San Francisco’s New Restaurant Openings - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The team behind Nopa has opened Nopa Fish, a seafood counter in the Ferry Building. The sit-down menu includes dishes like tuna melts, a chirashi bowl, and fish and chips—or you can snag prepared foods or a fresh catch to take home." - julia chen 1, patrick wong

Nopa Fish - Review - Embarcadero - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Nopa, the American restaurant that’s a beloved San Francisco staple, is a name that carries a lot of weight. So when Nopa Fish arrived in the Ferry Building, expectations were certainly high. Unfortunately, it doesn’t measure up just yet. The fried fish dishes need the most work. The fish and chips arrive oily and tough, and the just-fine rockfish sandwich could use more oomph than the accompanying slaw provides. But the menu isn’t all bad. The smoked trout and corn chowder has sweet bursts of corn and flaky morsels of fish in each bite, and the bay shrimp and egg salad sandwich delivers flawless deviled eggs on a bouncy piece of milk bread. Nopa Fish is definitely one of the strongest contenders in the Ferry Building for a quick lunch or early dinner, but right now, we wouldn’t make special plans to visit. Food Rundown Seaweed Chips These are too oily, eclipsing the flavor of the seaweed. Skip them. photo credit: Patrick Wong Shrimp And Rice Fritters They’re crispy, but dry. It’s also tough to find the shrimp. You can do without them. photo credit: Patrick Wong Fish & Chips We appreciate the generous portion, but the coating is slightly greasy and the over-fried fish has too much chew. The fries have the opposite issue and aren’t crispy enough. photo credit: Patrick Wong Pristine Fish Over Sushi Rice This dish highlights the quality of the fish here, which you can buy fresh on your way out. It’s a great dish, but in a city where there are plenty of great chirashi bowls, it doesn’t stand out. photo credit: Patrick Wong Fried Rockfish Sandwich The fish is fried well, but with a bland slaw, the sandwich gets boring after a few bites. photo credit: Patrick Wong Bay Shrimp And Egg Salad Sandwich A highlight of the menu. More of a toast, the airy milk bread is sturdy enough to support the huge mound of creamy shrimp and egg salad. This would be one of our top priorities on any visit. photo credit: Patrick Wong Smoked Trout And Corn Chowder The best dish at Nopa Fish. It’s rich without being too heavy, and filling enough to qualify as a full meal, not just a side. photo credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong

Nopa Fish: Famous Restaurant Just Opened a Market in the Ferry Building | Eater SF

"A fish-market kiosk launched by the team behind a ritzy Divisadero Street restaurant opened in the Ferry Building on June 10, focusing almost exclusively on California-sourced seafood. It operates as both a takeaway oyster-and-fish counter and a small on-site dining menu; owner Laurence Jossel plates dishes such as shrimp arancini, fried rockfish sandwiches, shrimp-and-egg salad sandwiches on Acme Bread, and has brought the restaurant’s fries and latkes to the waterfront." - Paolo Bicchieri

Absolutely loved my experience at Nopa Fish! From start to finish, everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The summer salad was the perfect start—vibrant, crisp, and bursting with seasonal flavors that felt like a plate of sunshine. The fish and chips were outstanding: perfectly golden, light, and flaky with a crunch that made every bite satisfying. And the star of the meal, the rockfish sandwich, was simply incredible—delicate yet packed with flavor, balanced by fresh toppings and a soft, warm bun. The ambiance was relaxed yet elevated, and the service was warm and attentive without being overbearing. Nopa Fish truly captures the essence of coastal dining with a modern touch. Highly recommend for anyone craving fresh, thoughtfully crafted seafood in the city!

Google
I appreciate a smaller menu because it means they focus on making those items better. Also, the prices are more economical compared to the other restaurants in the building serving fish. We ordered the tuna melt and the fish sandwich. The tuna melt has loads of flavor and comes with a dipping sauce that enhances the meal. The fish sandwich paled in flavor to the melt but was enjoyable. We added the sauce to the fish sandwich and it got a boost of flavor. I had the non-alcoholic West Coast IPA and paired great with both sandwiches. Will definitely be back.

Stopped by for a light bite and tried the chowder. It was delicious! Great flavors and very filling (but not overly heavy). I would definitely come back to try the other menu items. Also, service was very good and friendly.

Google
The seating area is small, but this new restaurant has great food. Particularly their fried rockfish is amazing, in the fish and chips dish and the sandwich. The fries in the former could be improved, as they were sort of dry. They do give a lot of fries. Additionally, the shrimp arancini (they’re fried rice bites) were good. We also ordered a cup of corn and trout chowder, which was a burst of flavor. The soup cup was large. Loved the pesto they included with the rice bites and the chowder. Props for their packaging as well, it was all compostable and had nice presentation😊!

Happened to come here on what looked like their first day. Very friendly staff and the fish looked SUPER fresh. One of the fish was still moving while it was on the ice. I got the bay shrimp egg salad sandwich and the white shrimp arancini. Tasted so good. Curious about the fish and chips next time I home here.

Google
I was browsing lunch options in the Ferry Building and was pleasantly surprised to find vegetarian options on the menu at Nopa Fish! I had the crispy tofu sandwich, which was delicious and messy. The staff were very friendly and everyone at the communal tables seemed to be having a great time.

Google
Simple traditional seafood dishes with a few surprises thrown in from the smoked trout and corn chowder to their take on a chirashi "ish" called the pristine fish bowl. The fish and chips was served with some sort of aioli romesco "ish" sauce. I'm totally down with the twists, turns, bringing the "ish" to the fish. Love it. Next time I'm having the arancini "ish" rice and shrimp fritters. Or maybe the smoked albacore melt. Or maybe the bay shrimp and egg salad sandwich. Too much yummy food. Not enough meals in the day.

Google
Had the melt and it was phenomenal. Kind of pricey, but it is definitely an elevated dish and ultimately worth it.

Yelp
This place is the definition of "hit the spot!" And it sure did indeed! I still think about that crunch. So damn good! My favorite part was that the French fries were delicious too. Usually they're soggy from the hot fish, but they really made it work. The service was friendly. We order at the front. Wait for a table. They bring out the food. Ambiance is cute. Located inside the ferry building (avoid that cold wind). Limited seating, but we only waited for like 10 minutes for a group to get up. Actually like food was ready before a table freed up, but it still worked out fine. Overall, great spot! Super cute--and I especially love how they have the fresh fish on display on the front.

Yelp
I don't usually do updates this close to a review but it is appropriate here. After a trusted farm vendor at the Tuesday Ferry farmer's market raved about his lunch recently, I made a point to bookmark it in my mind. My original review was for a take and go meal shortly after they opened. Being the dish he tried was best eaten fresh and hot, I made a point on a late Tuesday morning to stop here to dine. There were a couple of people ahead of me in line and four or five diners already seated at the communal tables. I placed my order, a meal and a drink, and found a stool a few feet away from the counter at the nearest communal table. I started with the strawberry limeade (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=gDOaBPxVXKL907hfh4Bf_Q); served with ice and a slice of lime, this was an appropriate summer drink, just sweet enough for me. About 7-8 minutes later, the chef owner brought me my basket of fish & chips (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=Wew1qHJdhKt51q_eBGoO4Q) which came with a tartar like dipping sauce. It was out-of-the-fryer yet slightly cooled hot, not enough to burn me. I liked the freshness of the fish, the obvious star here, and the batter being tasty but not salty. The fries were hidden underneath (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=pB9p_U5v5uoj440lO6rR0w) and, after having my fill for lunch, I brought the rest home. The plentiful portion of fries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=ZJ5i9S2HZGf-aaVrakQz1Q) became part of my dinner. Only when I started on this again for dinner, I found and munched on the delicious pickled vegetables (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=aj-OLFv25CUlOO_D5bjXGQ); they were addictively good, a mix of cucumber pickle slices, yellow beans, pepperocini, and cauliflower. That almost qualifies as a salad! The generous chef owner also gave me the opportunity to try his summer salad (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=eOuCynoTUKO3LiX-0i255g), a welcome surprise bonus; described as organic Little Gems, stone fruit, sheep's milk feta, almonds, and honey balsamic vinaigrette (there were blackberries too). I ate a little less than half as part of dinner that night too and was amazed. The brightness of every ingredient were outstanding with the variety making this a joyful cknnnf experience, mixture of flavors and textures. I finished the rest thx following my night as part of dinner, pairing it with some soup I had at home. Thank you for your generosity, Larry, and giving me three enjoyable weekday meals. Thanks also to Rachel for taking my order and thoughtfully offering me a bag to bring my unfinished food home. Just need to try your flagship location besides exploring more of your menu here. *** Get that summer salad as I'm sure this is a seasonal item if it's available.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Nopa and of seafood, so what's not to like?! Oh a recent visit I tried the shrimp arancini and smoked trout latkes. Arancini were a good size and, taste and texture wise, some of the best I've had. Definite repeat item. Latkes were also good - the quality and flavor of the trout were excellent but the pickled beet hummus it comes with didn't really work that well for me. I'll caveat that by saying I'm generally not a huge beet fan so perhaps I could request it without that in future. Service was fast and super friendly and I'm definitely excited to come back and try other items on the menu. The retail fresh fish and seafood selection also looks to be very high quality and something I'd like to experience.

Yelp
A welcome new addition to the Ferry Building. It's both a fish vendor and a prepared food vendor, though many people seem to buying the food. A really nice menu with a diverse offering. Bay Shrimp and Egg Salad Sandwich: Egg salad on milk bread is always a nice comfort food. Add little shrimp and it's even fancier. This was really just the shrimp and egg salad on to of the bread though, so it's really a sandwich. But fun to cut off a piece and it like a finger food. So creamy and yummy. Rainbow Trout, Corn and Shellfish Chowder: A lot bougier than typical clam chowder. The fresh corn adds a nice texture. The rainbow trout added a nice smoky flavor. So quite a complex chowder. Fish & Chips: The batter felt different than regular fish & chips. Thinner, almost like tempura. It was fine for that pub comfort food view. But the other dishes I tried were so much more complex and sophisticated. Smoked Albacore Melt w/ Gruyere: I'm normally not a canned tuna fish guy, since its usually cheap and reminds me of cat food. But figured I'd give them a try, since everything here seems artisanal. The tuna definitely tasted better than regular canned stuff, maybe because of the smoked aspect. It was super rich given the mayo, cheese and whatever they slathered on the sides before griddling. Perhaps the heaviest thing I had here, even more so than the fish & chips. Seaweed Potato Chips: Pretty big portion. Seemed like in-house made chips. Bigger and thicker than store bought chips, but still very crunchy. Only a little bit of seaweed sprinkled on top, so it wasn't overwhelming. Pristine Fish over Sushi Rice: Felt like their own take on a Chirashi or Poke Bowl. Loved all the delicate raw pieces of fish. Definitely tasted sushi grade. All the different veggies, many pickled, added a nicely diversity of taste between fish bites. Rainbow Trout Latkes: I really like latkes, but I'm just so-so about lox. I think I liked the rainbow trout more than lox since it didn't taste as salted / preserved, yet still have a really good smoky taste. And thicker / meatier. Then latkes themselves were nice a crunchy. The beet hummus was kind of weird choice, but tasted nice. Rice and Shrimp Fritters: Essentially arancini. Crispy on the outside, firm rice inside and nice big shrimp bits. Though that pesto sauce really amped things up.

Yelp
Craving chowder or fish & chips at the Ferry Building without the long wait? Nopa Fish. They don't have the variety of Hog Island's menu but when you're pressed for time and don't want to wait for a table, it's a solid plan b. OFC, can't expect anything less than solid from Nopa, a staple resto in the city for nearly two decades. Only came to the Ferry Building for Mishka's (dog treats) but the allure of fish & chips on someone's table was too much to resist. * Fish & Chips ($25): https://tinyurl.com/ycxfj8w8 The wild local rockfish was lightly battered, crispy, moist, and flaky. The accompanying fries were hot and crunchy. The harissa aioli was bland so the pickled veggies came in clutch, providing in-between bites of acid. Take your food to go, head outside the ferry building, and enjoy it al fresco with waterfront views! O T H E R I N F O * Nopa Fish opened 6/17/25. * Small menu with less than a dozen items: chowder, salads, sandwiches, fish & chips, and chirashi (no oysters). Wine available. 4% SF mandate. * Seafood counter: Fish, scallops, shrimp, oysters, clams, etc. * Fast-casual service. Food was ready in ready in less than 5 minutes. * Two communal tables with stools. Parts of the tables extend out to the walking path of the bustling marketplace. IMO, too loud to enjoy a meal inside.

Yelp
Trying this new spot. We got the fish and chips. Three pieces of fish and crispy fries for $25. Very fresh. The plate of the day with petrole sole and cucumber salad also very good. $25. $60 total with tax and tip. Will be back.

Yelp
There are quite a few seafood restaurants inside the San Francisco Ferry Building, and I randomly chose this one to try. I picked a seafood and rice combination that was wrapped together and deep-fried, and it tasted pretty good. I also ordered their fish and chips, with fries seasoned with cumin that had a very unique flavor. The fried fish was large and delicious, overall quite satisfying. The prices were reasonable, and the service was good. The tables and chairs were also very clean. Although I did not buy any, this place also sells fresh seafood. I wonder if their scallops are tasty.

Yelp
It's good, but way too pricey. I got the Fish & Chips for lunch during my work break, and it came in a small basket. Two pieces of rockfish, fries with aioli dipping sauce, and some random pickled veges. There were tables in front of the store, and someone came around to clean up empty plates. The total after tax was almost $29! After tip, I paid more than $30 for a simple weekday lunch. If I were to ever come back again, I'd skip the Fish & Chips for a much more affordable item.

Yelp
A spendy lunch, but really delicious. I had the fried rockfish sandwich which was enormous! My friends had the egg and shrimp sandwich and the smoked trout latkes and they both were very pleased. Service was much nicer than you'd expect for a counter spot, and our food came out really fast. Get there before noon if you want a seat.

Yelp
Warm, attentive and friendly Nopa team at the Ferry Building. Everyone kept an eye out on customers, cleanliness and the timing of when food/beverages were served. Casual atmosphere. Ease in ordering. Very, very clean. Could be the best broth based seafood chowder in SF. Perfect on cool chilly days. Can't wait to go back. Thank you, we are thrilled you are downtown

Yelp
Exceeded my expectations! Very fresh fish, expertly prepared food, good service & reasonable prices for the quality. We had the Fried Rockfish Sandwich, which had a nice & succulent fish with ginger & lime slaw on a milk bread bun. The Fish & Chips consisted of 4 perfectly fried local rockfish served with Harissa aioli, pickled vegetables and cumin spiced fries. The Rainbow Trout Latkes came with two generous slabs of smoked, moist pink rainbow trout, pickled beet hummus & horseradish crème fraiche over a could have thick rounds of potato latkes. We also had the Pristine Fish over Sushi Rice, which was top grade sushi fish slices of a variety, served with Luna Koshihikari Organic sushi rice, baby greens, pickled ginger, avocado & a nice poached egg. Everything was delicious. We were so full and kept eating. This place also sells fresh raw fish which you can either take home to cook or get some sushi grade fish selections. Efficient & helpful service- order at the counter, have a seat at one of the two long tables to share with other diners. Water & drinks including a few nice wine choices are available. I will be back for more meals & fish here!

Yelp
Holy smoke (fish)! Do not sleep on this place, it's by far the best spot in the ferry building. The fish is so delicious and fresh, everything we had was incredible. The smoked trout latkes were a particularly good treat, and if you like tuna melts, their take on it is one of a kind (really more of a Rueben). My only wish is that the open one in Oakland, but definitely be back here. So good!

Yelp
Tasty, fresh, and lovely! Found this fish-focused restaurant in the Ferry Building. Nice display of the fish. Good options for all including smaller items/soup/apps and good-sized meals.had the chowder. Some chowders are too gummy and others are light on ingredients. This fish, corn & potato chowder was a perfect balance of ingredients and soup base. Also shared the fish and sushi rice entree. Presented in a single bowl with rice, 3 types of fish that day, an egg, and veggies/pickled things. Very tasty. Service was casual and attentive. You order at the counter and share common tables. Will return.

Yelp
Super fresh seafood! Finally, after several years without a good fish monger in the Ferry Building, Nopa Fish delivers! I got some local petrale sole to cook for dinner. They packed it so nicely, with a separate ice bag. And it was amazing! Can't wait to try getting lunch here! Fish and chips!!

Mike M.

Yelp
Another great place in the Ferry Building!!! Ate here for lunch, loved it! I had the rockfish sandwich and my wife had the albacore melt, both sandwiches had bread from Acme Bakery. Nopa was hopping but line moved fast and food arrived just as fast. Service was kind. We ate at Nopa inside the Ferry Building.

Yelp
Beautiful day in the city highlighted by amazing food at this tasty new seafood shack in the Ferry Building. Fried rockfish sandwich was the perfect mashup of crunchy + tender fried fish and banh-mi pickled veggie goodness. Fresh fried potato chips sprinkled w seaweed seasoning completed the meal. Will be going back for the signature fish and chips. See you soon!

Yelp
I was excited to find a new fish place to try for lunch. I ordered the Fish and Chips to go and a can of sparkling water with tip it was over $35 for a mediocre lunch. If it had been good, the $ would have been steep but okay. They need some regular condiments available like ketchup, vinegar, salt and pepper. It came with a tasteless pink sauce. The fish was fishy, not in a good way, and the fries needed ketchup or salt. There were pickled peppers on the side that didn't entice me to try them. I don't think I'll go back.

Patrick Y.

Yelp
Super busy on a Saturday morning. The staff is nice and the food is ready quickly and tastes very good.

Yelp
I have been waiting for this moment to come and finally I made it. With out thinking twice we decided to order Fish and Chips to begin with and also the delicious looking salmon chowder to go . The weather was so nice that we decided to enjoy the bay view and sitting outside , with out waiting to much we seat on one of the benches in the back of the Ferry Building and start the tasty looking food . We could not stop eating from the first bite to the end and definitely it was the only way to describe the experience Delicious. The team working at the place was very friendly and helpful . By the way they have a tasty wine that compliments their taste food , I will recommend NOPA FISH TO THE WORLD. ( I am not a blogger I just love good food and good people )

Yelp
fish and chips were good, fish breading was crispy and fish wasn't fishy, freshly made, fries were ok seasoning and crisp weren't there, but pickles and aolie were nice addition but would prefer tartar sauce.

Yelp
Fish and chips was delicious. Crispy and lightly battered with ample fish. Tasted very fresh. Aioli was a great complement. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Stopped by today for lunch and enjoyed an incredible fried fish sandwich and tasty summer salad. The decor is gorgeous, the line moved quickly and the food came out right away. There was a bunch of staff and everyone was lovely. The fish was perfectly cooked and succulent. The cheese and fruit and almonds in the salad were delicious.

S K.

Yelp
I had the Tuna Melt with Gruyere Cheese and the Smoked Trout and Corn Chowder. Both were outstanding. Tuna Melt was like a Ruben: albacore tuna mixed with sauerkraut and served with Russian dressing. Best tuna melt I've ever eaten. The chowder was perfectly balanced between trout, potatoes and corn. Service was prompt. Ambience typical of a sitdown restaurant where diners are enjoying their food. S.K. 06/23/2025

Yelp
The Fried Rockfish Sandwich was delicious. The fish was fresh, the combination of ingredients provided good flavor and the Acme milk bread bun was great. The Pristine Raw Fish over Sushi Rice was good and the fish was clearly fresh, but comparing it to sushi it missed the great flavor that really good sushi fish has. Had hoped it would be as satisfying as great sushi. Still an enjoyable dish and the other ingredients were great, but maybe won't order it again. Won't stop us from coming back! Service was very friendly. Lovely area to sit or you can take it outside to a table or bench behind the Ferry Building.
