about it right as we sat down and we ordering drinks?). She ended up bringing is CRUSHED CHOCOLATE and a candle and said "here's some after dinner chocolate for You" what the hell is that? So all the other guests get dessert and I get chocolate- very interesting customer service. Now let's move onto food: Super famous Cheese toast is nothing special just bread with cheese Table service ceaser salad was quite delicious I got filet mignon steak which was delicious My husband got a ribeye and it was terrible, first time it was burned and so over salted it was impossible to eat and we asked them to redo it. Second time it was better, but still way too salty. We also tried table service banana foster (since we didn't get a birthday dessert) which was delicious. Overall this restaurant is not worth it, the quality of the food and service does not justify the high price.

Yelp
Very good food and service. Good job Dan!Good steak, chocolate milk, and cheese toast.

Yelp
So sad to have been seated by a couple and theit estimated 3 yr old jumping and screaming in the booth the entire time that not only was our dinner unenjoyable, we left as fast as possible. Not a single manager or worker standing within 4 feet stepped up to address the disruption or offer us new seating.... We spent over $200 on drinks and an app and couldn't stand to spend more as the entire ambience was disrupted by the inconsideration of the staff as well as the couple... otherwise the beef Wellington would have been enjoyable...Vancouver on every level was fabulous including service until Hy's but the Fairmont Hotel spectacular!

Patrick D.

Yelp
Not the best cut of meat I've had but... Blair our server was fantastic! He made you want to pull him up a chair and add him to the conversation! Highly recommend the cheese toast... it just melts in your mouth!

Yelp
Absolutely Impeccable ! My Bestie and I went for supper it was absolutely hands down the BEST I have ever had. I am a stickler for service and our wonderful waiter was Andy. We will be asking for him again ! I like salt my best friend does not - I was absolutely amazed at how I went completely salt free during this mean a FIRST. My friend also said the seasoning was just "perfect" WOW how both of us with different tastes were completely satisfied ! THAT I consider a work of art from the Chef. The food, the ambience especially the service was impeccable. The food was absolutely perfect, appetizers the world famous cheese toast (this is an absolute MUST), we had shrimp cocktail and garlic shrimp, main courses (chicken for me, my friend had the steak and lobster) dessert bananas foster and key lime pie. You want somewhere perfect this is the place to go. We will be back very soon and again MANY thanks to our Server Andy - This gent is a ROCKSTAR. I absolutely loved this place !!! 20/10

Yelp
That cheese bread is legit! Gotta get it! Steak took a long time to get served, and was under, not very well seasoned. Everything else was good. Good customer service. Great dessert. Cocktail was very small.

Yelp
I had happy hour here in their lounge. We ordered the cheese toast and a Negroni from their happy hour menu and also the escargot from their regular menu. The Negroni was nice and strong. The cheese toast was a bit more disappointing than I had hoped it to be. It was served hot. It didn't do any cheese pulling but it was a nice savoury snack and did go well with alcohol. The escargot was served PIPING HOT (beware as I burned the roof of my mouth). It was deliciously buttery and went so well with the bread. Would order the escargot and the Negroni again. I love the atmosphere in their lounge on the first floor. Very laid back and cozy. Dark but relaxing. Would come back for more drinks

Yelp
it's the worst experience I had ever with HY's. I order one T bone steak but it' burned. It taste really bitter no matter inside or outside. The then cook redo one for us.however, the second one has no taste at all. That's definitely not HY's quality and not worth the price at all. The server explained to me said although it is bitter but it is the charcoal. I don't think anyone will like the taste of bitter.

Yelp
Five Star Steakhouse Atmosphere and five star attentive high-quality service. The food is pricy but of good quality and well prepared. I'm going four stars because the fries are noticably simpler and not as tasty as another landmark Vancouver steakhouse (a few blicks away), I just recently visited, and they no longer offer a Thousand Island or Louis dressing. I went there over the more modern gimmick restaurants for the classics, which unfortunately revealed thousand island dressing has been exciled. I need Thousand Island dressing saved and brought back, and available again as a shrimp cocktail dipping option and especially as a salad dressing choice. Otherwise, I won't visit as often, because that is something a classic Stealhouse should have. Nostalgia lost without it. Bring it back, and we're back to 5 stars.

Jack J.

Yelp
The place has been around for awhile, the food was great, the Beef Wellington was fantastic, great old school streak house vibe , good looking bar with beautiful mahogany wood covers most of the restaurant , i am definitely recommend this restaurant, i might have given it a 5 star but the up sale was a bit annoying by our waiter, could hear him do the same at every table which I guess is his job but not enjoyable.

Marcus R.

Yelp
OK it's been 6 months since my dinner at Hy's and it still angers me to this day. The best part of the meal was cheese toast. Yes, you read that right. All four of us ordered steak and every single one tasted like a dirty grill. Any other time we would've sent them back but our server was so awkward and uncomfortable to talk to (interrupted us, way in our personal space) that we just wanted to get out of there ASAP. This was the worst meal I had in all of 2024. 0 stars.

Kenna G.

Yelp
The food at Hy's was fabulous. The cheese toast is one of the best things I've ever eaten, seriously. My steak was also amazing. The service was incredible. A wonderful treat meal.

Yelp
A Vancouver icon with a well deserved reputation. Honestly don't know why this place isn't Michelin stared. Service was absolutely impeccable, the food as usual was amazing. The cheesy bread as usual was amazing.

Yelp
Go to the Keg. What was Hys in Vancouver is over. Sub par steak for the price and you don't even get a potato choice anymore. Seriously go to the Keg.

Neave B.

Yelp
Great service, food is always consistent and well priced. Would recommend #contestentry

Yelp
We recently celebrated our 34th anniversary at Hy's. Karen our server was outstanding. We kept her busy with three table side orders and she executed each beautifully while keeping the rest of the customers taken care of at the same time in a tiny room where the tableside cart took up a lot of room. Her enthusiasm for her job added greatly to the night. We tried many items and all were good. Some things that stood out... The cocktail sauce on the prawns was delicious, the carrots were devine, steak tartare was tasty, filets were very tender and cooked to perfection which is hard to do on a 6oz filet. Banana foster was delightful and quite the show! My husband loved his Caesar salad. Cheese bread was what you would expect, a comfort food from the 50's. The only thing that was a miss was the cacio e pepe. The noodles were over cooked and the sauce was too runny, but we are cacio e Pepe snobs and try it wherever we go. So we know it's a hard dish to make. They had Sazerac rye so the Manhattan cocktail was perfection. A great place to celebrate a special occasion! Thank you Karen!

Yelp
Hys Cheese Toast, is by far, the best cheese toast that I have ever had in my entire life, in any country or home that I've been to. 100% Must have! My profile photo, says it all. It's actually a liquid, for 10 dollars on top of the bread,if you ever get it to go, when cooked gets that perfectly browned layer of cheese that somehow magically floats up to the top when it's cooked. Amazing! I love the restaurant, most menu items, it's a fantastic restaurant,,, But, hmmm, did I mention their cheese toast?
google avatar

Doron W.

Yelp
The service was excellent. However the food was very sub par. Cheezy toast to start reminded me of wonderbread. I had pepper steak with fries. She had Filet with fries. The fries were limp and soft. They did bring us a new batch which was much better. My striploin was thin, and the fat was not rendered. Her filet was thin and not appealing. Ambiance was great. This is my 4th time here, and in the past it was always perfect, but this time it was bad, to be honest. A new chef perhaps?

Yelp
Quick Summary Very solid steakhouse that's slightly above the Ruth's Chris / Lawry's tier. The most memorable dishes were the cheese toast and the Bananas Foster. The steaks were good, and surprisingly liked the filet the best out of the cuts Food- 5 stars Cheese toast- this is a must for their appetizer. It's fantastic Clam chowder- this was on their specials of the day. It was good, especially on a rainy day. Very fresh seafood in their chowder Featured steak with peppercorn sauce- luckily was able to try the NY strip, ribeye, and filet with this dish that was on their special. I'm usually a fan of more fatty cuts like the ribeye, but surprisingly, I enjoyed the filet the most (that is usually a rarity for me) Bananas Foster- dessert and a show. The dessert was splendid and always nice to see fire at your table Service- 5 stars Fast and attentive. Service was impeccable as expected Bottom Line It's a very good steakhouse that is slightly above the Ruth's Chris / Lawry's tier. You're going to great meal whenever you come here. Highly recommend reservations.

