"Nopa, the American restaurant that’s a beloved San Francisco staple, is a name that carries a lot of weight. So when Nopa Fish arrived in the Ferry Building, expectations were certainly high. Unfortunately, it doesn’t measure up just yet. The fried fish dishes need the most work. The fish and chips arrive oily and tough, and the just-fine rockfish sandwich could use more oomph than the accompanying slaw provides. But the menu isn’t all bad. The smoked trout and corn chowder has sweet bursts of corn and flaky morsels of fish in each bite, and the bay shrimp and egg salad sandwich delivers flawless deviled eggs on a bouncy piece of milk bread. Nopa Fish is definitely one of the strongest contenders in the Ferry Building for a quick lunch or early dinner, but right now, we wouldn’t make special plans to visit. Food Rundown Seaweed Chips These are too oily, eclipsing the flavor of the seaweed. Skip them. photo credit: Patrick Wong Shrimp And Rice Fritters They’re crispy, but dry. It’s also tough to find the shrimp. You can do without them. photo credit: Patrick Wong Fish & Chips We appreciate the generous portion, but the coating is slightly greasy and the over-fried fish has too much chew. The fries have the opposite issue and aren’t crispy enough. photo credit: Patrick Wong Pristine Fish Over Sushi Rice This dish highlights the quality of the fish here, which you can buy fresh on your way out. It’s a great dish, but in a city where there are plenty of great chirashi bowls, it doesn’t stand out. photo credit: Patrick Wong Fried Rockfish Sandwich The fish is fried well, but with a bland slaw, the sandwich gets boring after a few bites. photo credit: Patrick Wong Bay Shrimp And Egg Salad Sandwich A highlight of the menu. More of a toast, the airy milk bread is sturdy enough to support the huge mound of creamy shrimp and egg salad. This would be one of our top priorities on any visit. photo credit: Patrick Wong Smoked Trout And Corn Chowder The best dish at Nopa Fish. It’s rich without being too heavy, and filling enough to qualify as a full meal, not just a side. photo credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong
