This place did its level best for us. I made a request on my open table reservation for a nice private booth to celebrate our night, and they gave us just that. Even though, we were half-an-hour or more late (unusual for me, but it was a special occasion).
The server welcomed us, gave us a little history on the place. One of Vancouver's oldest apparently. Of course it is a chain. Also, turns out that all of the top steak houses in Vancouver are owned by siblings of the same family. Nice bit of background info. Then we proceeded to have some polite banter, and then he gave us the room we needed to enjoy our night. Didn't get in the way at all, but we were also never left feeling unattended to. Our server was a Ninja! I don't know how he did it. Do they have hidden cameras? I don't know, but it was excellent. I just want to say, the service was great, it didn't go unnoticed! And I want to thank you for it (yes, my feelings were reflected in the tip. I left a BIG ONE! More than I could afford, to be honest, but he deserved it).
Porterhouse steak was perfect for the two of us to share, with a side of lobster. We like a bit of surf with our turf. The famous cheese toast was a great start, which is a pretty standard thing to get at Hy's. My grand-mother's cheese on toast is a tad better, she was famous for it around our household, but that's just my bias. I won't let you have her recipe.