Yelp
Always remember to look up when you're out & about! I was reminded of this when I actually looked up high as I was passing Hy's Steakhouse + Cocktail Bar! Heard about it, never been & always wondered! My brain finally clued in one day a few weeks ago - ooh this is Hy's! I've passed by several times while walking around downtown & never paid attention! What an intriguing, eye catching unique building!!! On top of that it's a - stand alone! Historic indeed since 1955 (at this location since the 60s), why have I never eaten here!?? Like fine wine this restaurant is timeless. To be honest I wouldn't have appreciated Hy's in my 20s (which was just a shy couple years ago - LMAO). I was still maturing & figuring out life - to busy to actually sit down & enjoy a classic steak on a magic night out. The brick & iron siding had me thinking - dungeons & dragons! Perhaps GOT anyone!?! Today I brought out the E.B.T. (see my Elise Steakhouse review for acronym meaning) card! I knew tonight was going to be a classy, elegant & supreme night - I pulled out my GQ bespoke suit! Someone even asked for my autograph - oh that was me looking in the mirror! LMAO!!! Located in central downtown Vancouver, plenty of parking available or use the valet service. The general clientele of Hy's appear older & look like they've been coming here for years. We started with drinks - the Dark + Stormy & Vesper - very delightful cocktails - cheers! For dinner we had scallops (so delicious), sablefish (amazing) & peppercorn New York steak - a juicy tender easy to chew steak! By the way, I can confirm that the Cheese Bread is to die for - it's truly irresistible!!! The cheesecake dessert - oh my one of the best I've ever had!!! The bottom level of Hy's is more historic to how it was in the 60s - the upper level was modernized about 5 years ago & has had some up to date significant touches. Happy Hour is held here upstairs Monday to Friday. Hy's is truly one of Vancouvers top historic restaurants. Make a reservation ASAP!

Yelp
Alexi was a fabulous server. They food was outstanding. I've never had a better Caesar Salad in my life. The ambiance was just beautiful. I felt very comfortable and would be back again. Thank you! It was an exceptional experience.

Yelp
My wife and I had decided to come here for dinner last minute during our last day in Vancouver. We were greeted sat down quickly without a reservation and our server Chris was amazing. His food recommendations for the cheese bread and asparagus were delicious and table side service for the Caesar salad and Banana foster was an amazing experience. The steaks were cooked to our requests. We will be coming back again next time we're in Canada.

Yelp
If you're looking for an evening of fine dining with immaculate service, this place is a good choice. As it's a place that has been there for decades as a high end restaurant. I've been watching it to see if it will evolve. This is because we've seen how other similar style restaurants let their stalemate food and service lead them to their own demise (eg. William Tell). Hy's has consistently been the trusty establishment. Sure, it's dark and has the old school look, but the service was quite pleasant. It's been quite a while for me since my last visit. And so I wasn't familiar with the menu which they have updated. But don't go looking for any modern or fusion dish. It's still about the steak. If you're there, you splurge. At least go for the prime grade steaks aged 28 days. They are so tender and tasty. The Chateaubriand for two that's served table side is a good show if you want to impress out of town guests or your soul mate. If not, then go for the banana foster. Perfectly complemented with butter, brown sugar, and orange juice, when flambeed with rum, this dessert goes down with perfection with vanilla ice cream.

Yelp
We gave Hy's a second chance after hearing many many positive reviews. The first time we went here years ago, the medium-rare steak was over cooked that we had to ask them to redo. Upon getting it the second time, it was so burnt even the server noticed it and had them make it a third time. In the end, it was so bad that we asked them to just take it away. ~ Bread Cheese Toast $11.95 Clam Chowder Soup of the Day$12.95 Filet Mignon Wellington $63.95 Porterhouse 22oz $89.95 Mashed Potatoes $12.95 Brussel Sprouts $14.95 ~ The cheese toast was definitely a must order, with their creamy cheesy and crispy toast. It was super satisfying. Clam Chowder was just alright as I've had better ones. But it cant go wrong! It was our first time trying the filet mignon wellington, and it was just ok. The steak was a little dry, so it wasnt very tender. I thought the foie gras and puff pastry would lock in the juice and flavour, but it was a little disappointing. The puff pastry and foie gras was tasty though. Their porterhouse on the other hand was made really well. Super tender and juicy. We all enjoyed this dish a lot. Mashed potatoes was creamy and good. But I really like the ones at Elisa better . Brussel Sprouts was very crispy, dipped with the sour cream and its delicious. Overall, it was a lot better than our first experience.

