"If you want a cubano, Havana Sandwich Shop should be your starting point. The dining area’s yellow walls are plastered with family photos and articles that archive their nearly-50 years in business. While much has changed since the ’70s (location jumping and pandemic menu pivots) the Cuban restaurant's reliability hasn’t. The cubano, stuffed with salty ham and tangy pickles, still tastes like it came from the hands of the family’s patriarch. At lunchtime, the place is crawling with regulars devouring world-class empanadas (chicken with cheese and jalapeño is our fave), and comforting ropa vieja and picadillo." - nina reeder, jacinta howard, juli horsford
