"The first thing you have to do at Freddie & Pepper’s is get in a squabble with the person behind the counter. Just take a little too long ordering. It shouldn’t be hard. Next, find a table that isn’t being used for the folding of takeout boxes, crack open a Diet Coke, and get ready for a plain cheese slice that fills every crevice of your mouth with oozing mozzarella. If it's true excess you’re after, go for the bacon chicken ranch slice with rivers of dressing under melted orange cheddar. There are also some sandwich options, including a few Chilean ones like a chacarero with beef so tender it tastes like meatloaf. But don’t get fancy at this classic UWS slice shop. Stick to the pizza. photo credit: Bryan Kim Food Rundown photo credit: Bryan Kim Regular Cheese Pizza The regular slice has a crunchy, slightly chewy crust weighed down by what seems like a full pound of mozzarella. Elsewhere, it would feel like too much. At Freddie & Pepper's, it's just right. photo credit: Bryan Kim Bacon Chicken Ranch Pizza Our favorite thing about this Upper West Side staple isn't the random headshot of Dustin Hoffman on the wall. It's the slice overburdened with chicken, ranch, crumbles of bacon, and, inexplicably, a whole can of diced tomatoes." - Bryan Kim