Yelp
I'm basing the rating on the food not the service as the server was really nice and attentive. Also very nice of the gentleman who made sure our glass of water was filled. We both ordered the steak Neptune. The steak was delicious and cooked to perfection however it was pretty small and lukewarm along with the sides it tasted like it was sitting there for a while which made it less appealing. Which kind of makes sense cause once we finished our cheese toast we got our steaks pretty fast. The sides were a miss. Mash potatoes and asparagus were pretty bland for a place like this. The cheese toast tasted exactly as I expected nothing too special and the onion rings tasted like something you'd find at a more affordable generic chain restaurant except it was much more greasy not as crispy and way overpriced. The ambience was nice though.

Hector D.

Yelp
This is the best restaurant in Vancouver that I've been to in the past week for vacation. Alysia was very nice, she helped us get dinner. This restaurant has the best steak I've ever had before. This restaurant looks so nice it looks fancy. Everyone was nice. The Filet Mignon was so good.

Yelp
Visited: May 2 2019 Look, this place isn't cheap so let me start off by telling you to go to Costco (if you can) and get yourselves some Hy's gift cards (pay $80 for $100 value) before dining here. Your wallet will thank you. The building facade is a bit quirky - it looked like a medieval castle. Inside is more of the same, very dark and reminiscent of a dungeon. It really is like a gentlemen's club. On to the food. The cheese toast is a must. One order has 3 full slices, halved with 6 pieces in total. We were a table of 4 and doubled our order so that nobody gets hurt fighting over cheese toasts. I'm not a huge steak eater but I was told they have the best steaks in town. I ordered the filet mignon (medium) and opted for the sautéed potatoes with onions. The steak was cooked to perfection and it tasted even better. Definitely lived up to the reputation. Quality is top notch. My colleagues ordered the marinated steak salad and a steak sandwich. They all enjoyed their meals thoroughly. All steaks were cooked to their liking, no complaints. We ended our meal with the banana foster. For $14.95, we get 4 slices of bananas and 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was prepared table side and our waiter put on a show flambéing the bananas with Bacardi rum. Dessert was delicious; too bad it's not socially acceptable to lick the plate clean. Will definitely come back and try the dinner menu next time. Ordered: Cheese toast x 2 Filet mignon Steak salad x 2 Open-faces Steak sandwich with side salad Banana foster

Yelp
Thank god we had a gift card cause otherwise I would not pay for this food. Nice rooms, nice staff as well but the food is absolutely underwhelming. WTF is with "famous" cheese bread. It was soggy and came with tin foil on it, some old Asian grandma lady trotted it out from the kitchen too - that was weird.

Yelp
Had a great dinner served by Dan last night. We ordered a plethora of food and all items were delicious. Mains: Pork chop/bone in steak/filet steak/ roasted chicken/1 lb lobster tail Appys: Cheese toast/ Caesar salad/ calamari / carpaccio Sides: mashed potato/ baked potato/ creamed corn / sautéed mushrooms / cacio e Pepe Dessert: banana fosters I think it's quite important to note that not only the steak was good but also the pork and chicken delivered. Since we had a few people in the table that didn't eat red meat, it was nice to know quality wasn't compromised even though they're known for their steak. Not one bad thing to say. Perhaps maybe just the consistency of the bernaise was not what I'm used to seeing. Flavour and execution was perfect for the cook on our steaks, the cocktails were spot on, and dessert was simple but delightful. Definitely a great experience.

