"When I arrive in Bali I brace for mayhem at the Denpasar airport, which I’ve found to be an epicenter of tourist scams: SIM cards sold there are often marked up about ten times and taxi prices are routinely inflated. To avoid this I get the names of reputable companies before I go, never get into unmarked taxis, and always know what the ride should cost; I also research the airport by Googling its name plus “scam” so I know what to expect. Sometimes you can book an Uber for much cheaper if you meet the car at the departures level and ignore people who claim Uber “isn’t allowed” there. I also don’t rely on airport Wi‑Fi, so I decide on my taxi or SIM card plan before landing — that preparation lets me walk through the chaos with my head held high." - Matthew Kepnes