Yelp
This place did its level best for us. I made a request on my open table reservation for a nice private booth to celebrate our night, and they gave us just that. Even though, we were half-an-hour or more late (unusual for me, but it was a special occasion). The server welcomed us, gave us a little history on the place. One of Vancouver's oldest apparently. Of course it is a chain. Also, turns out that all of the top steak houses in Vancouver are owned by siblings of the same family. Nice bit of background info. Then we proceeded to have some polite banter, and then he gave us the room we needed to enjoy our night. Didn't get in the way at all, but we were also never left feeling unattended to. Our server was a Ninja! I don't know how he did it. Do they have hidden cameras? I don't know, but it was excellent. I just want to say, the service was great, it didn't go unnoticed! And I want to thank you for it (yes, my feelings were reflected in the tip. I left a BIG ONE! More than I could afford, to be honest, but he deserved it). Porterhouse steak was perfect for the two of us to share, with a side of lobster. We like a bit of surf with our turf. The famous cheese toast was a great start, which is a pretty standard thing to get at Hy's. My grand-mother's cheese on toast is a tad better, she was famous for it around our household, but that's just my bias. I won't let you have her recipe.

Yelp
We were at Hy's earlier tonight (Sept 2) and unfortunately it was disappointing. We've dined at high-quality steakhouses roughly 100 times in the past decade and know what to expect (and were at Hy's 3 months ago and had a much better experience then). This time a bunch of things went wrong: - The server completely forgot to ring in my Caesar salad. He was not writing down the order. I specifically said that I would like to start with the Caesar salad, in those words (not mumbling it, etc.) The salad never came. I got worried when about 20 min had gone by and then once the steak knife was placed I knew he had forgotten :( - My steak was thin and tasted only like char, despite my ordering it rare. The center was rare, but outside had heavy char marks which were likely responsible for the bad taste. One of the worst tasting steaks over $50 I've had. I couldn't taste the meat orange seasoning because the burnt flavor was so overpowering. - The chocolate bourbon cake was also disappointing. The ice cream quantity was about 2 tablespoons and the cake itself had a gritty texture like the ingredients had not been mixed together fully. It will be hard to come back for another visit after this one :(

Yelp
My partner and I came here for a birthday celebration as we are both big fans of steak and Hy's certainly lived up to its recommendations! We got their scallops to start and they were light, soft, and a great palate cleanser. For dinner, we got the steak fillet and the New York steak to share and they were grilled to perfection! We both got medium-rare and it came out looking exactly like that. If I had to choose between the two, the steak fillet maybe wins out just very slightly with its combination of flavours. The mashed potatoes that it came with was fluffy and paired well with the steak. We got a cocktail to share and they ended up splitting it for us which was very nice of them to do! Hys is quickly becoming one of our go to steak restaurants in Vancouver.

Yelp
During COVID-19, Hy's has Take Out option priced at 20% off their regular menu and a Hy's-At-Home option to cook the food at home. You can place orders on their website. Below is my experience with Hy's before these pandemic days: A special occasions restaurant with its $$$$ price tag. Hy's has been around forever it seems, located on prime downtown real estate in a building of its own. Our group of 6 came for lunch but wanted to try their steaks, which they didn't have on their lunch menu, but we could order from their regular menu. We shared (best way to go to get to try dishes cost effectively): - Cheese bread ($10.95 for 2 thick, cheesy slices) - Served warm, its tasty but also very filling/heavy with the thick toast, crusted cheese, and oil. At the price, I wouldn't get it again although I know it's a favorite for many. - Bone-in Rib-Eye 32oz (Black Angus - $127.95) - Nice char to the rib eye, great fat ratio, good flavors. - Filet 12oz (Prime 28 day aged Steak - $87.95) - The waitress said the aged prime steaks was what Hy's is known for and how the way they grill gives it extra flavor. The meat was very tender (as a filet should be), and the meat did have a nice woody flavor to it. - Various sides: Onion Rings, Creamy Spinach, Fries - All were good accompaniments. - Hy's Cheesecake - Thought we'd try out the dessert they put their name to but it was actually the more disappointing of the desserts we got. - Pistachio Creme Brulee - This was a nice dessert with good pistachio flavors (usually I can't taste much pistachio in pistachio desserts). - Key Lime Pie - I'm normally not a key lime pie person but my colleagues enjoyed this dessert a lot. Service was friendly but slow. It was hard to get service as our waitress was serving so many tables in our section, and a lot of dishes that were served tableside required a lot of her time. Felt like they could have been shortstaffed. We had giftcards we got for 20% off at Costco so be on the lookout for them so you can treat yourself to more steak with the savings!

Yelp
What we ordered: Bone-in Rib Steak (20 oz.) with a baked potato, cheese toast for two, Porterhouse (20 oz.) and their cheesecake for dessert! Atmosphere: This place was beyond anything I've ever had before; the epitome of luxurious eating right here. From the moment you walk in, it's as if you've been brought back in time to the Victorian era. It's not too loud, and you can enjoy quite a bit of privacy if you get a seat in a booth. About the food: we got the cheese toast and honestly, my brain melted from how delicious it was (apparently some people only eat cheese toast throughout their entire evening). The steaks were all amazing as well. My bone-in rib steak was amazingly tender (and actually the baked potato was amazing!!!). The porterhouse came with a filet and a New York strip cut, cooked to medium rare perfection. Surprisingly, the cheesecake was the most average out of everything we had, but it was still tasty. Note: they do charge for still water though, so if you don't really want to fork out that bit, you can ask for tap water. This was my first time at such a high-end restaurant, and I can safely say it was life changing.

Yelp
I've been to Hy's (here and elsewhere) many many times over the years but this was the first time in about a year. Went for lunch on a weekday and it had its high (pun intended) Nd low points. Oddly enough for 2 pm it was surprisingly busy. They are not doing happy hour due to COVID which I get. From my recollection, prices have gone up - again, I get it. Service was good and what you expect from a steakhouse/fine dining. I feel like the wine markup also increased but not certain of that. The food... Cheese toast - on point as always and amazing. I've never understood why Hotham is not as good. I rarely order steak since I'm picky about how it's cooked and temp and I'm happy to do it at home for a fraction of the price. French onion soup was well executed - right amount of gruyere, rich broth and not overly salty. The disappointment was the beef dip but that may be due to a difference in style and preference. I like my beef dip mid rare or so. This was not. I think the menu said they sous code and finish on the flat top. I assume they use the chain or other piece of whole tenderloin when you break it down. For me, the beef was overcooked - it was dark and crispy. Fortunately the jus was very good and I'm not sure I could have eaten it without a ton of jus. I would have liked some/more horseradish crema also. It was the right bun, but sadly I hate to say it, I think Joeys has a better product - again for me. Only ate half and provided some constructive criticism for our server who was completely uninterested.

Yelp
The food was good and the service was also good and attentive, we had to try the cheese bread as so many people raved about it and it was really good so was the Brussel sprouts and cream corn, the ceasar salad was good and it was made table side so that was entertaining, we ordered what the menu called "seared jumbo scallops" which was $31.95 but we received 4 very small scallops so that was disappointing, 2 of the steaks were cooked right but the 3rd one was more like the 2 other ones and not as ordered but why can't cooks cook steaks!? I would give it a 7 on 10.

Yelp
Had an amazing dinner at Hy's. Started with the cheese toast, beef tenderloin carpaccio, and crab cake. We had the filet, with creamed spinach and cauliflower gratin. Capped off the dinner with key lime pie. Thanks Hy's.

Yelp
I took my Husband to Hy's for his birthday on the evening of October 16th. We've been talking about going for awhile but never made it out till now. We arrived 15 mins earlier than our 7:30pm reservation as there was no traffic at all that night, they were able to seat us right away at the Downtown Vancouver location. We ordered the following: Cheese Toast for two Spinach Salad Steak Neptune came with mash potatoes and green beans ( Medium Rare) Filet À La Hy's, came with roasted potatoes and green beans.(Medium Rare) Sautéed Cremini Mushrooms Banana Foster ( Table Side) I must say, the Cheese toast wasn't as great as the reviews all said, and this is coming from me, my two favourite things are cheese and bread. My husband thought the spinach salad was side but we were wrong, it was a full size and my goodness so amazing! Both steaks were cooked to perfection and very delicious. We realized very quickly that we ordered waaaay too much food as the portions are pretty good! Overall it was a great birthday dinner, friendly staff and followed all Covid-19 rules, felt super safe! We'll definitely be going back on special occasions!
